The driving plate 19 is held against longitudinal movement with respect to the core leaves by means of a series of pins 23 which are adapted to extend into recesses 24 formed in a downwardlyextending flange 25 on the driving head, the pins being sufiiciently short so as to permit radial movement of the core leaves as the same are collapsed. In order to draw the driving plate and the core leaves upwardly when the center bar has been raised somewhat and the leaves have been collapsed to such an extent that they are free from frictional engagement with the pile shell, the internal flange 25 on the driving plate is provided with a downward extension as at 26, terminating at a point slightly removed from theupper surface of the upper wedge meme ber 15, there being thus provided a construction which combines simplicity with sturdiness, and which effectively assures the withdraw-a1 ofthecore leaves without danger of in' ry to the leaves or to the toggle'links.

In order positively to separate the center-bar and the core leaves to break the clamping action of the wedging surfaces, after the driving operation is complete, the driving-cap carries a transverse shaft 28, on theends of which there are rotatably mounted the arms 29 of a U-shaped member 30, the free endsof the arms 29 being formed Withcamsurfaces 31 adapted to bear against the vupper surface of the driving-plate when the how 32 of the U-shaped member is moved upwardly. Thereis thus provided a simple construction which is composed of a relatively small numberof sturdy parts, and which can be operated with a maximum of ease and with aminimum of danger of injury to the core leaves. and to :the other parts the repair or replacement of which is attended with con-, siderable difliculty.
Since certain changes may be made in the above constructionv and different embodiments of the invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above. description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Itis-also to be understood that the following claims are intended to cover all ofthe generic and specific features of the invention claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. Pile-driving apparatus, comprising a center bar, core leaves collapsibly associated with said center bar, a driving cap attached to said centerbar, and a driving plate interposed between said driving cap and said core leaves, said driving plate and said core leaves being movable as a unit longitudinally of said center bar.
2. Pile-driving apparatus, comprising a center bar, core leaves collapsibly associated with said center bar, a driving cap attached to said center bar, and a driving plate interposed between said driving cap and said core leaves and mounted for longitudinal movement with respect to said center bar.
3. Pile-driving apparatus, comprising a center bar, core leaves collapsibly associated with said center bar, a driving cap attached to said center bar, a drivingplate interosed between said driving cap and said core eaves and means to prevent relative longitudinal movement of said driving plate and said core leaves, said center bar being adapted to spread saidcore leaves when the center bar is moved-downwardly with respect thereto, and said driving plate being formed with means to limit thespreading movement of said core leaves, 7

Pile-driving apparatus comprising a driving cap, a center bar carried thereby, exansible and collapsible coreleaves surroundmg said center bar, a driving plate disposed between said driving cap and the upper ends of'said core leaves, said driving plate and said core leaves being movable as a unit relative to-said" center bar, and a downwardlyextending flange on'* said driving plate surrounding theupper ends of said core'leaves for limiting the expansion thereof. 19(Pile-drivihg apparatus comprising a center bar, aplurality. of core leaves surrounding said center bar, pivoted link connections between said core leaves and said center bar, cooperating \vedging members carried by said center bar and said core leaves, a driving plate disposed above said 20. In an apparatus of the character described, a central unit comprising a longitudinally-extended bar having longitudinally-spaced wedging members thereon and an outer unit comprisin a driving plate and a plurality of expansi le and collapsible core leaves suspended therefrom, means for preventing longitudinal movement between said plate and saidleaves while permitting radial movement of said leaves, each of said core leaves being provided with lon 'tudinallyspaced wedging members adapte to cooperate with the aforesaid wedging members, said units having a limited longitudinal movement with respect to each other.

Pile-driving apparatus comprising a center bar, a plurality of core leaves surrounding said center bar, pivoted link connections between said core leaves and said center bar, cooperating wedging members carried by said center bar and said core leaves, a driving plate disposed above said core leaves and movable longitudinally therewith with respect to said center bar, means for preventing longitudinal movement between said driving plate and said core leaves while permitting radial movement of the core leaves, and cooperating means on said center bar and said driving plate for lifting said driving plate and said core leaves upwardly to the end of the collapsing movement of the core leaves whereby lifting strain on said links is avoided;
