The door is provided near its upper end with a lifting lug or finger-hold 27 whereby it may be ralsed to its initial position.
U on reference to the drawings, more particu arly Fig. 4, it will be noted that the weight of; the door 25' is carried by the teeth 9 of the wheel10and consequently there is a constant tendency of the doorto descend by the force of gravity. This tendency, however, is resisted by the pawl 20 which engages the stop shoulders 19 on the disk 16 inasmuch as said disk is secured to the shaft 12 to which the wheel 10 is also'secured. When I a coin, indicated at 27 is inserted, it passes at once to the periphery of the disk 16 and partly enters the uppermost pocket 18, as shown in Fig. 1, coming to rest upontheedge of the ocket and against the end of the pawl 20. If the door 5 be now given a slight up,-
' ward movement, the wheel 10 andconsequently the disk 16 will be rotated just enough to permitthe coin to drop fully into the pocket, as shown in Fig. 5, and this movementof the coin will carry it partly under the end of the pawl so that if the finger-hold upon the door 5'be released the weight of the door will carry it downwardly and the wheel 10 will be rotated, the rotation being transmitted through the shaft 12 to the disk 16 and the coin being carried under and past the pawl to permit the free end of the pawl to again drop onto the periphery of the disk, as shown in Fig. 6. r The rotation of the wheel 10 and e the disk 16 will continue until a succeeding stop shoulder 19 on the disk is brought against the end of the pawl, whereupon the arts will be held at rest in the position shown 1n Fig. 1. The distances between successive shoulders 19 on the disk 16 will correspond to the heights of the compartments in the column so thateach operation ofthe disk and wheel will permit door 5 to descend and fully uncover the end of one compartment and only one compartment. Any attempt to juggle the movements of the door by manipulation of the same to impart retrograde movement thereto and thereby possibly free the door for uncovering two compartments will be frustrated by the engagement of the dog 23 with the notches 8 ofthe door, the point 24 of the dog passing through an opening 28 in theflange 6 to engage the notches 8 of the closure, as shown clearly in Fig. 4. When all of the compartments have been exposed and restocking of the same is desired, the fresh merchandise may be inserted in the compartments through the exposed free ends of the same but to permit the closure to be returned to its 7 Then by gripping the flange or finger-hold 27,

Having thus described the invention, I claim a I 1. In a vending machine including a column of compartments and a vertically movable closurecommon to all the compartments, an escapement wheel engaged, with the closure and adapted to be rotated byv the weight of the closure, a pocket disk connected with said escapement wheel to rotate therewith and arranged to receive a deposited coin when partly rotated by a slight lifting of the closure, and means engaged with the disk to prevent rotation of the same and the escapement wheel, the last-mentioned means being arranged to be engaged and released by a coin received and held in a pocket of the, disk.
