SELF ALIGNING STOOL BASE Filed June 21, 1929 ATTOBNE y.

anuntidy' appearance; f It is an object ofiny invention to j p'rovide a swivel stool which is normally maintained facing -a counter so thatqa 'row'of such stools 3 we all faced in the same direction to present PETER mnsnn, on rlos ANGEL-ES, CALIFORNIA if e em m s'rooL BASE 1 I mus d filed QT t ne 21, 1929.] Serial No. 372.634.
I My invention re'latesfto furniture, and in particular to astool which fi'nds specia utili'ty asa lunch-counter stool. Q f"; 1 "In stores, restaurants, and the like, it :is
common to have a counter in front of which are disposed a plurality of swivel stools 'on i which customers may'sitwhile making pur- -"chase.xW1-1e1i the customers leave, it usually happens that the stools are leftfturn'ed at ananglefto the counter thereby presenting a neat-appearance; 3
nrurther object of my invention is to provide sewer of the"character"mentioned in;
which thepositioning means is'in the form of cam arrangement which-is enclosed thebase of the st'oolfj V r 1 It is another object of my invention toofpro- Y vide a swivelstool which is strongly con- -structed- I secure this .object 'b'y providing a stool in which a post thereof extends' downward into a chamber in a supporting pedestal and isj'ournaled i'n'the'fpedestaliat' its lower end.----
It is also an object of iny invention to provide" a swivel'stoolwhich is provided with a hanger for hats, caps, orother apparel,
and which cooperates with other parts of the stool in a novel manner.
Further objects of my invention-are found 1 in the particular form of construction used in the preferred form of my device as will appear in the ensuing description.
In the accompanying drawings, I show a preferred form of my invention.
Fig. l is a side elevation, partly in section, showing a stool of my invention in the normal position. j
Fig. 2'is a side elevation taken in the- Referring to the drawings, my' invention =eonsist'sof a pedestal 10 havinga base 11 ;ad'apte( l' to be supported on-a floor, and a tcylindrical portion 12 which is supported in an upright position by the base 11. The cylindrical portion 12 provides an interior ,Cliamber 13 whiclrextends downward from the" upper ,end thereof. Intermediate be:- tween the base 11 and theupper end of the pedestal 10 isan annular ring l l projecting I into the chamber'l which is machinedor otherwise formed-to support abearing 15.
The upperend of the cylindrical portion12 isdikeWis'e machined 'toprovide an upper bearing surface 17 and an inside bearing sur face 18. "Journaled b'y'the bearin'g 'surface 18 and supportedon thebearing surface 17 is a ,cylmdrical portio'n19 of a seat member 20,the seat member 20 supporting a conventional horizontal seat" 21 and a conventional upright back 22 secured atthe back ofthe seat 21; Asbest shown in Figscl and 3, the.
seat-' member 20 isretained in the pedestal 10bya ball'24 which is held in the upward end of the pedestal 10 by a plug 25 and which extends into an annular groovein the cylin- "drical portion 190i the seat member20. This permitsrotation of the seat member 20 but prevents i vertical movement thereof. Secured to the seat member 20 and extending downward therefrom is a post 27 the lower end of whichis journaled by the bearing 15. The'post 27 is received'into a central longi tudinal opening 28 in afollowe'r or cammember 29 so as to permit the follower 29 toslide "on the post 27. h
The follower 29 is'provided with an upper cam surface 30 which has the same contour V as aflower camsurface 31 formedon a lower face oftjhe cylindrical'portlon 19. One end" "of a spring33engages-the bearing '15 and the other end thereof engagesthe follower 29'so I as to normally urge the cam 30 on the'follow- 'er 29 into contact jwiththe cam 31 on the seat member 20. As clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 4;, a'hanger 34' is secured'by a screw 35 to the Y pedestallO near the upper end thereof and extends outward therefronr I A pin 36 onthe fha-nger extends through anopening formed through the wall of the pedestal 10 and extends into :1 vertical longitudinal slot 37 formed in the follower so as to prevent rotation of the follower 29 but permit vertical n'iovement thereof.
As the seat 21 is rotated to a position as shown in Fig. 2, the cam surfaces 30 and 31 provide sliding contact therebctween and the cam fo1loyrer29 moved downward ggainstthe action of the spring This is clearly shown in Fig. 2 in which the cam follower 29 is shown as moved downward and compressing the spring lVhen the seat is unoccupied, the cams 30 and 31 being normally forced into contact by expqnsion of the spring 33, slide relatively to eachother and rotate the stool to a normed position, as shown 1. l estool is thus returned to a in Fig. I norma position by the action of the spring 33 c on the cams 30, and 31 whenever it is unoc eu edv a a It will he noted that i v stool is constructed very strongly by provr ing an upper beari 18 and a lower bearing 15, for the post 27. 'l ii e anticularconstruction used in supportingt eseat member 20 also provides an, eco- 2 wand nom gz l method. of constructing the stool as it is only neccss rv to mirchine the surfaces 17 end 18,:1nd thesu rface. ofthe ring 14. The
construction of ny hanger 35 also performs t f' kls ty o a hange and o mea for. preventing rotation of fol-lower 29.
