SPEED CONTROL FOR INTERNAL- MOTORS Filed June 5, 1951 m Patented Mar. 1, 1932 ARCHIE B. CONRAD, F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANQ SPEED CONTEOL FOR INTERNAL MOTORS Application filed June 5, 1931. Serial No. 542,483.
The present invention relates to an improved speed control for internal motors, in other words a governor to be'positioned between the carburetor and the intake manifold.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a device of this kind, so that when it is set to permit of a speed of thirty miles or twentyfive miles or forty miles an hour, the motor 0 vehicle will be prevented from traveling at a greater speed. This device is particularly ada ted for trucks and similar vehicles.
owever it may also be used on taxi cabs and the like, thereby preventing the driver from speeding.
Another purpose is to provide a'device of this kind comprisin an insert casing between the intake manifold and the carburetor including a butterfly valve in the passage re- 3 sponsive to the suction impulses of the engine, including a weight or gravity member on one end of the shaft of the butterfly valve acting to retard the action of the valve, the weight or gravity member including cush1on 5 ing means, for cooperation with a limiting abutment, which can be set to be engaged by the cushioning means, and hence permit the butterfly valve to be limited to a certain position, and thereby enable only sufficient would permit the motor to drive the vehicle at no greater speed than that for which the control device is set.
' Another purpose is to provide a housing for the gravity member or weight, offset to one side with relation to the insert casing, including a cover plate for the housing fastened in place by invisible fastening means, the set abutment, where it is arranged in the housing is also mounted invisibly, thereby preventing unauthorized persons from tampering with the same and changing its adjustment, hence insuring that the vehicle can only operate at a set speed.
It is to be understood that the particulars herein given'are in no way limitative, and that while still keeping within the scope of the invention, any desired modification of details and proportions may be made in the charge to pass into the intake manifold as construction of the appliance according to circumstances.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts to be hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a portion of a carburetor and a portion of the intake manifold, showing the insert casing as applied, with the offset housingil-lustrating the gravity or weight member in dotted mes.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the insert casing and housing removed, illustrating the interior construction of the housing and the mounting of the weightor gravity member.
Figure 3 is a detail sectional view-on line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a detail sectional view on line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a detail view of the cover plate 17.
Figure 6 is a detail perspective view of the gravity or weight member 9.
Figure 7 is a sectional view on line 7-7 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings 1 identifies a portion of a carburetor and 2 a portion of an intake manifold. 4
Arranged between the intake manifold 2 and one end of the carburetor is an insert casing 3, offset from which is a housing 4.
The insert casing is of a shape conforming to the flanged ends of the casing of the carburetor and the intake manifoldtherebeingbolts 5 passing through the flanges and the insert casing to connect the parts together. The insert casing has a passage 6, in which a butterfly valve 7 is mounted. The butterfly valve is carried by a shaft 8, which is mounted in bearings of the insert casing and the housing, and one end of the shaft has fixed to it a gravity or weight member 9, the heav end 10 of which swings on an arc, which con orms to the housing, which is in turn segment shaped to accommodate the swing of the gravity or weight member.
Fastened to the pivoted end of the gravity or weight member is a device 11 comprising upper and lower spring blades 12 and 13,
PATENT orrlcs I which are disposed to extend at angles to the weight or gravit member. When the weight or gravity mem er is in its lowermost posi tion the lower spring blade limits and cushions the same, due to the fact that the blade 13 rests upon the bottom wall 14: of the segment shaped housing. The upper spring blade 12 when the butterflyvalve responds to the suction impulses of the engine contacts with an abutment screw 15. This abutment screw when the speed control or governor is set, the motor vehicle may operate at twenty five, thirty five or forty miles an hour, it depending upon the amou'nt of speed desired. The head of the screw is cut off flush withthe surface'16 of the housing, and where the screw is cut off the wall of the housing may be surfaced or otherwise finished off to render 1 Ltheflen-d'of the screw invisible.
"spring blade 12 not only contacts with the screw to limit the upward movement of the The upper gravity member, but also cushions it.
A cover plate 17 is fastened over the housing by means of screws 18, which are countersunk into the cover plate, and soldered or brazed over or otherwise finished to render the screw invisible.
In the operation the butterfly valve re- I sponds to the suction impulses of the engine,
and when the shaft of the butterfly valve rocks, it moves the gravity or weight member, and should the suction impulses of the engine operate at full. capacity, the upper spring blade 12 will contact with the abutment, and therefore limit the movement of the gravity member as well as the butterfly valve, and only permit sufficient charge to enter the intake manifold as would allow the motor vehicle to operate at a speed, with which the control device is set.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed is:
1. In a speed control for internal motors, the combination with an intake manifold and carburetor,'of an insert casing having a passage communicating with the intake manifold and the carburetor, means for fastening the parts together, a butterfly valve mounted in the passage of the insert casing and including a shaft, said insert casing having an offset housing in bearings of which one end of the shaft is mounted, a gravity member or weight mounted in the offset housing and carried by the shaft, upper and lower yieldable elements carried by the gravity member or weight, and abutment means set according to a desired closing movementof the butterfly valve, and with which the upper yieldable element engages for limiting the movement of the gravity memberas well as that of the butterfly valve, and a cover for the housing provided with invisible securing means therefor. 1 2. In a speed control for internal motors, the combination with a carburetor and an intake manifold, of an insert casing having a passage fastened between the intake manifold and the carburetor, said insert casing havin an offset housing of segmental shape, a shaft mounted in bearings of the housing at the smaller end thereof, the shaft passing transversely of the passage of the insert casing, a butterfly valve, on the shaft, res onsive to the suction impulses of the engine far rocking the valve toward a closed position, a gravity member mounted in the segmental shaped housing and movable with said shaft to resist the action of the butterfly valve, a device fastoned to the pivoted end of the gravity memher and having upper and lower spring arms, the lower arm contacting with the bottom of the housing to limit the gravity member in its lowermost position and cushioning the same and limiting the valve to its open position, an abutment in the upper wall of the housing and set to limit the butterfly valve to a pre-determined closing position, and with which the upper arm engages to limit the gravity member in its upward movement and the valve to said predetermined closed position, and a cover plate for the housing.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
