Description

March 1, 1932. J. A. BARTOSZ I RAKE .Filed April 21, 1931 Patented Mar 1, 1932 Ulll? TES PATEN JOSEIE A. BARTOSZ, OF SALEM, OREGON, ASSIGNOR OF ON E-HALF TO W. J. BRAUN AND WINONA RICE BBAUN, BOTH OF SALEM, OREGON RAKE Application filed April 21,
My invention relates to rakes in which flat sheet metal teeth are attached to a backing, and in which he latter is provided with an upwardly extending flange.
The objects of my invention are to manu facture a rake of extremely sturdy construction in which the flatmetal teeth can be equ. lly well used for ordinary cultivation of soil or for the raking of a lawn, and in which the upwardly extending flange can be used for leveling, weedinor hoeing.
Other objects and advantages are to be found in the construction and arrangement of the parts as will be described in the speciiication and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
I attain these objects with the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a long rake with a low top flange.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a short rake with a high and straight top flange.
Fig. 3 is an end view of 2 with th top flange modified into a hoe.
Fig. 4 is a section through Fig. 1 along the line 44.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The backing is bent of sheet metal in the shape of a Z to combine lightness in weight with a maximum of strength against bending. The downwardly extending front flange 1 furnishes a stop for the quick alinement of the teeth 2 as the latter are spot welded to the web 3 of t 1e hacking. The upwardly extend ing rear flange 4 may vary in height and shape according to requirements. That means: in the case of the long rake, illustrated in Fig. 1, where the rear flange 4 is merely used for the purposes of lei cling, said rear flange 4 can be left comparatively low; in the case of the short rake, which is chiefly used for cultivation around growing plants, the height of the rear flange 4 is somewhat increased and either left straight with a sharp edge to serve as a weeder in 2, or carried to sharp point to serve as a hoe as in Fig. 3. The teeth 2 are stamped of sheet metal. The upper edges of each tooth is bent overat right angles,
1931. Serial No. 531,671.
is stamped into the tooth where the same joins the backing. Since the end teeth 2 are most liable to abuse and bending, the web 3 of the backing is bent over at the ends, parallel with the end tooth 2 and spot welded thereto as shown at 7 The socket 8 for the insertionof the handle 9 is a conical shell, split at the smaller end, and the split portion is then flattened at a suitable angle to provide cars 10 with which the socket 8 can be riveted to the web 3 of the backing. The axis of the handle 9 and the front edge of the teeth should preferably form an oblique angle.
Having thus described my invention, it will be seen that my objects have been accomplished, and though I have shown the preferred form of construction, I reserve to myself the right to make minor changes, providing I do not contravene the spirit and principle of my invention.
I claim:
1. In rake, the combination of a metal backing, comprising a horizontal web,a downwardly extending front flange, an upwardly extending rear flange, and flat metal teeth spot welded to the web of the backing, the plane of said teeth being disposed at right angles to the axis of the web, the front edge of said teeth abutting against the front flange of the backing, the rear edge of said teeth being flush with the rear flange of the backing and a conical socket riveted to the web of the backing.
2. In a rake, thecombination of a metal backing, comprising a horizontal web, a downwardly extending front flange, an upwardly extending rear flange having a sharp ened edge, and fiat metal teeth having a vertically extending reinforcing ridge stamped into said teeth, the upper edge of said teeth being bent at right angles and spot welded to the web of the backing, the ends of said web being bent over at right angles and spot welded to the end teeth, and a conical socket riveted to the web of the backing.
3..In a rake, the combination of a metal backing comprising a horizontal Web, a downwardly extending front flange, an upwardly extendihgrear flange, said rear flange termi nating in a sharp. point at the center, and fiat. metal teeth, spot welded to the web of the backing, a conical socket split at the narrow end and extended into ears, said ears being riveted to the web of the backing, the axis of the socket and the front edge of the teeth forming an oblique angle. In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
JOSL A. BARTOSZ.
