In the modified form shown in Fior. 3, the metal member is formed from a single sheet l of suitable metal having the edges bent outwardly at right angles to form flange portions 2 and then doubled back and extended past the back of the channel so formed to form the opposite flange portions 2b, the fillers being applied and secured as above explained.
In Fig. 4 a modification is shown wherein the metal body member consists of `a single element lh having the flange portions 2C and 2d formed integrally therewith in any suitable manner. Y, 1
In the structure illustrated as a further modification in Fig. 5, the metal body-consists of a pair of channel members lC and ld applied back to back, the flanges, 2e and 2f, of said channels being matched to form a smooth metal facing along the edges of the straightedffe.
In all of the several modified structures shown, the metal body member l is made from relatively light metal, said body being effectually reinforced f and braced by the light wooden fillers to produce a rigid body andat the Sametime keeping the tool light so that it can be conveniently used.
In operation, the straiglit-edge is used in the ordinary manner. In placing the straight-edge upon a strip of paper to be trimmed, the downwardly disposed flanges 2 rest upon the surface of the paper and the sharp right-angled corners of the flanges effcctually grip the surface of the paper and resist movement of the straight-edge over' the paper, thus permitting the straight-edge to bel easily and effectively held in position while `the paper istrimmed along the edge of the straight-edge as a: guide. The fillers present smooth unbroken surfaces` which cannot f scratch or injure the paper, and effectually protect and conceal the securing screws 6.
Applicant is aware that straight-edge tools have been'known and used heretofore, and therefore does not claim such a tool broadly as his invention. The improved structure disclosed, however, constitutes a new and imi proved article of manufacture, and the invention "consists inthe specific details ofv construction and ar 'angement illustrated and described, together with such modifications as may fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- A straight-edge comprising a metallic frame member of I-shaped cross-section having a solid web portion and` provided with flanges formed integrally therewith and disposed at right angles to the web along opposite sides thereof, thevflanges having true right-angled corners along the outer edges thereof; wooden fillers fitted within the channels delined by `the flanges along opposite sides of the web, the outer edges of the flanges projecting beyond the outer faces of the fillers upon both sides of the web; securing means t-o clamp the fillers rigidly to the web, said means being exposed only upon the outer face of one of said fillers; and a facing secured upon said outer face of said filler and embraced between the flanges to cover said exposed portions of the securing means, the edges of the flanges projecting beyond the outer face of the facing.
In witness whereof, I hereunto set my signature.
IVILLIAM B. PETRER.
