Description
' tapering.
Patented Mar. l, 1932 ,PATENT OFFICE JOL-IN IB. BAXTER, 0F TROY, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO COVERT MANUFACTURING COM- PANY, OF WATEBV'LIET, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK SNAP HOOK Application led May 6,
rhis invention relates to improvements in snap hoohs of the class that have a tubular body or barrel in which slides a spring pressed bolt cooperating with a hook at one end of the tubular body or barrel and having a thumb piece for operating the same, the tubular body or barrel being provided in the forward part thereof with a longitudinal guide slot for the shank of the thumb piece.
ln snap hooks of the type referred to it is common practice to employ a bolt that has its forward portion, which normally engages the bill of the hook and closes the mouth of the same, reduced in diameter and formed ln the use of such devices, the forward end portions of the barrel bordering the longitudinal guide slot therein are subjected to wedging action and outward pressure by the forward end portion of the vsliding bolt which causes a gradual spreading apart of the forward end portions of the barrel at either side of the guide slot with the result that the sliding bolt is left loose at the front end of the guide slot free for upward play out of proper alignment with the bill of the hook, which as will be appreciated, seriously impairs the efliciency of the device.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved snap hook of the general type referred to in which the tubular body or bar.- rel at its forward end adjoining the longitudinal guide slot is strengthened and so formed as to close the slot at the forward end of the barrel and prevent spreading of the 'Y same by the bolt.
A further obj ect of the invention is to provide an improved construction of bolt snap of the character referred to which will be of a strong, ecient, reliable nature and of simple, practical construction that can be manufactured at low cost.
The invention with other objects and advantages thereof, and the particular construction, combination, and arrangement of parts comprising the same, will be understood from 1929. Serial No. 360,946.
the hereinafter contained detail description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof and illustrating one embodiment of the invention.
ln the drawings:
Figure l is a top plan view of a complete bolt snap constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly in longitudinal section.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the casting or blank.
Fig. i is a side elevation of the casting or blank.
Fig. 5 is a transverse section on the line 5-5 of Figure 3.
Fig. 6 is a transverse section on the line 6-6 of Figure l.
Fig. 7 is a transverse section on the line 7 7 of Figure 3.
Vhile a specific embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the drawings, it will of course be understood that minor changes and modifications may be made in the particular construction shown, and the invention may be embodied in other forms as will appeal to those skilled in the art and falling within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to a detail description of the particular embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawing', 1 designates the tubular body or barrel with a hook 2 at one end and an attaching eye 3 at its other end, 4 des- .Lim
ignates the bolt slidable in the tubular body or'barrel 1, said bolt having a tapered for ward end port-ion 5 and being provided with a thumb piece 6. The tubular body or barrel l is provided in the forward portion there of at its upper side with a longitudinal guide slot for the shank 8 of the thumb piece 6. Interposed between the rear wall 9 of the tubular body or barrel and the inner end of the bolt 4 is a coiled spring 10. The tubular body or barrel, in the particular construct-ion shown, is of the cored type, the saine being cast with a core, the peripheral wall of the rear portion of the blank or casting being solid or closed throughout.
In accordance with the present invention the tubular body or barrel 1 is preliminarily formed as illustrated in Figures 3, t and 5 of the drawings, the saine being open at its forward end adjoining the slot 7 and provided with a raised extension portion 1l at either side thereof forwardly of the longitudinal guide slot 7, said raised extensions being oppositely disposed and projecting outwardly beyond the outer face of the main peripheral wall of the tubular body or barrel, the casting or blank at its outer end being elliptical in cross section as shown in Figure 5.
The tubular body or barrel l, as preliminarily formed, permits of the ready insertion of the bolt A and spring 10. After the insertion of the spring 10 and bolt i within the tubular body or barrel l, the raised extension portions 11 are compressed and forced inwardly to the position indicated in Figure 6, in abutting relation, closing the guide slot 7 at the forward end of the tubular body or barrel. After the raised extension portions `11 have been forced inwardly to close the guide slot, the forward end portion of the barrel is substantially cylindrical and of substantially the same interior diameter as the interior diameter of the main part of the tubular body or barrel as shown in Figure 6. The raised extension portions l1 may be and preferably are, as shown, of greater thickness than the thickness of the main peripheral wall portion of the tubular body or barrel, the barrel structure being thus additionally strengthened and reinforced at the forward port-ion thereof adjoining the slot.
It will be noted that the particular construction hereinbefore described strengthens the forward end portion of the tubular body or barrel adjoining the longitudinal slot and closes the slot at the forward end of the barrel, the resulting construction being of a strong, durable, eliicient nature that will prevent spreading of the forward slotted portion of the barrel, and the structure being lsoilioh as to be easily manufactured and assemed. Y
What I claim is:
A bolt snap hook casting including a tubular body or barrel part with a hook at one end and having a longitudinal slot in its forward part at its upper side, the peripheral wall of the rear portion of the tubular body being solid throughout, said tubular body or barrel part being open at its forward end portion adjoining the slot to permit the insertion are forced inwardly in abutting relation, the
guide slot will be closed at the forward end portion of the barrel.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature.
JOHN B. BAXTER.
of the bolt and spring, and having relatively y short oppositely disposed raised extensions at its forward open end at either side thereof, said raised extensions projecting out-
