This invention relates to book marks, and has particular reference to the type of book mark set forth in my prior U. S. Letters Patent No. 1,540,777, dated June 9, 1925.

The primary object of this invention, like that described in my above mentioned prior patent is to provide a device which may be readily attached to the cover of a book to mark any desired page thereof irrespective of III the thickness of the book.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a book mark having all of the good functional qualities of the device shown in my prior patent, but which includes certain 15; changes in construction which simplifies the construction and adds to the attractiveness of the article.

A further object resides in a book marker which embodies a clamp of substantially U- 2D shape in configuration for attachment to the cover of a book and to which a flexible ribbon marking strip is attached by notching the bight portion of the clamp and hinging an eye member or link thereto, the strip freely .5: passing through said link to permit of the adjustment of the length of the ribbon strip therethrough for use upon books of different lengths.

A further object is to produce a book mark at; which is constructed of a minimum number of parts and which may be expeditiously as sembled so that the article is simple of construction and inexpensive of manufacture.

With these and other objects in view, the

j; invention resides in the certain novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, the essential features of which are hereinafter fully described, are particularly pointed out in the appended claims, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Referring to the drawings by reference characters, the numeral 10 designates my improved book marker in its entirety which includes a substantially U-shaped resilient clamp 11 which is constructed of a single piece of flat bendable resilient material such as steel, brass or the like. The blank from which the clamp is constructed is bent intermediate its ends to provide a relatively long clamping jaw 12 and a shorter clamping jaw 13. Al- 99 through the j aw 12 is longer than the coacting jaw 13, the latter jaw is wider and has its side portion bent inwardly to provide clamping wings 1%14. The jaws 12 and 13 are spaced from each other and are normally dis posed in close proximity and may be expand- 7 ed or separated so as to fit over book covers of different thicknesses.

The. bight portion 15 of the .U-shaped clamp 11 has its opposite side edges cut another away or notched as at 16 and hinged or swingingly mounted upon the bight portion is an elongated eye or link member 17, the said member 17 being of a length so that the end walls are disposed in the path of the opposed walls of th notches 16. The notches serve to permit swinging movement of the eye member to opposite sides of the clamp and the opposed walls thereof act as stop shoulders for limiting the swinging movement of the same in opposi;e directions. When the eye member is in engagement with either of the stop shoulders, the same will extend at right angles to the length of the clamp.

Threaded through the eye or link member 17 is a flexible marking strip or ribbon 18, and by pulling one of the looped ends of the marking strip, the said strip may be adjusted as to length so as to be applicable for marking the pages of books of different lengths.

In practice, and as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings, the clamp 11 is attached to one of the covers A of a book B, by sliding the mouth of the clamp over the top edge of the cover. The resilient wings 14 of the jaw 13 embrace the outside of the cover, while the longer jaw 12 extends against the inside of the cover, and the two jaws coact to clamp the device in position against accidental shitting or displacement. After the device has been applied to the cover of the book any pages C of the book may be marked by insorting the ribbon or strip 18 therebetween, as shown in dotted lines in Figure 1. lVhen the ribbon is in marking position, the eye or link member 1? extends outwardly beyond the jaw 12 but is prevented from sliding down either of the jaws by reason of the opposed walls of the notches 16.

In Figures 5 and 6 of the drawings, I have illustrated a slightly modified form in which the clamp 19 has its bight portion 20 notched as at 21 on its opposite sides, but the notches in this instance do not extend for the full width of the bight portion, but only approximately one half the width thereof. The elongated eye or link member 22 is hinged to the bight portion and permitted to swing outwardly beyond one side of the clamp 20 only instead of on opposite sides as shown in the preferred form.

In the form shown in Figures 7 and 8 of the drawings, the resilient clamp is designated at 23 and has a bight portion 2 1 which is slotted transversely at 25, the slotted portions being isposed adjacent opposite ends of the bight portion. The link or eye member 26 is hinged to that portion of the bight defined by the slot 25. In this form the link or eye may be swung to a position to extend beyond the opposite sides of the clamp and the result is the same as described in the preterred form.

In Figures 9 and 10, the substantially U- shaped clamp is designated at 27 and the bight portion at 28, the opposite edges of the bight portion centrally thereoi being provided with inwardly extending notches 29 through which the opposite ends of the elongated eye or link 30 extends. In this form, the eye member is prevented from swinging due to the opposed walls of the notches 29.

In Figures 11 and 12, the substantially U- shaped resilient clamp is designated at 31 and is provided with alined openings 32 in the opposed clamping jaws thereof through which the ends of an elongated eye or link 33 passes. In this form the link is slidable to positions on opposite sides of the clamp member, but is prevented from pivotal movement.

In Figures 13 and 14, the substantially U shaped resilient clamp 3% is of the same construct-ion as the clamp 23 shown in Figures 7 an d 8, and is provided with transverse slots 35 extending across the bight portion 36. An elongated eye or link member 37 is provided with an offset portion 38 which engages the bight portion between tl e slots 35 in order to increase the length of the eye to that oi the width of the clamp.

In Figures 15 and 16 the substantially U- shaped resilient clamp is shown at 39, the bight portion being provided with spaced openings lO through which the opposite ends of an elongated eye 41 pass. In this form the eye member is loosely connected to the clamp but is prevented from swinging movement.

In Figures 17 and 18, the substantially U- shaped resilient flange is designated at 42 and extending through alined openings provided in the opposed jaws of the clamp adjacent the bight portion thereof, are links to which the elongated eye 14 is pivotally connected. The links 43 are so spaced with respect to the length of the eye member 44 that the said member is prevented from longitudinal sliding movement but is free to swing to opposite sides of the clamp.

In Figures 19 and 20, the substantially resilient U-shaped clamp is designated at 45, the bight portion of which is provided with outstruck eyes or bearings 46, disposed in alinement, and to which the elongated eye or link member at? is pivotally connected. The eye member is pivoted to the clamp substantially central of the bight portion so as to be capable of swinging in opposite directions beyond the opposed sides of the clamp.

It will be understood that in the modified form shown in Figures 5 to 20, no flexible strip or ribbon has been shown in connection with the various eye members but such marking strip will be connected to the eye members in the manner shown in Figures 1 to 4 inclusive. Also, in order to effect connection between the various eye members and the clamp, it is necessary that the said eye members be split, the meeting ends of which may be welded or otherwise secured together in order to impart that the ring or link members are constructed of a continuous piece of metal.

lVhile I have shown and described several embodiments of my invention, it will be understood that various other changes in construction may be resorted to if desired, and I do not wish to limit myself to the exact structural details herein set forth nor to anything less than the whole of my invention limited only by the appended claims.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A book marker comprising a substantially U-shaped clamp member, an elongated eye member hinged to the bight portion of said clamp member, and a flexible marking strip threaded through said elongated eye member.

2. A book marker comprising a substantially U-shaped clamp having recesses at the bight portion thereof, an elongated eye member hinged to the bight portion of said clamp and engageable with the opposed walls of said recesses for limiting the swinging movement of said eye member in opposite directions, and a flexible marking strip threaded through said elongated eye member.

3. A book marker having a resilient spring clamp member of substantially U-shape in configuration, inwardly bent portions provided on opposite sides of one of the legs of said clamp member, a flexible marking strip, and means provided on the bight portion of said clamp member for loosely connecting said marking strip thereto.

4. A book marker comprising a resilient clamp member, an elongated eye member hinged to said clamp member, and a flexible marking strip freely threaded through said elongated eye member.

5. A book marker comprising a resilient clamp member of substantially U-shape in configuration, opposed notches provided in said clamp member at the bight portion thereof, an elongated eye member hinged to bight portion and being of a length so that the ends of said eye member are disposed in the path of the opposed walls of said notches for limiting movement of said eye member in opposite directions, and a flexible marking strip threaded through said elongated eye member.

6. A book marking device comprising a substantially U-shaped resilient clamp member, an eye member loosely connected to the bight portion of said clamp member, and a flexible marking strip threaded through said eye member.

7 A book marking device comprising a substantially U-shaped clamp constructed of a single piece of resilient material, notches provided in opposite sides of the bight portion of said clamp, an elongated eye member loosely connected to the bight portion of said clamp, the end portions of which engage opposed walls of said notches upon swinging of the said e 'e member in opposite directions, and a flexible marking strip threaded through said elongated eye member.

8. A book marking device comprising a resilient clamp of substantially U-shape in configuration, an elongated eye member, hinge means for securing said elongated eye member to the bight portion of said clamp for swinging movement to opposite sides thereof, and a flexible marking strip threaded through said eye member.
