Description

SEALING cAus.
' No.184,713. Pa tented'Nov.28,1876.
m M F D Minus mmfiwmm UNITED STATES WILLIAM W. KARSHNER, OF AUBRY, KANSAS.
IMPROVEMENT lN SEALING CANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 184,713, dated November 28, 1876; application filed May 1, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. KARsH- 'NER, of the town of Aubry, in the county of The object of my invention is to control and regulate in size "and quantitythe flowing stream of melted sealingwax while sealing cans, jars, vases, 860., containing fruits, berries, jellies, and other edibles.
M y invention consists in the improvement of cups for sealing vessels containing fruits and other edibles, as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved cup, showing the-relation and attachment of all the parts when complete. Fig. 2 shows the several parts detached from the cup.
H represents the body of the cup, which is constructed in the ordinary manner of pint tin-cups, with the exception of the handle, which is changed, or may be changed in shape and position, so as to keep the fingers from coming in contact with the hot cup, and for the greater convenience of operating the cutoff with the thumb while sealing. A is a plate or slip' of tin or other metal, covering about one-half ot the top of the cup and soldered to the rim. B is an orifice or opening in the plate A near its lower edge, through which the melted wax is poured in sealing. U is a gage or cut-off attached at one end by a rivet or screw, D, to the upper edge or corner of the plate A, while the other end is freely movable up and down by the thumb while sealing, and is held and caused to work closely to the plate A by the strap or slide E. G is a thumbscrew passing through the nut F, soldered to the plate A, which thumb-screw is for the purpose of gaging the cut-01f O in the distance it shall open, so as to obtain uniformity in the size of the stream of flowing wax while sealing the same or different cans.
It \villreadily be seen by the above description and reference to the drawings that I here have a perfect automatic sealer, operated and controlled at will by the hand and thumb of the operator, so as to produce a perfection in sealing, such as cannot be done without the use of this or a similar device.
Having thus described myinvention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Paten tr The combination and arrangement of plate A, having the orifice B, with the gage or cutofl' U, and the thumb-screw G, with a cup, for the purpose and substantially as herein shown and described.
WILLIAM W. KARSHNER.
