ORNAMENTAL FOUNTAIN Filed Aug. 21, 1931 IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII I 2 IPZNTOZ I Patented Mar. 1, 1 932 UNITED STATES- RUDOLPE W. MILLER, 01 BROOKLYN, NEW YORK ORNAMENTAL FOUNTAIN Application filed August 21, 1931. Serial Ii'o. 558,429.
This invention relates to display devices, such as ornamental fountains or the like, and an object of the invention is to provide a device of this type constructed and arranged to have novel and attractive features wh1ch render it particularly adapted to places of public or semi-public gathering.
One embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing which is a sectional diagrammatic view of a preferred construction, although it will be apparent that numerous modifications can be made therein.
The particular embodiment of this invention which ,has been chosen for the purpose of illustration, includes afountain having a radio outlet associated therewith, the whole being provided with ornamental and eyearresting features. The fountain includes a basin 5 having a water nozzle or outlet 6 and a sound or radio outlet 7 associated therewith. As'illustrated, the water and sound outlets are mounted upon a suitablesupport 8 of any desired type or form, such as the figureillustrated, which-in turn is mounted on a rotatable pedestal 9 located above the center of the basin 5. The supporting structure for the rotating pedestal 9 is concealed within'a hollow tubevlO in the basin below aothe normal water level. A water chamber 11 is located below the basin 5 and-a water tube 12 extends upwardly therefrom to a suitably supported hollow casting 13 connected to the topof the water tube and having a lateral y disposed water outlet 14 at one side thereof. A flexible copper tube or the like 15 extends from the water outlet 14 upwardly through a hollow supporting member 16 upon which the edestal 9 is mounted. The copper water tu 15 extends through the interior of the support 8 to the water outlet or nozzle 6. Sound is conveyed to the ornamental horn 7 or other sound outlet from a sound-conveying tube 17 connected at one end with a source of sound, such as a loud? speaker diaphragm or the like, byineans of a sound tube and conduit 18 extending upwardly through thewater chamber 11 and through the water tube 12 to the casting'13 where it is connected toa copper tube 19 extending upwardly from the sound passage 20 in the casting through the supporting member 16, pedestal 9 and figure 8 to the sound outlet 7. For simplicity of illustration, I have illustrated the sound outlet 7 as 66 an ornamental horn to which sound is conveyed through the connections described. However, it will be apparent that the horn 7 can be a suitable radio loud-speaker actuated from any desired source (not shown), the 60 wiring connections to the speaker extending upwardly through the conduit 18, tube 16, etc.
The ornamental figure 8 is adapted to be rotated, and for this purpose a gear 21 is secured to the water tube 12 above the water chamber 11 and driven by a chain 22 connected to a gear 23 which is in turn 0 erated from a suitable transmission 24. T e tube 12, the casting 13 and associated parts are,
supported for rotation, and the hollow pedestal supporting tube 16 extends upwardly through a suitable packing 25 provided at the bottom of the fountain basin 5. The conduit 18 being secured to the casting 13 rotates therewith, a packing 28 at the bottom of the water chamber 11 and a similar packing 27 at the union 28 which connects the tube 17 and conduit 18, permitting-such rotation. A water pump 29 draws water from the basin through-a connection 30 and delivers it to the water chamber 11 through a suitable pipe 31, providing for circulation of,v the water without requiring "any outside connections. A suitable source of power suchas the motor 35 32 drives the pump 29 and also drives the transmission 24- through "a suitable gearreduction boxi'33, The basin 5 is provided with a compartment 34 for variously'colored electric lights 35 connected to the usual circuits 36 which are controlled by a rotary three-way switch 37 of standard construction. The switch isslowly operated from thefrlansmission24 by a suitable chain-38 or the I Dr 1e.; It will be? apparent that operation of the'{ motor 32 will cause thepump to circulat'e'wm 1 1 ter from-the basin 5 ,throughthe water cham-- 1 ber- 11,-tube 12 and connecting ipe 15 to the r water outlet or nozzle, 6. At e same time, E
the motor will rotate thesupporting mechanism for the figure 8 and the latter will slowly rotate above the fountain. Sound, radio programs or the like, can be provided through the horn or sound outlet 7, either by connecting the "outlet through the tubes 17, 18 and 19 with the diaphragm of a loudspeaker, or else providin a loud-speaker at the point 7 and running t e connecting wires through the tube 17 and conduits 18 and 19. Operation of the gear-reduction box 33 and the connected transmission 24 not only rotates the figure 8, but causes operation of the light-controlling switch 37 so as to cause the lights 35 to play upon the fountain and figure with constantly changing colors.
I claim as my invention:
