FREDERICK JONES, OF GLOUCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SWIVEL ATTACHMENTS FOR-FISHING-LINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 184,627, dated November 21, 1876; application filed June 5, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK JONES, of Gloucester, of the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Swivel Attachments for Fishing-Lines; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Flgnre 1 is a sideview, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section, of one of my improved articles.
It is to enable the gauging-line of a fish hook or hooks to be readily connected with or disconnected from the fishing-line.
It is composed of a ring, a double-flanged tube, and a swivel, consisting of a single piece of wire, bent so as to formelastic arms and a catch-tongue, and a'tubular head, the latter loosely encompassing the tube between its two end flanges.
In the drawings, A denotes the gaugingline as secured at one end or at its middle to a ring, B, embracing the elastic catch-tongue a at its junction with the elastic arms 0 c of the swivel 0. The said swivel is composed of apiece of wire bent at its middle, so as to form the elastic tongue 01, with'its catch-recesses b b, and thence bent upward, as shown, so as o lorm elastic arms 0 c, to extend above 1 the tongue, such arms being subsequently bent in helices so as to form loosely around a tube, D, having a flange, d, at each end of it,
as shown, a tubular head, g. The fishing-line E goes through the tube, and is tied in a knot, k, to prevent it from being drawn out of such tube.
To disengage the ring from the swivel while the latter is held in the hand of a person, the swivel should be inverted and its elastic arms be pressed toward each other by the thumb and finger of I the hand, such causing the tongue to be contracted in a manner to enable the ring to readily escape from it.
Toengage the ring of the gauging-line with the swivel, the tongue is to be inserted in the ring, and the latter drawn along the tongue to its base.
I claim 1. The combination of the ganging-line ring B with the swivel 0, provided with the elastic arms 0 c and catch-tongue or, arranged as set forth.
2. Theimproved swivel G, composed of wire bent so as to form the elastic arms 0 c, catchtongue a, and tubular head g, all substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination of the double-flanged tube D with the wire swivel O, bent around such tube, and having the elastic arms 0 c and catch-tongue a, all being essentially as
