This invention relates to an apparatus for routing, and more particularly to `one for cutting channels in rackets intended to be strung.
In the manufacture of rackets it is the practice to cut channels in the upper portion of the bow head of a racket between certain l and it is necessary to break the corners down with a metal punch so they will be less likely to fray the strings; but even after all this workthese channels are so crudely made that they have always been unsatisfactory.
`ne object of my invention is to provide routing apparatus which will cut these channels to an even width and depth and leave a smooth, plane surface. j Another object has been to construct my apparatus sothatthe racket may readily be placed and held in working position, and so that the channeling may be quickly accomplished by simple operations. v
The foregoing and other objects which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, may be accomplished by a construction, combination and operative ar-` rangement of parts such as is disclosed by the drawings.

As illustrated, my deviceco'nsists of a jig or form 11 preferably made offmetalor some other durable material, whichis fastened to a table or bench 12 near the front thereof by screws 1B. A section of said table at the front thereof is cut out as at 14, shown 'in Figure 2 of the drawings. Saidfjig extends over and above said cutout portion 14. The shape of `said jig is such that the upper portion of the heard of a racketl contacts with the inner surface thereof.
Said jig 11 `is provided with uide blocks 17 on each side thereof, preferably opposite each other, which guides 17 extend downwardly. These blocks 17 i are `spaced apart on opposite sides slightly farther than the width or cross thickness of the wooden bow headof the racket whichis between them, so that it may be moved slightly.` between said blocks inllining it up with slots 18 which are out in said jig 11 at certain points. These slots 18 are `of such shape that channels 19 may be cut between holes 20 which are drilled through the bow head of the racket at certain pointsfor stringing purposes.
A routerQB is used to cut the channels, it having a guard Qii'at its lower end and a bit projecting beyond said guard, the projecting distance determining the depth of the channels 19, their width beingdetermined by the diameterof said bit. Said guard is of such a size that it fits into saidslots 1S and may be moved therein, the slots, of course, being `wider than the channelsto be cut and extending slightly beyond the holesQO so that said router 23 may be moved until the bit 25 reaches said holes; but not go beyond.` v

In combination a table and router apparatus, said apparatus comprising a jig shaped to conform to the upper outside portion of a racket bow head having slots therein which extend between and slightly beyond holes drilled in said bow head portion at predetermined points, said jig embodying guide members on opposite sides thereof spaced apart laterally slightly more than the width oi said racket bow head, said apparatus also comprising resilient means adapted to hold said racket in working position in said between said guide members and a lever to operate said means, said table having an opening at the front thereof wide enough to accommodate said racket bow head, said jig being fastened to said table at each side ot' 40 said opening and extending above and over said cut-out portion.
