This invention relates to an improved device, particularly adapted for use -inconnection with a drawer or other member to lock 1t within a cabinet or other supporting member.
- A n object of the invention is to provlde in combination with a drawer including a 'front panel adapted to be received in an aperture provided in a'cabinet wall and havlng means for abuttingly engaging outer portions of said wall adjacent to said opening to seal the joint between the cabinet wall and the drawer panel, a lock or catch for securing the drawer in its closed position, said lock comprlslng a member adapted to engage a portion of the cabinet to lock the drawer in a closed position, and said member bein adjustable whereby it may be positioned so t at when-the drawer 1s locked in closed position, the means on said drawer panel abuttinglyA engaged with the outer surface of the cabinet wall will be held rmly thereagainst in substantially leakproof fashion.
Other features of the invention reslde 1n the means provided for operating. the locking member; the means permitting adjustment of said member relativeto the drawer panel; and, in the general construction of the device whichis very simple and inexpensive whereby the device may be manufactured at small cost. j
In the accompanying drawings, there has been disclosed a structure designed to carry out the various objects ofthe invention, but it is to be understood that the invention is not confined to the exact features shown as various changes may be made within the scope of the claims which follow.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a detail sectional View a portion of a cabinet wall and the forward portion of a drawer mounted therein and locked to the cabinet wall;
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 showin the drawer unlocked;

7 Figure 4 is an enlarged detail sectional lgure-l' view on theline4-4of Figure 5 is a perspective view of the lockg member showing it removed from the de. vice j v Figure is a perspective'view showing the means upon which the locking member is adjustably mounted and supported; and
Figure 7 is a perspective view showing an element adapted to support the -latch-supporting member.
In the selected embodiment of. the inven-` tion` here shown, there is illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, a portion of a cabinet wall 2 having an opening) 3 therein through which a drawer 4 is mova le in the usual manner, as shown -in Figure 2. The means for the drawer may be of ordinary construction and is therefore not shown in the drawings.
The drawer is shown provided with a front wall 5 and the usual side walls 6. A panel 7 vhaving an overhanging marginal flange 8, is securedto the drawer 4 and spaced therefrom by suitable supporting members 9. The panel 7 is adapted to be received in the wall opening 3 in which position .the iiange 8 will abuttingly vengage the portlon of the cabinet wall adjacent to the opening 3, as best shown in Figure 1. The front wall 5 of the drawer is provided at its upper edge with a iange or ledge 11 preferably extending in a forward direction and having. its ends secured to the supporting members 9. e This flange strengthens the front wall 5 of the drawer 4.
A feature of this invention resides in the means provided for locking `the drawer in the closed position shown in Figure 1. To thus retain the drawer in closed position, a locking member 12, preferably of U-shaped cross section, as shown in Figures 4 and 5, is mounted upon a supporting member 13 having one -end pivotally connected to the frontA wall 5 of the drawer by means of a clip 14 secured to the drawer wall as shown.
- A suitable pin 16 connects the member 13 fiange 8 of the drawer panel 7.
to the clip 14 and preferably has a suitable spring 17 'mounted thereon adapted to constantly urge the supportin member 13 in an upward direction, as will e clearly understood b reference to Figure 1.
The ocking member 12 has a depending end portion 18, the upper portion of which 1s ada ted to engage the inner cornerg19 of the wall)opening 3, when the drawer is locked as shown in F1gure 19. When the portion 18 of the locking member is thus engaged with the wall 2 the flange 8 surrounding t e panel 7 will be firmly seated against outer portions of the cabinet wall, as hereinbefore stated, and thus seal the opening 3.
Another feature resides in the means provided whereby the locking member 19 may be relatively adjusted with res ct to the gb thus adjust the locking member, the spaced side walls 21 thereof are each provided with an elongated opening or slot l22 adapted to register with threaded a ertures 23 provided in the supporting mem er 13. Suitable screws 24 secure the locking member 12 to the supporting member 13. To relatively adjust the locking member 12 upon the member 13, the screws 24 are loosened sufficiently to permit the member 12 to be relatively moved uplon the supporting member 13, and, w en positione thereon so as to hold the flange 8 firmly against the outer surface of the cabinet wall, the screws 24` are ti htened, whereupon the member 12 when in t eV position shown in Figure 1, will lock the drawer to the cabinet wall in dust-proof relation. The depending end portion 18 of the locking member 12 is so shaped that when it is engaged with the corner 19 of the cabinet wall 2, it will have a wedging effect thereon which will constantly tend to draw the flange 8 firmly against the outer surface of the cabinet wall. This will readil be understood by reference to Figure 1, w erein it will be noted that the end portion 18 of the member 12 is angularly disposed with reference to the inner surface of the cabinet wall 2.
The means provided for actuating the locking member 12 to permit the drawer to be withdrawn from the cabinet, com rises a handle 25 having spaced legs or si e members 26, each apertured to receive a pivot pin 27, which pins are retained inoperative positions by means of a face plate 28, preferably having integral sockets 29 therein adapted to receive the pins 27, as best shown at the right hand side of Figure 3. The inner ends 31 of the handle legs 26 are shown bent upwardly and have a rod 32 interposed therebetween, as shown in Figure 3. The ends of this rod 32 are suitably secured to the end portions 31 of the legs 26 of the handle, by such means as nuts 33. The rod 32 is adapted to engagea depending portion 34 provided upon the supporting member 13, as shown in Figures 1 and 2.
The above described parts are so oriented that when an operator grasps the handle 25 and exerts a slight outward pull thereon, the handle legs 26 will be oscillated upon the pins 27 thereby causing the rodV 32 to be moved downwardly against the portion 34 of the supporting member 13, resulting in the locking member 12 being moved out of locking engagement with the corner 19 of the drawer wall, as clearly shown in Figure 2. As the operator continues to pull on the handle 25, the drawer may be moved to a position ex teriorly of the cabinet as will readily be noted by reference to Figure 2. To close the drawer, it is only necessary'to shove it back into the cabinet, whereupon the locking member 12 will automatically move into locking engagement with the corner 19 of the cabinet wall, becauseof the action of the spring 17.
The particular lock featured in this invention has been found particularly useful in connection with cabinets adapted for storing foods, where it is essential that the' drawers be locked in leak-proof relation so as to preserve the food stored therein. The structure is very simple and inexpensive in construction and readily lends itself to manufacture in quantity production whereby the cost thereof may be reduced to a I claim as my invention:
1. The combination with a cabinet having an opening in a wall thereof and a drawer slidably mounted therein and provided with a front panel bounded by an outwardly projecting4 ange adapted to engage outer surfaces of the cabinet wall to close said opening, of a lock .comprising a member p1votally mounted upon a wall of the drawer and having a depending portion, a handle comprising an arm traversing an opening in said panel and adapted for rocking movement therein, means on said arm engaging said dependin portion, means constantly urging sald mem er and arm upwardly, and a plate secured to said member and having a porl tion adapted to engage an inner portion of the cabinet wall to lock the drawer in position therein.
2. The combination with a cabinet having an opening in a wall thereof and a drawer slidably mounted therein and provided with a front panel bounded by an outwardly projecting ange adapted to engage outer surfaces of the cabinet wall to close said opening, of a lock comprising a member pivotally mounted upon a wall ofthe drawer and having a depending portion, a handle comprising spaced apart arms traversing openings in said panel, means pivotally supporting said arms in said panel openings, means on said arms engaging said dependingv ortion whereby when said handle is operate said member will be depressed, a U-shaped plate mounted u on said member and having a portion a apted to engage an inner portion of the cabinet wall whereby the drawer may be locked in position therein, a
