DRAWER GUIDE Filed June 29 1927 aertj F0 Patented Feb. 9, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ROBERT I. E'USTIS, OF LOS ANGEIQES, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO MOB-BIS NELSON, 01 LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA DRAWER GUIDE Application filed June 29,
This invention relates to improvements in drawer guides.
An object of the invention is to provide a drawer guide of novel construction which will enable a drawer to be completely withdrawn from within the structure support ing it and which will rigidly support the drawer in its withdrawn position. 4 Another object of the invention is to providea drawer guide of novel and simple construction which may be easily, quickly and cheaply manufactured, and which may be easily. and quickly applied to a drawer.
A further object of the invention is to provide a drawer guide having the above mentioned characteristics, which occupies a very small amount of space between the sides of the drawer and the sides of the supporting structure.
vide a drawer guide in which there is a stationary member and a slidable member, and
which slidable member will have positive engagement with the stationary member, yet
by tilting of the same, it may be caused to release its engagement therewith.
With these and many other objects in view which will more readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, which will hereinafter be more fully described, illustrated, andclaimed.
The essential featufis of -the invention involved in the carrying out of the objects indicated are susceptible to modification; but a preferred embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in
which:
Figure 1 is a sectional view taken through a supporting structure having a drawer mounted therein, showing my invention as applied to the structure and to the drawer.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken along the line 2-2 of Figure 1, and
Figs. 3 and 4 are respectively, perspective views of the two elements that co-operate to make up my improved drawer guideconstruction. 1
In manufacturing the combination device,

while the various elements thereof may be constructed in any suitable manner and of any suitable material, yet it is preferable to form the same from sheet-metal stampings on account of the cheapness, lightness and strength of the latter; but irrespective of these details in manufacturing, the essential features of the invention are always preserved.
In the accompanying drawings like reference characters designate like parts through out, and the supporting structure may be of any desired form such as in a table, cabinet, cupboard or the like. In the present instance it is illustrated as consisting of a pair of side walls one of which is shown at 10 and which has a vertical member 11 thereon. The drawers are shown at 12 and are adapted to be slidably supported between these strut members. My novel drawer guide consists of'a stationary element 13 attachable to the vertical strut 11 and a movable element 13' which is channel-shaped in cross section, and is adapted to engage loosely a bottom edge of the drawer.
The stationary member 13 comprises a flat plate having apertures 14 therethrough for the reception of wood screws orthe like. whereby the same may be attached to the vertical strut 11. A laterally extending flange 15 serves as a steadying member and engages one face of the vertical strut. A supporting flange is designated at 16, which flange is formed by cutting out a portion ofthe fiat plate and striking up the same. The outer end of the supporting flange 16 has a small upstanding portion 17 which has its upper edge inclined rearwardly and downwardly from the horizontal at an angle of approximately 15. A narrow thrust flange is designated at 18, which flangeis located .rearwardly of the supporting flange 16 and spaced upwardly therefrom a convenient distance. This flange 18 is provided from a cutout portion 19 in the plate, and at its outer edge is provided with a downwardly extending flange 20 similar to the flange 17 This flange '20 has its edge extendilrlig rearwardly of the flange 17. j
The movable member 13' is adapted to be supported upon the supporting flange 16 and between this flange and the flange 18. ThlS movable member comprises a strip of sheet metal, channel-sha ed in cross section, having a horizontal. ange 25 and a vertical flange 26. A pair of upstruck lugs 37 and 38 are provided on the flange 25, and a similar lug 38 is provided on the vertical flange 26 for purposes to be described later. The transverse Width of the flange 26 is exactly equal to the vertical distance between the flanges 16 and 18, and the transverse width of the flange 25 is approximately equal to the lateral distance between the flange 17 and the flat face of the member 13. A supporting block 41 fastened to the structure 11 is disposed immediately below the supporting flange 16 and gives additional support to said flange as well as the slidable member 13 and the drawer 12.
The foregoing description definitely sets forth the structure of my improved drawer guide, and I will now proceed with a description of the operation of the drawer guide and its application to a drawer structure.
In installing the device the drawer guide is disposed between the drawer and the structure supporting the same, and in a similar manner, another drawer guide which is a counterpart of the first mentioned guide, is disposed between the other side of the drawer and the structure. The second drawer guide does not appear in the drawin s, but is constructe'd as a counterpart. en the member 13 has been attached to the strut, the member 13 is inclined rearwardly and inserted between the flange 16 and the flange 18 so that the flange 20 overlies the vertical portion of the member 13, and the flange 17 engages the edge of the horizontal portion. The member 13 is then slidably locked to the member 13 and can be removed therefrom only by tilting the same rearwardly to clear the flanges 17 and 20. The drawer structure is loosely disposed with a lower edge in the angle of the member 13- A strip 29 is attached to the under side of the drawer and acts as a stop to prevent the drawer from being entirely withdrawn from the supporting structure. This strip 29 is adapted to bear with its forward end 35 against the upstruck lug 37 before referred to. The lug 38 similarly prevents bodily removal of the movable element 13' since the same is adapted to abut against the flange 20 when the movable member is extended. A groove 36 is cut in the side of the drawer to accommodate the drawer will slide upon the movable member 13' before the movable member slides within the stationary member 13. WVhen the strip 29 engages the lug 37, the slidable member 13' will slide within the stationary member 13 until such a time as the lug 38' engages the flange 20. In closing the drawer, the drawer will first slide upon the slidable member 13 until the front wall of the drawer engages the front end of the slidable member 13, and forces the latter rearwardly within the stationary member 13. When the drawer is removed, the slidable member 13 may easily be removed from the stationary member 13 by inclining the former rearwardly and moving the same laterally between the flange 20 and the flange 17.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, use and many advantages of the herein-described drawer guide will be readily apparent without further description, and it will also be understood that changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing'any of the advantages thereof.
