A still further object of the invention is the provision of means for evenly distributing the striping material in the formation ofthe stripe to insure an even and regular stripe. Referring to the drawings in detail, the body of the machine is indicated generally by the reference character 5 and includes a tank 6 to which a person may have access through o the doors 7 and 8 respectively. The constructionof the body of the machine is such that the contents of the tanlI maybeheated at all timesto insure the proper consistency of the material, best suited for striping road surfaces. i .i
The reference character 9 designates the discharge pipe that extends into the tank, the pipe being provided with an upstanding iil tering pipe section 10 through which the ma-` terial must pass on leaving the tank. At Athe forward end of the pipe 9 is a downwardly inclined pipe section 11 provided with avalve 12 thatcontrols the flow of. material through the pipe to the 'delivering pipe 18.
The delivering pipe 1s supported by means of the bracket 11i and carries a nozzle `15 at its lower end, there being provided a rod 16 operating through the delivering pipe and carry# ing a valve head 17 at its lower end to regulate theflow of material from thejdelivering pipe. l
ing also provided for supporting the outer end of the arm Qiagainst downward movement. 1 j j Forming an important feature of the invention is the distributor which is in the form of a rectangular frame, the width of the' distributor being equal to the width of the stripe to be formed, so that the sidewalls of the distributor will act as guides to guide the material and prevent itfroni smearing.
As clear shown by Figure 3 of the drawings, the side walls ofthe distributor are pros vided with elongated openings to receive the bolts 26 that also pass through the side members 27 of the` funnel or apron 28, so that movement of the distributing frame will be permitted, to compensate for irregularities In the road surface being striped by the machine.
` The side members 27 are connected `by means of the yoke 29 which is provided with Fries a plurality of openings in the leg members thereof to accommodate the bolts 30 to adjustably support the yoke 29. This yoke is provided with a central opening through which the pipe 13 extends, so that the pipe 13 will be held centered at all times.
rIhe reference character 31 designates an inclined bottom wall forming a part of the funnel or apron, and is adapted to receive material directly from the nozzle 15 to direct the material rearwardly into the distributing frame. Pivotally supported within the distributing fra-me is a spreading bar 31 which is connected to the rod 32 on which the coiled spring 33 is mounted, the coiled spring acting to normallyl urge the spreading bar downwardly. This spreading bar is of a length equal to the width of the distributing frame, so that material will be engaged by the spreading bar throughout the entire width of the distributing frame to form the stripe.
At the forward end of the distributor is a yoke 34 to which the chain 35 is connected, the chain leading to the forward axle of the machine to hold the frame in its true operative position against rearward drag.
The modification shown by sheet 4 of the drawings, illustrates a construction especially designed for use on rough surfaces, and comprises a substantially funnel shaped receiver 36 formed with a transversely elongated opening 37 disposed in the bottom thereof, the distributor being provided with an adjustable yoke 38 formed with an opening, through which the discharge pipe 39 extends, the pipe 39 carrying the nozzle 40, which is operated by means of a rod and lever such as shown by Figure 3 of the drawings.
The vertical adjustment of the yoke 39 is accomplished through the medium of the bolts 41 that move in the elongated openings 42 of the sidevmembers of the receiver 36. The lower end of the receiver is seated within the distributing frame 43, as clearly shown by Figure 5 of the drawings, and is of a width to closely fit within the side members thereof.
Elongated openings 42 are provided in the side members and accommodate the bolts 41 that are carried by the receiver 36 so that a vertical movement of the spreader will be permitted at all times to compensate for irregularities in the road surface. Positioned at the rear of the spreader is a spreading bar 46 which is normally held in an inclined position, and pressed downwardly by the action of the coiled spring 47 that surrounds the rod 48 to which the spreading bar 46 is connected.
A yoke 49 is also provided on this spreader and is designed to receive a chain that extends forwardly and connects with the front axle of the machine to brace the device against rearward drag.
I claim:
1. A machine for striping road surfaces,
including a wheel supported body, a pipe having a nozzle extending from the body, means for supplying material to the pipe and nozzle, a funnel into which the nozzle extends, said funnel including an inclined side wall, a distributor of a width equal to the width of the stripe being formed, said distributor having elongated openings, the lower end of said funnel being fitted within the distributor, bolts extending through the funnel and elongated openings of the distributor providing a normally loose connection between the funnel and distributor to movably support the distributor on the funnel, and means for spreading the material as it passes from the distributor.
2. A machine for striping roads, coinprising a body portion, a pipe having a nozzle at one end thereof, extending from the body portion, means for supplying material to the pipe and nozzle, an adjustable yoke mounted on the pipe, bolts extending laterally from the adjustable yoke, a funnelshaped receiver having elongated openings to receive the bolts to permit of free vertical movement of the funnel-shaped member with respect to the yoke as the funnel-shaped member moves over irregularities in the road surface, a distributing frame into which the funnel-shaped member extends, means for connecting the funnel-shaped member to the distributing frame to permit of vertical movement of the distributing frame with respect to the funnel-shaped member, and a spreading bar carried by the distributing frame.
3. A road striping machine, comprising a body portion, a pipe having a nozzle at one end thereof, mounted on the body portion, a yoke on the pipe, bolts extending from the yoke. a funnel shaped receiver having elongated openings to accommodate the bolts, bolts extending from the funnel shaped receiver, a distributing frame having elongated openings of lengths less than the lengths of the openings of the funnel shaped member, to adjustably mount the distributing frame on the funnel shaped member, means for delivering material tothe pipe, and a spreader within the distributing frame.
