My invention relates to improvements in die stocks, and particularly to those of the leader screw type.
Briefly stated,the invention has for its primary object the provision in a die stock, as characterized, of means whereby the dies may be adjusted or removed regardless of the relative position of the leader screw and its nut formed in the work holder and Without necessitating the unscrewing or separating of the leader screw from the work holder.
The invention also contemplates a die stock, as characterized, which is simple in construction, inexpensive of manufacture, and highly eflicient in practical use,-the invention also residing in certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of the various parts all of which will be readily understood and appreciated by those skilled in the art upon reference to the accompanying drawings in connection with the following detailed description.
It is to be understood that the'drawings illustrate what is now regarded as being, a preferred embodiment of the invention, although same is susceptible of other mechanical expressions within the spirit and scope of the subject matter claimed hereinafter.

which screw is received in the tapped central hole or recess of the work holder.
The die frame has a pair of handle sockets 17 for the reception of handles 18 whereby the frame along with the postcarrying ring may be rotated about the work holder,the die frame 9 being actuated in the direction of the work holder through the medium of the leader screw and its threaded connection with the work holder and likewise by reason of the engagement of the dies with the work.
Ordinarily, in a tool of this type, it is necessary in order to remove the dies for grinding or to secure new adjustments to unscrew the die frame, or rather turn the die frame so as to separate the leader screw from the work holder so that the posts 6 will be removed entirely from the post holes of the die stock to free the ribs 7 from the grooves in the dies.
However, in this tool I provide the postcarrying ring with a plate 20 pivoted as at 21 to the upper face by means oi the screw shown,-thc plate 20 having an arcual portion 20* projecting beyond the inner periphcry of the post-carrying ring: to engage the surface groove 23 adjacent the top of the neck 3. Thus, when plate portion 20" is in engagement with the top surface groove 23 of workholder 1 the post-carrying; ring: 4 is rotatably held against shoulder 3. When Ion 1 holder groove 23 so that the post-supporting the plate 20 is swung outwardly ring 4 may be moved upwardly to free post ribs 7 from plate 20 and adapted to seat in a hole 26 in the post-carrying ring. Plate 20 has a boss 27 in which latch 26 works, there being a latch actuating coil spring 28 normally pressing the latch outwardly, the spring being confined in place by a screw 29 in the end of the boss. It will be perfectly obvious that the plate 20 can be swung laterally so that its arcual portion 20 will be clear of the work ring 4, along with the plate 20, can be moved upwardly to withdraw the ribs 7 of the posts 6 entirely out of the grooves 7 of the dies 7 b so that same can be pulled out of their guideways in the die carrier or adjusted so as to present different die grooves to the ribs.
If desired, an adjustable stop may be provided to prevent the unpremeditated freeing of the dies even though the post ring be unlatched from the work holder. Such a stop is illustrated by the screw 30 in Fig. 6. This screw is idle in the normal operation of the die stock, but if it stands turned in to the limit as shown in this figure, the post ring 4, if released and brought toward the die carrying frame, will abut this screw before the ribs- 7 clear the dies, so that under these conditions, the dies are not released. One or more rotations of the screw outwardly will allow the ring to approach close enough to the die carrying frame to release the dies.
The taper of ribs 7 is about This, of course, can be varied. The tool is much lighter than others in its class and is very advantageous in that it involves no cam to turn or get gummed up,it being noted that each segment gets its taper from a separate post 6. In a cam tool where one segment or die is a trifle longer than the others the operation of the whole assemblage is prevented,a thing which is not the case with my tool. Further more, it will be noted that the boss 27 of the plate or latch element 20 serves. as a stop or abutment to limit the approach of the die frame toward annulus 4.
Having thus described my invention, What l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 15! 1. A device of the class described compris 'ing a die-carrying frame, dies removably supported therein. controlling means for said dies adapted to be disengaged from the dies in a certain position of the controlling means, a support for said controlling means, a body with respect to which said support is axially movable into position to release the dies, and a finger operated latch carried by said support and engageable with said body to pre- .vent axial movement of the support with relength of the work.
3. In a die stock having a work holder, an axially movable die-carrying frame having dies, and an actuating member for controlling the dies adapted to be disengaged from the dies in a certain position of the controlling means, a latch pivotally carried by said die actuating member and movable'to engage a portion of said work holder whereby to prevent movement of the actuating member axially of the work into posit-ion to release the dies.
4. The combination in a leader screw die stock having a work holder, a member rotatably mounted thereon and provided with die actuating means releasable from the dies without disconnecting the leader screw couple; of a latch element associated with said work holder and member and operable to prevent movement of the latter in a direction to free the dies.
5. The combination in a leader screw die stock having a work holder, a member rotatably mounted thereon and provided with die actuating means releasable from the dies when the member is immediately adjacentthe die holder; of a finger operated latch pivoted on the member and adapted to engage said work holder and operable to prevent independent movement of the member in a direction to actuate the dies away from the work.
6. In a die stock having a positive leader screw feed or the like and including a die carrier, a work holder and a post-carrying frame rotatable thcreabout, the post having die engaging ribs'tapercd to control movements of the dies as the die carrier moves relatively to said frame, said ribs terminating a sufiicient distance from the post-carrying frame to clear the dies when the frame is positioned close to the die carrier, in combination with a latch member associated with the work holdor and post-carrying frame for holding the same against relative axial movement. In a die stock having a die carrier, a work holder and a post-carrying frame rotat-. able thereabout. the posts having di engag= ingr llliH tapered to control movements of the dies as the die carrier moves relatively of an id frame. in combination with a latch member associated with the work bolder and postearrying frame for holding the same against relative avial movement but allowing such movement when desired. and said post ribs terminating short of the inner ends of said posts a distance approximating the thickness of the dies whereby when the post-carrying frame is elevated against the die-carrying frame the ribs will be freed of the dies to permit adjustment or removal thereof. and a stop element associated with the die-carrying frame and post-carrying frame and l'ieing positionable to limit approach of the same toward one another whereby to prevent the freeing of the ribs from the die except when desired.
9. In a die stock having; a work holder and a (llQ-2l1[ \'l1lfl' frame and means for etl ecting a positive feeding of the dieq'arryin frame toward the work holder in the thread cutting operation, the combination of die controlling means movable relatively of the die-carrying frame, said die-controlling means having omitted portions positionable to permit removal of the dies. and latch means associated with said die controllingmeans for preventing or allowing movement of the same to put. said omitted portions in effective position.

13. In a die stock, the combination of a diecarrying frame, dies removably supported thereon, a'work holder,- aring revoluble on the work holder, pins earned by the ring,
inclined ribs 0n the pins, said ribs terminating'short of the base of the pins, whereby, when the ring is close to the die carrier frame, the chasers are freed for movement in or out, and a lead screw connecting the dieca-rrying' frame with the work holder.
14. In a die stock, the combination of a die carrying frame, dies slidably mounted therein and each provided with a plurality of notches located respectively different distanees from the active end of the die, a revoluble ring, posts carried thereby, ribs on the posts each adapted to occupy either of the notches in a corresponding chaser, said ribs terminating short of the full length of the posts so that in a certain position of the ring without (llSllSSGlllblillQ the die stock the chasers are freed from the posts and may be moved in or out.
15. In a die stock, the combination of a die carrying: frame, dies slidably mounted therein and each provided with a plurality of notches located respectively ditlerent distances from the active end of the die, a Work holder adapted to be clamped to the work, a
lead screw connecting the work holder with the die-carrying frame, a ring rotatably mounted on the work holder but adapted to be freed therefron'i for longitudinal movemeat toward the die-carrying frame, a latch adapted to connect the ring with the. work holder, posts carried by said ring, and ribs on the posts each adapted to occupy either of the notches in a corresponding chaser, said ribs terminating a sutlieient distance short of the ring so that in a certain position of the ring, the chasers are freed from the posts and may be moved in or out.
16. In a die stock, the combination of a, cliaser-carrying frame, a work holder, a lead screw couple connected to the chaser frame and work holder respectively, a revoluble rino', posts *arried thereby adapted to coact with the ehasers to control recession thereof, a latch for coupling the ring to the work holder, and means whereby a certain position of the ring when released from thework Tholder ma free the Chasers whilethe Ework holder; an chaser frame are eonneeted by ,their -lead' screw. 17 In a die stock, the combination ofa. chaser-carrying frame, a work holder, :1 lead screwconnecting thetwo, a ring normally adapted to be revolubly mounted on the work holder, saidring carrying posts having ribs v ada ted to engage notches in the ehasers,

18. In a die stock, in combination of a die carrying frame, a workholder, a ring having. posts for controlling the recession of dies in the die carrying frame, there being one position of'the' posts where the dies are -free,-and a latch lever pivoted to the ring and having an alrcuate inner face adapted to oocupy an annular groove in the-work holder or clear the same, whereby the ring may move the'posts to releasing position.
