Description

Feb. 9, 1932.
G. w. HARTLAND 1,844,281
DUMPING GRATE Filed June 9! 1930 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 A Homey Patented Feb. 9, 1932 UNITED STATES GEORGE WILLIAM HARTLAND, OF BUFFALO, YORKv i DUMPING- GRATE Application led June 9, 1930. Serial No. 460,064.
This invention appertains to new and useful improvements in mcmerators, and more particularly to a novel dumping grate there-` for, especially adapted for use in conjunction with my shaking grate invention imparted in a co-pending application.
The principal obj ect of this invention is to provide a dumping grate structure capable of being operated conveniently and easily Without liability of injury to the operator.
Numerous important objects and advantages of the invention will be found in the following specification and claim.
In the drawings Figure 1 represents a top plan View of the novel grate structure.
Fig. 2 represents a fragmentary side elevational view disclosing the grate structure.
Fig. 3 represents a vertical sectional view, taken substantially on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction ofthe arrows.
Fig. 4 represents a vertical sectional view taken substantially on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals designate like parts, numeral 5 generally refers to the shaking grate assembly such as forms the subject matter of a co-pending application filed by me.
An elongated plate 6 is secured to the lower end of the assembly 5 and has an inwardly turned flange 7 at its lower end. Its upper edge portion of the plate 6, has a pair of bars 8 8 extending outwardly from its ends, and a pair of closely spaced intermediate bars 9 9, extending outwardly from the intermediate portion thereof.
The outer ends of these bars 8 and 9 at their lower sides are provided with depending bearings 10 through which the shaft 11 is journalled.
Between each pair of bars 8 9, a grate plate 12 is disposed and suitably secured to the shaft 11 as at 18. The ends of the plates 12 adjacent the plate 6 are provided with ears 14 depending from the bottom sidethereof. Y
An elongated rectangular shaped plate 15 has one longitudinal edge portion thereof, abutting the outer ends of the bars 8 and 9 and as is shown in Fig. 2, a flange 16 at its opposite longitudinal edge portion is secured to the front plate 17 of the incinerator. Through this plate 17 and the flange 16, is disposed the shaft 18, which at its outer end is equipped with the crank handle 19.
Apair of brackets 20 2O support the shaft 21 and from this shaft 21, the crank arms 22 extend rearwardly and theerear ends of these arms are pivotally connected as at 23, to the link bars 24, which in turn are connected to the ears 14 on the grate plates 12. These arms 24 are rigidly secured to the shaft 21 so as to move with the shaft when the same is oscillated.
A bevelled gear 25 is provided on the in* ner end of the shaft 18 and connected'with the larger bevel gear 26 on the shaft 21, the ratio being substantially three to one.
It can now be seen that when the crank handle 19 is partly rotated, the cranks 22 22 will be swung downwardly, and this action will lower the grate plate 12 in thefmanner shown in Fig. 2, so that clinkers and ashes thereon will be dumped into the ash bin underlying the same.
Certain changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to in the reduction to practice of this invention within the purview of the following claim.
Having thus described my invention what Y I claim as new is In a grate structure including an inclined shaking grate assembly and a horizontally arranged-front plate spaced from the front end of the grate assembly, spaced bars connecting the front end of the grate assembly with the rear end of the plate, a shaft journalled in the front end of `said bars and located under the same, grate plates arranged between certain of the bars and having their front edges connected With the shaft, de-
pending ears onthe rear edges of the plates,
links pivotally connected at their rear ends to said ears, a shaft, hangers connected With the front plate in which the last-mentioned shaft is journalled, arms on the last-mentioned shaft and extending rearwardly and having their rear ends pivotally connected to the front ends of the links and manually Operated means for oscillating the second shaft to cause the arms and links to rock the grateplates. Y
In testimony WhereolI afiix my signature.
GEORGE WILLIAM HARTLAND.
