Description
Feb. 9, 1932. E. L.. JASPAR MULTICLOVSURE HEAD VALVE ASSEMBLY Filed July 2l. 1930 fatentecl Feb. 9, 1932 UNITED STATES istanze PATE-Nr orifice y EDGAR L. JASPAR, OF VENTURA, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM D. SHAFFER, 0F BREA, CALIFORNIA Y MULTICLOSURE' HEADy VALVE ASSEMBLY Application led July 21, 1930. Serial No. 469,483.
This invention relates to valves and more especially to free floating disc-head valves and seating means therefor.
It is an object to provide an improved valve assembly comprising a seat means and a multi-part. closure in Which each such closure part is capable of making a complete shut-off of the flow-Way in the seat means; whereby to obtain a more effective closing of the flow-vvay and to secure very long life of the parts.
In deep Well drilling practice it is usual to circulate a mud or slush liquid Which is highly detrimental to the pumping and circulating apparatus because of the rapid Wear occasioned by attrition of grit on the metal parts.
An additional object is to provide closure parts in such relation and of such design that there is produced a seat Washing action due to displacement of a body of the liquid trapped between the mutual closure parts Which cooperate to form a small trap chamber.
A further purpose is to provide a valve assembly of few, simple and rugged parts; all having a mutual inter-guiding relation.
The invention consists in certain advancements in this art as set forth in the ensuing disclosure and having, With the above, additional objects and advantages, and Whose construction, combination and details of means, and the manner of operation will be made manifest in the description of the herewith illustrative embodiment; it being understood that modifications, variations and adaptations may be resorted to Within the scope, principle and spirit of the invention as it is more directly claimed hereinafter.
The ligure is an axial section of the assembly; with parts in closed relation.
In the form shown a seating means includes an annulus 2 adapted to be mounted in a relative support not shown and provides a flow-Way 3 for fluid being pumped.
Seatable on the top area of this seat 2 is a closure Which consists of a plurality of disc-like closures 4 and 5. The closure l has a bottom, marginal face 4a mutually conforming to a seat Zone 2a of the seat top area and also has guide lugs ib to freely reciprocate in the ring 2. Projecting from the top of the closure 4 is a stud 4 Working freely as a guide in and for the upper closure 5.
The upper closure 5 has a holloWstud 5a over the stud le and also has its lowerface concaved at 5b for reception o-f the closure 4: and allowing space above it when both closures are seated in the ring 2. The closure 5 has a marginal skirt flange 5C Whose lower face 5d is complementary to a seating zone 2d on the seat 2.
It Will be seen that both parts l and 5 of the valve closure may be fully seated at one time. When the valve is in action either closure 4 or closure 5 may open or may close before. the other; each making al full shut off When completely seated. If one closure is prevented from fully seating the other is free to make a full shut-off.
A feature of the valve is that there is a forceful seat cleaning or Wash flow between the Zones '2d and 5d as the trapped fluid is displaced from the upper chamber 5b by the closing movement ofthe closure 5 so that this face is kept clean and free of obstruc. tions so that if the inner closure does not make a tight seat then the upper Will. y
The Lhollow stud 5EL of the closure 5 is surrounded by a helical spring shown in dotted lines to aid in closing the valve, but not being claimed herein, as this is a conventional element. 1
Vhat is claimed is:
l. A Valve device comprising an annular seating means having a central flow-Way, landv a closure therefor including multiple closure parts having concentric seating relation on said means, said parts so coacting as to cause a forced Wash-flow between the seat area and the closure seating face of the outer closure part.
2. A valve device comprisingan annular seating means presenting concentric seat areas merging in a common plane, an inner closure disc having a sea-ting face closing on the inner area, and an outer closure disc closely telescoping over the inner disc and having a seating face closing on the outer area; whereby all of the liquid expressed by the closing outer disc forcibly Washesrthe outer seat area surrounding the inner, seated disc.
