i The invention relates to baling presses of that type having longitudinally extending slots inits end walls through which the'bar a of the compressing, plunger extends. The invention has for its main object the provision of means for closing the slots to prevent the material within the baling chamber from being forced therethrough. The invention'has for another object the provision of slot closure means, which is movable'upon movement ofthe compressing plunger to allow-movement of the compressing plunger bar. l/Vith these as well as other objects in View, the invention resides in the novel fea- 1 tures of construction and combinations 'and arrangements of parts as more fully herein after set forth.

As shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3, 1 is the baling chamber of the baling press, which is specifically formed by the doors 2 pivotally mountedupon the stationary'end wall 3, the doors having the transverse portions 4 at their free ends together forming the opposite,
end wall of the baling chamber. The stationary end wall 3'has the central longitudinally extending slot 5, while the portions 4 of the doors terminate short of each other to form the central longitudinally extending slot 6 in the opposite end wall. 7 is the compressing plunger, which is movable longitudinally within the baling chamber 1 and in the present instanceis movable downwardly toward the stationary platen to compressthe material within the baling chamber. extends through the slots 5 and 6 of the bal-. ing chamber and is actuated by suitable means such as the chain 9at each end of the baling chamber and outside the same, and extending over the wheels .10 and 11', respectively, at the upper and lower'ends of th i g chamber, the latter wheel being preferably power driven. The arrangementis suchthat upon upward movement of the plunger it will be carried upwardly from the balingchamher and tilted to permit the material to be compressed to be thrown into the baling chamber through itsupper end.
For the purpose of'preventing' the material withinthe baling chamber from passing out through the slots 5 and 6 or being forced outwardly through these slots during the compression movement-of the compressing plunger, we have provided the flexible meme ber 12 which extends longitudinally within each of the slots and around the wheels 13 and 14, respectively, at the upper and lower ends of the baling chamber. Thisfiexible connection is preferably acable of a diameter substantially equal to the width of either slotand having its ends connected to the plunger bar 8 so that it. moves with theplunger bar and will not interfere with the movement of the latter in the slots. 1
In the modification shown in Figure 4, the baling press is of the upstroke type, in which the compressing plunger 15 is movable upwardly toward the platen to compress the material within the baling chamber. The arrangement of the compressing plunger bar and actuating means is the same in both instances. However, in this baling press the exten'din '27 by means of the clevises 28.

Theclosure bar also has its-lowerinner edge cammed for engagement'with thecompressing plunger bar, it used in an upstroke t pe baling press.
"In the modification shown in Figures 7 and 8, the slot closure means is still different, it includingtheseries of pivotally connected fiat links 24, which normally register with each slot at its outer edge, each link being held -in this position as-by means ofthe coil spring 25. The linlrs extend upwardly above the baling chamber so that the uppermost link clears the compressing plunger bar when tilted, so that when the compressing plunger is lowered its bar comes successively into engagement with the links to laterally force the same-out of registration with the slot.

The cable then extends downwardly to near the bottom of the bnling press frame, to which it is connected by. means of the coil spring 83, which is suiiiciently strong to maintain the cable taut at all times. The sheave 81 is located to extend within the slot at that end of the b'aling chamber and as a resultthe portion ofthe cable on thecompressing side of the compressing plunger or in the present instance above the compressing plunger is always located in the slot.

In a baling press, a baling chamberhaving a slot in one of its walls, a compressing plunger movable within said chamber, a bar connected to said plunger and extending through said slot and a cable extending longitudinally of said baling chamber and having its end on the compressing side :of said compressing plunger extending within said slot, and sheaves 'upon said bar and around which said cable runs, said sheaves being located on the compressing side of said compressing plunger and'one sheave being positioned to locate the portion of said cable in engagement therewith within said slot.

In a baling press, a baling chamber having a slot in one of its walls, a compressing plunger movable within saidchamber, a bar connected to said plunger and extending through said slot, a flexible member connected to said bar for actuating the plunger, and a second-flexible member also connected to said bar and having portions extending longitudinally Within the slot for sealing the latter.
6. In a baling press, a baling chamber having a slot in one of its Walls, a compressing plunger movable Within said chamber, a bar connected to said plunger and extending through said slot, and means for sealing said slot including a member having portions extending longitudinally Within the slot and movable out of the latter by said bar.
7. In a baling press, a baling chamber having a slot mom of its Walls, a compressing plunger, movable Within said chamber, a bar connected to said plunger and extending through said slot, and a flexible closure member for said slot movable laterally out of registration with the latter.
8. In a baling press, a baling chamber having a slot in one of its Walls, a compressing plunger movable Within said chamber, and
means registering With said slot for sealing' the same including, a flexible member of a Width to substantially close the slot and having portions movable successively out of registration with the slot upon movement of the plunger.
