The releasing takes place immediately upon fusible strip 15 melting and pin 12 moving upward; as long as fusible strip 15 is not fused, the mechanical alarm 18 is set and ready for action.
To the under face of bracket 6 is secured, by screws 20, an insulating sheet or strip 21. A pair of contacts 22 is fastened to the insulating strip 21 to which wires 23 are attached, so that when the fusible strip 15 is melted and rod 9 and pin 12 move upwardly, the washer 13 will come in contact with said concontacts 23, thereby closing the circuit across and permitting an alarm 24 (Fig. 2) to be actuated; this alarm 24 can be located an any convenient part of a structure or building, and while I have shown in Figure 2 the conventional form of an electric bell, the alarm 24; may be a visible signal, as well as an audible signal, without departing from the spirit and scope of this invention. If the apparatus is placed in the cellar or basement of a building, in some cases there may be a possibility of the alarm 18 not being heard, in the case of a fire, and hence, I have provided alarm-operating means as a part of my invention for closing a circuit of an alarm or signal located in a distant part of a building or dwelling,
It will, therefore, be seen that I have produced a very simple device which will not only cause a fire extinguishing liquid to be discharged from a container, but synchronously a closing of a circuit for actuating an alarm, as well as releasing a set manuallyset alarm.
In Figures 6 and 7, I have shown my invention applied to an electric fixture such as a chandelier. In this embodiment, the container 4 is mounted on brackets 3, which brackets are fastened to a pair of vertical supports 25. The bracket 26 is fastened between the same pair of supports 25; otherwise the apparatus is similar in detail to that shown in Figures 1 to 5. In the canopy 27, I preferably locate an electrical alarm or signal 28, which is actuated synchronously with the operation of the means for perforating or destroying the fra e closure 5 (Fig. 2). This illustration ig. 6) shows how easily my invention can be adapted to an electric fixture or chandelier by reason of the practicability of my construction.
The wiring shown in Figures 2 and 6 is of the conventional type, since it is very simple to hook up an electric signal with the contacts 22 of my apparatus.
The operation of my apparatus is positive because the coil spring 10 (which is normally under pressure) will force the head 11 in somewhat violent contact with the fragile closure 5 immediately upon the fusing of the strip 15.
It will, therefore, be understood that I have produced a fire extinguisher comprising a container provided with a fragile closure, with means for destroying said fragile closure, and means operated at the same time said fragile closure is destroyed for actuating an alarm.
It is to be noted that casing 8 is threaded through the bracket 6 (Fig. 2) with the inner end of the casing resting against the insulating strip 21. Likewise the inner end of the coil spring 10 also rests against said strip 21 with the outer end of the spring always pressing against the head 11.
While I have described the preferred embodiments of my invention and illustrated the same in the accompanying drawings, certain minor changes or alterations may appear to one skilled in the art to which this invention relates during the extensive manufacture of the same, and I, therefore, reserve the right to make such changes or alterations as shall fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a fire extinguisher the combination of a vertical support, a container carried near the upper end of said support and having a fracturable portion, a bracket on said support below said container, a spring pressed punching device on said bracket and adapted to strike and fracture said fracturable portion of said container and cause liquid to be spilled therefrom, a. fusible strip below said bracket and carried by said support, and said punching device provided with an extension engaging said fusible strip, whereby the punching device is held in a set or inoperative position until said fusible strip is melted or fused.
2. In a fire extinguisher, the combination with a vertical support, of an inverted container detachably mounted on said support and having a fracturable portion, a bracket under said container and carried by said support, a spring pressed punching device on said bracket and adapted to engage and fracture said fracturable portion, a fusible strip mounted on said support beneath said bracket, and said punching device provided with a portion extending below said bracket and in engagement with said fusible strip for holding the punching device in a set position.
3. In a fire extinguisher, the combination of a vertical support, a container provided with a fragile portion mounted upon said support near its upper end, a spring pressed punching device mounted on said support below said container and adapted to travel when operated longitudinally of said supltl port into contact with said fragile portion and destroy same, a fusible strip mounted across said vertical support, and said punching device provided with a depending extension normally resting under said fusible strip, for holding the punching device in a set position.
l. in a fire extinguisher, the combination of a vertical support, a container provided with a fragile portion mounted upon said sup port near its upper end, a spring pressed punching device mounted on said support below said container and adapted to travel longitudinally of the support and into engagement with said fragile portion and destroy same when operated, a fusible strip spaced from and supported by and across said vertical support, and said spring pressed punching device including a laterally extending pin under and in engagement with said fusible strip.
5. in a fire extinguisher, the combination of a support, a container provided with a fragile portion mounted on said support, a bracket against said support, means holding said bracket in a secured position upon said support, a casing fastened at one end to said bracket, a rod extending through said casing and bracket, a head on the upper end of said rod, a spring in said casing and normally exerting outward pressure on said head, said head being adapted to engage said fragile portion and destroy same for causing liquid to be spilled or emptied therefrom, a fusible strip carried by said support beneath said bracket, and an extension extending from said rod and normally engaging said fusible strip.
6. ln a fire extinguisher, the combination with a vertical support, of an inverted container carried by the upper end of said support, said container provided with a fragile closure, a horizontal flat bracket detachably secured at one end against said vertical support and below said container, a casing threaded at its lower end into said horizontal bracket, a coil spring in said casing, a rod extending through said casing and coil spring, an arrow-like head threaded on the upper end of said rod with said coil spring bearing against the same, said head adapted to destroy said fragile closure, a in extending horizontally through the rod below said bracket, and a fusible strip extending across said pin and supported by said vertical support for holding the device in a set osition.
7. In a fire extinguisher, the com ination with a support, a container provided with a fragile ortion carried by said support, of a pair of horizontal screws threaded into said support, sleeves on said screws against said support, a fusible strip spanning the distance between and mounted on said screws and against the outer ends of said sleeves, lock nuts on said screws against said fusible strip, a punching device for destroying said fragile portion of said container, and said punching device provided with means extending under and engaging said fusible strip between said screws, substantially as shown and described.
8. In a fire extinguisher, the combination of a vertical support, a container provided in its lower end with a fragile closure, said container carried by said support, a spring pressed destroying device inde endently attached to said support below said fragile closure, a fusible element below said destroying device and independently attached to said support, and said spring pressed destroying device provided with extension means normally engaging said fusible element for bolding said spring pressed device in an inoperative position.
9. In a fire extinguisher, the combination with a support, of a container provided with a fracturable portion on said support, a mechanical alarm including releasable alarm means on said support near said container, said alarm provided with a lever, fusible means .on said support, a spring pressed punching device on said support, said punching device provided with means enga ing said fusible means releasably holding sai punching device against operation, said punching device provided with means engaging and normally holding said lever in a set position, said lever normally tending to release the alarm means, and said fusible means adapted to release said punching device for fracturing said fracturable portion and for releasing said lever when a fire occurs.
