My invention relates to sheet metal spools, reels, pulleys, and the like, and their manufacture. I aim to provide a strong, rugged construction and an easy, simple, and economical method of manufacture. How this ,and other advantages can be realized through the invention will appear from my description hereinafter of embodiment.

The drawings show a reel or spool comprising side or end plates 5, 5, a hub or drum G of metal tubing or bent sheet metal, and a tubular central metal sleeve 7 within the hub 6. As shown, the side plates 5, 5, have their edges fiared or curved outward somewhat, at 8, 8. The plates 5, 5, are lightened with annular rows of holes 9, 9, one row outside the hub 6, and the other inside of it. The plates 5, 5, and the hub 6 are also pierced With smaller holes 11, 11, which may be used in securing whatever is wound on the reel. The ends of the drum 6 abut against the side plates 5, 5, and may be secured to them in any suitable manner, as by spot welding or some other type of electro-welded or fused joint. As shown, there are beads of added fused metal. 13, 13 in the external corners of these joints, which fill out these corners nicely and make very strong joints.
The ends of the sleeve 7 extend out through central holes inthe side plates 5, 5, and are secured by fused joints, preferably electrowelded. As shown in Fig. II, the edge of each plate 5 around its central hole is bent or curved inward to about a 45 bevel or flare 14, so as to afford a V-shaped annular groove or recess around the protruding end of the sleeve 7. This groove is filled with added fused metal 15, interfused with both the flare 14-. and the end of the sleeve 7, and thus uniting them integrally. This embossment 17 and the added metal 15 form a central protrusion to bear against a frame or the like in which the spool may be rotatably mounted, as by means of a shaft or spindle through the sleeve 7.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
1. As an article of manufacture an all metal spool comprising oentrally apertured end plates each having the peripheral edge arched to provide an inwardly directed flare of approximately forty-five degree angularity, a concentric drum in abutment between and united to said plates by external beads of fused metal, a tubular axial sleeve having its en`ds externally reduced to provide seating shoulders for the end plate central flares with provision of exterior annular V-shaped grooves about the reduced ends, and a body of fused metal in each groove integrally uniting the sleeve ends to the anertured plates.
2. As an article of manufacture an all metal spool comprising centrally-apertured slightly-dished plates each with the peripheral edge surroundingly arched to provide an inwardly directed flare of approximately forty-five degree angularity, a concentric drum in abutment between and united to said plates by external beads of fused metal, a hub sleeve having its ends externally reduced to provide seating shoulders for the end plate central fiares ywith formation of annular V-shaped grooves about the reduced ends, annular rows of lightening holes in the aforesaid plates one row outside and the other inside of said hub, and a body of fused metal in each groove integrally uniting the sleeve ends with the apertured plates.
