printed sheets and to dry the printing thereon as they are emitted from the press.
The invention has as its prime object the provision of a heat reflector having a gas,
passage embodied in the body of the reflector structure, and also has means whereby communication is aflorded between said passage and one side of the reflector to provide heat at said side of the reflector upon ignition of the gas, the reflector being also formed to cause the flame and heat to be effectively distributed over the printed sheet to dry the printing produced upon the sheet and also thereby dissipate any static charge contained in the sheet.
The invention contemplates providing a reflector with an air chamber which will serve to insulate the reflector and assist in pre venting the dissipation of heat.
In addition, it is an object of the invention to provide a communication between said air chamber and the interior of thereflector to provide means for creating a draft, and thereby introduce air to the interior of the reflector to be mixed with any unconsumed gas in the device,and thus result in more complete combustion.
Specifically, the invention contemplates the provision of a gas passage provided in the body of the reflector, said passage having means for controlling the mixture, the passage being also provided with apertures arranged along one side thereof to allow the gas to pass from the passage and be discharged at one side of the reflector where itis ignited and spread to effectively accomplish the work of drying the ink and dissipating the electric charges. contained in the sheets.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a device having the above mentioned characteristics with a means, such as a battle, for causing the gas flame to impinge the gas passage and thereby heat the same and the gas contained therein to condition the gas for better ignition, which reduces the cost of op eration and also increases the efficiency of the device.
In addition, it is an object to provide the gas passage with means whereby the outlets from the gas passages are located near the opening of the reflector and a substantial distance from the baifle, so that the air and gas within the reflector will become properly mixed with each other for combustion and to also provide the gas passage with a venturi and a needle valve to thus gain more complete control of the flame.
The invention has these and other objects, all of which will be explained in detail and Y be more readily understood when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof.
Fig. 1 is a plan view partially in section illustrating a reflector having embodied therein features of advantage above enumerated;
Fig. Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail section of one of the gas passages of the structure shown in Figs. 1 and 2; and
Fig. l is a perspective view of one end of a supporting bar employed. i
The construction illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3 contemplates the use of the reflector generally designated 10,the body of which, in the present instance, is a casting which is formed to produce the top wall 11, the side walls 12 and 13, and the end walls 14: and 15.
The structure shown contemplates the provision of a reflector having an air chamber 42. which will insulate the reflector against the dissipation of heat The chamber 42 also provides part of a means for creating a draft to draw air into the deflector so that a supply of fresh air may be introduced to the combustion chamber to be mixed with any unconsumed gas in said chamber and result in more complete combustion.
To this end, apertures 43 are employed, which form a communication between the air chamber 42 and the combustion chamber of the reflector and will thusprovide an air inlet, which will supply fresh air to the combustion chamber.
The structure illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 2 is a section taken on line 22 of contemplates the provision of a plurality of separately controlled gas passages 4H5, and in addition the reflecting surfaces 46 l7 and 48, one of which, such as l7, is located between said gas or fluid passages 44 and 45, which thus produces an arrangement whereby the intermcdiae reflecting surface l? may be served by either or both gas passages and thereby provide an arrangement whereby one gas passage may serve the intermediate and one of the outer reflecting surfaces and thus provide means which will eliminate the necessity of using both burners when arelatively smaller element is to be dried.
The gas passages l4 and 4:5 are fed through the pipe connectors, generally designated 50, and each gas passa 'e is provided with a needle valve 51, so that the gas supply may be more etliciently regulated, and is further provided with the regulator 5 The passirsai i no .arts
are "0 also nclud the tubula a t 5') which project into the casing of the regula-.
tor, and these are each provided with a reduced opening 51. The gas passages i i and 45 are formed adjacent the regulators 52 with a reduced part 58, which provides a venturi. In the structure illustrated in Fig. 1, the gas passage extends clouniwardly into the combustion chamber and the lower side of the passage is provided with a plurality of teats 54, each having gas passages 55. The teats extend to near the lower portion of the combustion chamber, with the baffle plate 53 located in spaced relation to the termination of said teats, the battle being secured to and supported by bosses 57. This construction facilitates proper mixture of gas and air within the deflector chamber.
Provision is made "for adjusting the reflector horizontally and also vertically so to arrange the reflector in prop-er relation to the sheet to be dried. To this end, supports 58 and 59 are employed, the ends or" which are arranged in slots 606l provided in brackets 62 and 63, whereby the reflector is mounted with respect to the press. These rods are held endwise an d rotatable movement by means of set screws G l, the device including said bar being helc re aj ie brackets by means or" the nuts 65. The extremities of said bars are formed 66 to provide eccentric, which eccenalc is arranged in tl e slots 60-61 provided in said brackets 62 and 63.
It is manifest that by releasing the screws 6%, that the deflector may then be at just-ed horizontally relatively to the brackets, and by releasing the set screws (Set and rotating said bars, the eccentrics provided upon the ends of the bars permit and accom plish vertical adjustment or" the reflector.
From the forego description, it is manitest that by casting or otherwise forming the deflector in one piece with the gas passage and constructing one end of the passage to provide a mixer and also forming this end of the passage so as to produce valve and to also provide for the attachment of a gas connection, and to employ one wall of the reilector as a wall of the passage with a ballle a ranged adjacent said wall in the manner above described, a deflector is produced which is extremely simple in construction, and which is of a unitary character which materially assists in reducing the manufacturing cost of articles of this character.
It is further evident that by constructing the deflector with a plurality of reflecting surfaces and a plurality of burners, with the burners located between one edge of the de tlector and the center thereof, that the center portion may be served by either or both burners, and thus result in the proper distribution of heat upon the ignition oi gas from either burner.
It is also manifest that by providing a passage or connection between the air cham bar and the interior of the combustion chamber of the deflector that fresh air is caused to circulate through the combustion chamber for mixture with any unconsumed gas in the combustion chamber, and. result in more complete ignition of the gas introduced to said combustion chamber.
it is also manifest that by employing a Venturi tube in the gas passage of the deflector, t ie velocity of the gas is increased.
.l-laving thus described the invention, What I claim is new and desire to cover by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a member providing a deflector, a plurality of gas passages provided in a wall of said member, the underside of said member being provided with a plurality of reflecting surfaces, one of said reflecting surfaces being located between said passages whereby said surface may co-operate with both passages.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a member providing a deflector, a plurality of gas passages provided in said member, the underside of said member being provided with a plurality of reflecting surfaces, one of said reflecting surfaces be ing located between. said passages whereby said surface may coopera e with either passage to deflect heat produced upon the ignition of the gas fed from either passage, and an air chamber provided in said deflector.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this 18th day of February, A. D.
i-RTHUR J. DAANE.
