It is the object of this invention to produce an abrasive reamer that shall be partlcularly adapted for use in reaming small holes such as wrist pin holes in cylinders andr the like and which shall be so constructed that it can be readily adjusted to fit holes vofdiverent sizes within reasonable limits.
Another object of this invention is to produce a reamer of such construction that it will have its parts biased to minimum diameter position by means of a spring and which shall also be provided with a sleeve that is rotatably and longitudinally movable and by means of which theparts can be moved towards maximum diameter position, while the reamer is rotating.
It is a further object of this invention to produce a reamer in which the abrasive is secured in place in such a way that its front edge will not be injured when the reamer 1s introduced into the opening and which will also hold the abrasive against longitudinal movement when thework is withdrawn from the reamer.
The above and other objects that may become apparent as this description proceeds are -attained by means of a construction and an arrangement of parts that will now be described in detail, and reference for this purpose will .now be had to the accompanying drawings in which the preferred embodiment of the invention has been illustrated, and in y which Fig. 1 is a view of my improved reamer, parts of which has been shown in section and parts in elevation;

In the drawings reference numeral 1 designates the body portion of the device and .which in the embodiment illustrated is formed from a rectangular steel bar having a central portion 2 provided with oppositely tapering sides 3. A driving shank 3a is connected with one end of the body portionby means of a universal connection comprising a ysleeve 4 that has been shown as secured to the end of the body portion nearest the widest portion of the tapered part.` This sleeve may be integral with the body portion, welded thereto or secured to it by means of a pin 5, as shown in the drawings. The inner end of the driving shank is provided with two diametrically opposite openings 6 that are connected at their lower ends by an opening 7 of smaller diameter. A pin 8 extends through openings 6 and 7 and through openings in sleeve 4. The driving shank is of smaller diameter than the opening in sleeve 4 and therefore it has universal movement with respect to the body member 1.
Secured to the tapered portion 2 are two cylindrical members 9 that have their adjacentsurfaces provided with grooves 10 thatv members 9 are moved longitudinally on the' tapered portion of the body member, the outer surfaces will'always remain parallel but the two parts will move towards and away from each other depending on the direction in which they are moved with respect to the tapered portion to which they are secured. A spring 11 surrounds member 1 between the sleeve 4 and a cup 12 that is slidably connected with the body member. The open end of cup 12 is inwardly tapered as indicated by reference numeral 13 and this tapered portion engages vthe tapered surfaces 14 of members 9. vExtending from the narrow end of the tapered portion is a cylin- F ig. 7 is a section taken on line 7-7,Fig. 1. v
drical section 15 that is threaded. A cup 16 is slidably connected with part 15 and the latter is provided with a longitudinally extending groove 17 that is engaged by a projection 18 carried by the cup 16. This projection prevents relative movement of the cup and bar. The open end of cup 16 is tapered so as to engage the tapered portions 14. of members 9. A sleeve 20 is provided with an axial opening comprising two sections of diderent diameters, section 21 being somewhat larger in diameter than the diameter of part 15 and section 22 beingof larger diameter than section 21. This sleeve is secured to section 15 by means of a screw 23 that has athreaded axial opening 24, which engages the threads on member 15. The head 25 oii screw 23 is substantially the same diameter as the inside of section 22 and is adapted to form a stop that prevents the sleeve from being withdrawn. When the sleeve is in its voutermost position, as shown in Fig. 1, the shoulder 26 between sections 21 and 22 engages the shoulder formed by the head 25 of the screw and holds parts 9 in the minimum diameter osition, the parts being biased to this position by means of the spring 11. When sleeve 20 is moved inwardly it moves the parts 9 towards the wider end of the tapered portion in the manner indicated in Fig. 2 and thereby separates them so as to increase the distances between their outer surfaces. For the urpose of limiting the outer movement o the abrasive members, a stop has been provided. This stop consists of a threaded plug or screw 27 that is threadedly connected with the opening in sleeve20. A lock nut 28 serves to hold plug 27 in adjusted position.
By loosening the lock vmit and turning the screw 27 inwardly or outwardly, the extent to which sleeve 20 can be moved, is determined. Since the sleeve 20`is rotatably connected with the reamer and is also longitudinally movable, it can be grasped by the ofperator when the\reamer is rotating and the latter can therefore be expanded, while turning at a high speed. -As soon as pressure is released from sleeve 20, the spring 11 will move the parts towards the position shown in Fig. 1, which is the minimum diameter position.
When the device is to be used the driving shank is secured in a lathe or other suitable apparatus by means of which the reamer is rotated. A piston or other article having an opening which is to be reamed to a predetermined diameter, is slipped over the abrading members, after which the operator grasping sleeve 20 moves the parts towards the position shown in Fig. 2, thereby moving the abrasive surfaces against the sides of the opening. When reamers of this type are employed, it is nearly always necessary to employ the t and try method, as
it is impossible to redetermine the exact diameter of the opening due to the fact that Y the abrasive wears away and it is' therefore necessary -to test the opening from time toy be inadvertently made too large and this is of great value in practical operation as it assures that the parts being Worked upon will not be ruined, due to inadvertence. y
When the reamer is adjusted in the mann shown in my copendin'g application above identiiied, it must be stopped and manually adjusted so as to decrease its diameter before the work can beeremoved and it is often necessary to insert the reamer in the opening and then expand it before it is started to operate and this makes the operation slow. With my improved construction, the parts are biased to minimum diameter position, by means of the spring 11 and therefore as' soon as sleeve 20 is released, the diameter of the reamer will automatically decrease so that the work can be readily removed. rlhe work can also be put in place with the parts shown in position in Fig. 1 and after the part to be reamed has been put into position, the operator by moving lsleeve 20 inwardly expands the rea-mer so as to make the abrasive surfaces contact with the .side of the opening.
lIn my copending application the abrasive members are constructed in the same manner as those employed in this device and each of these members consists of an abrasive 29 which may be of paper and cloth and to which carborundum or any other suitable abrasive is secured by cement or other means. rlhe edges of this abrasive member are provided with sheet metal mounting strips 30 that are bent into U-shape and clamped to the edges of the abrasive. Members 9jare rovided with grooves 31 for the reception o the reenforced edges 30 and the abrasive can therefore be applied t or removed from members 9 by a longitudinal movement, in a manner quite apparent from the drawings. Since the work is applied to and removed from the reamer by slipping it over the free end of this tool, it is evident that unless the outer edges of the abrasive are protected, they are liable to be damaged bythe workwhen the latter is put in place, and for the purpose of protecting the outer edges of the abrasives, members 9 have been provided near their outer ends with grooves 32 into which the edges of the abrasives can be crimped in the manner shown most clearly in Fig. 5. The part indicated" by reference numeral 33 that forms the outer wall oi the fi in place and have their edges crimped in the 7 I' ably connected. to the device groove as shown in Fig. 5, they are rotected against injury and will also be hel against accidental movement longitudinally, and this has been found to be of great importance in operating a tool of this type.
From the above description it will be apparent that I have produced an abrasive reamer of a. simple and substantial construction that can be very conveniently operated and which is provided with means for expanding and contracting the reamer while it is rotating, and therefore it is possible to keep the reamer continuously rotating while work is applied and moved from it. Another important feature to whichattention has already been called is a means for protecting thel outer edges of the abrasives and for holding them against accidentallongitudinal movement.
Having described my invention what is claimed as new is:
l. In a device of theA character described, the combination with a two-part adjustable cylindrical body portion of means carried intermediate of said parts for expanding or contracting same to various predetermined diametrical sizes, the parts being biased towards minimum diameter position by means of a spring, means comprising a sleeve slidor moving the parts against the spring and towards maximum dlameter position, andan adjustable stop for limiting the movement of the sleeve in adirection to increase the diameter.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a. two-part adjustable cylindrical body portion of, means comprising a tapered bar located intermediate of said parts for expanding or contracting same 'to various diametricalsizes, the cylindrical body portions having their adjacent sides provided with grooves having the same taper as the tapered portion of the bar, means associated with the cylindrical body portions for yieldingly holding them against the bar, the cylindrical-body portions being biased towards minimum diameter position by means of a spring, a sleeve slidably and rotatably secured to the bar and adapted to move the cylindrical body portions towards maximum diameter and an adjustable stop for limiting the movement of the sleeve in a direction to increase the diameter.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a two-part adjustable cylindricalbody portion of means comprising a tapered bar located intermediate of said parts, for expanding or contracting same to various diametrical sizes, the cylindrical body portions having their adjacent sides provided with grooves having the same taper as the tapered portion of the bar, means associatedwvith` the cylindrical body portions for yieldingly holding them against the bar, the cylindrlcal body portions being biased to- 4. in combination, a body member having a tapered portion intermediate its ends, a plurality of cylindrical body portions carried thereby, each of said cylindrical portions having one side provided with a groove whose taper is the same as the taper of the first mentioned member the narrow end of the tapered body portion terminating in a cylindrical portion, a cup-shaped member slidably attached to the cylindrical portion, a sleeve slidably and nonrotatably attached to the cylindrical portion, means yfor limiting the outward movement of the'sleeve, an adjustable stop for limiting the inward movement of the sleeve, a cup-shaped member slidably connected with the other end of the body member and a spring engaging the last named cup-shaped member for biasing it towards the tapered portion. 4
5. In a device of the character described, in combinatiomua two-part adjustable cylindrical body portion, a single adjusting membe'r intermediate said parts, means slidably connected with the ends `of the adjusting member for securing the cylindrical body other, the cylindrical body members being v biased to minimum diameter position by means of a spring, means comprising a sleeve slidably and rotatably secured to the adjusting member for moving the cylindrical members towards maximum diameter position .against the spring bias and means for limitin the movement of the sleeve in both directions.` v
6. In a device ofthe character described, in combination, a central body with tapered faces and having an abrasive-supporting, bevel-ended shoe itting upon each tapered face, two cups on said body in contact with the ends of the shoes, a spring support on one end of said body adjacent one of said cups, a spring between said support and the adj acentcup, the other end of said body having a screw threadedly secured to its outer end, the head of the screw being of greater diameter than the body whereby a shoulder is formed, a sleeve having an axial opening of different diameters, the two cylindrical' inner surfaces being joined by a shoulder which is adapted to engage the head of the screw whereby the outward movement of the sleeve will-be prevented, the opening in the outer end of the sleeve being threaded and a plug threaded into the opening, the inner end of the plug-engaging the head of the screw to 1imit the inward movement of the sleeve.
7. A member for holding an abrasive for use in an abrasive reanier, said member having one side substantially semi-cylindrical and the other side provided with means for securing it to a body member and means for securing an abrasive covering to the semieylindrical surface, one end of the semi-Cylindrical surface having a groove for the reception of the edge of the abrasive covering for protecting the same.
