O. DEPPMEYER POCKET KNIFE Filed Dec. 26, 1930 O 1 0 D eppmeyer INVENTOR i ATT'ORNEY;
Patented Jan. 12, 1932 UNITED S ATES o'r'ro DEPPMEYER, or urroannw YORK rocxErxNrra-L Application filed December 26,,193b. Serial Nb. 504,879. I it This invention relates to improvements in pocket knives and has for the primary object, the provision of anovel handle which will materially reduce the cost of manufac @ture of the device over similar devices and whlch wlll be durable and efiiclent.
Another object of this invent-ion is the A further object of this invention is the twisting of the wire intermediate the ends of the handle that finger notches are provided whereby the blade may be easily gripped for swinging the latter into active or operative position and further forms a stop for the inward movement of the blade relative to the handle and also aids in permitting a person to obtain a firm grip on the handle.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and'claimed. V
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which I Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating a pocket knife constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is an edge elevation illustrating the same.
Figure 3 is a similar View to Figure 2 showing the opposite edge of the knife.
Figure 4 is a side elevation with the blade collapsed or folded into the handle.
Figure 5 is a sectional View taken on the line 55 of Figure l.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the
numeral 1 indicates a'knife blade of a conven-' tional type having the usual rounded or cam shaped end 2 provided with a shoulder 3 adjacent thereto for engagement with the end of the handle when the blade is in an active 1y bowed-or spaced as shownat 7 toform a or v operative ,position. I The foregoingjdie SCIIPlDIOIIIGlZItGS to a well known construe tion of. blade to which my nventlon'ls ap plied. Thehandlet is' constructed froina single length of heavy gage wirebentlinterg mediateits endsto form parallel portions and WhIC h provide the back to the: handle.
The'para llel portions 5 interl nediate' theirends are bent to'form offsets 6 and are slight-3 stop for limiting the movement of the blade linto the handle 4'. l.he;wire after forming the back portion 5 is bent'angularly to pro. vide an end portion 8 and then bent parallel.
and in'spaced relation to the portionsfi in forming sides or shields 9 for the blade' l when in collapsed or f olded position. The wire after forming the sides 9 is bent in over lapping relation and extended through the offsetjportions 6. The ends of the Wire after forming the side portions 9 and when extended through the offsets 6 0f the portionfi are crossedand then'bent to provide spaced arms 10 extending substantially parallel with the portions 5 or the lfack of the handle and have the blade 1 pivoted thereto.
The ai m's 10 also complete thesidesior shields for thefknifefl'iladeJ The end 11 of p the portion 5 rides" upon the curved end 2 of the blade and when the latter is in extended posit-ion engages the shoulder '33 to I limitthe movementof the blade beyond an extended or active position .or to prevent collapsing of the blade'when in the act of cutting. It will be noted that the wire when. bent to extend through the offsets 6 provides finger notches 12 for the sides ofthe handle whereby the blade may be easily gripped when desiring to swing the latter upwardly of the handle. The portions of the wire forming the sides of the handle are slightly spaced to permit the blade to move freely into and out of the handle. i
Ahandle constructed in accordance with" the foregoing may be manufactured at a very low cost and will form a veryvefiicient handle capable of withstanding abuse and a 7 hard usage and will form a blade shield for the blade when the latter is in an inactive or inoperative position. The handle further.
permits a person to easily obtain a firm grip thereon when using the blade for cutting purposes. While I have shown and described the pre- 6 fer-red form of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made, Without departing from'the spirit and scopeas claimed,
V Having thus described my inventiom what" I claim 1s:- 7 V, I p o 1. A knife comprising a handle constructed r'rom a single length of material bent in-Li termediate its ends to provide parallel por- 15 tions defining the back of the handle; thematerial, after forming the parallel portions extendingangularly thereto to provide an end portion and then bent parallel and in spaced relation to the backof the handle to provide a.blade. shield, fthe ends of the materialex- V 1 tending from the shield providing arms, and
ablade'pivoted to. the arms and receivable ,by the shield, the material of the parallel portions ofthe back bent to form offsets and 25-5botved to provide a stop for limiting the movement of theblade intothe shield.
2. A knife comprising a handle constructed from a single lengthof material bent intermediate it-s ends to prov'ide parallel portions defining the back of the handle, the material after forming, the. parallel portions extending angularly thereto to provide an end portion and thenbent parallel and'in, spaced relation to the back of the handle to provide- 35; a blade shield, the ends of the material ex tendingfrom the shield providing arms, and a blade pivoted to the arms and receivable by the shield, the material ofthe parallel p01? tions of the back bent to form offsets and 4e bowed to'provide' a stop for limiting the movement of the blade into the shield, the material of the shieldand arms bentabout theofi'sets to provide finger spaces for permittingthe blade to be gripped for moving 4; the latter outwardly of the shield.
In testimony whereof I aifi'x my signature.
OTTO DEPPMEYER.
