BILLANCOURT, SEINE, FRANCE ELECTRIC HOLDER Application led November 15, 1928, Serial No. 319,546, and in France January 5, 1928.
The invention relates to improvements in electrode holders, and more particularly to holders used for electric welding by means of three-phase currents with electrodes of the sandwich type.
The improvements according to the invention consist on the one hand in arranging the handle and the insulated part of the apparatus at the back ofv a protective shield, and on lo the other hand in providing a readily adjustable clamping device for the electrodes. This improved holder makes it possible to avoid the inconveniences met with in holders at present used, wherein the insulators are 5.', located at the frontpart near the electrode, owing to which these devices last only for a limited time. Further in such known holders the clamping devices, which comprise jointed levers near the handle, nesessitate a continuous pressure being exerted by the operator on the handle and levers in order to keep the electrode in the holder.

Figure 2 is a fragmentary end view there- :1o On referring to the accompanying drawings it will be seen that the apparatus according to the invention comprises two conductors 1 and 2 for bringing current to the electrode, which are enclosed in mica tubes 513 1 and 2 and' then in any heat insulating substance 3, and are buried in a suitable material inside a tube of liber-board, or the like 4, constituting the handle. This tube may advantageously be wrapped with a winding of -f string, or the like, so as to facilitate the operators grip of the apparatus.
The conductors end at the front of the apparatus in two blocks 5, 5 in which rotate two axles 6 attached to knurled eccentrics 7.
'1 These eccentrics can be operated by means of a tommy-bar passed through eyes 8 in the lugs 9.
` Stops 10 are arranged behind on the blocks 5. The electrode 11 of the sandwich type 39 comprises two ends 12, 12 intended to make contact with the conductors bringing the current. AThese ends are placed in the gap between the stops 10 and the eccentrics 7.
By operating these latter each part of the electrode will be rmly gripped, without any deformation, such as may occur with some types of known holders.
It is to be understood that, without exceeding the scope of the invention, t-he two eccentrics might be operated by a single member, but individual clamping of each arm ensures better contact.
The apparatus is completed by a shield 15 comprising an air circulation 14 for protecting the operators hand.
Claims:
1. A holder for welding electrodes comprising, a tubular handle member, a plurality of electrode supporting conductors extending through said handle, means in said handle for insulating and spacing said electrode supporting conductors, welding electrode clamping means on each of said conductors at one end beyond said handle, and a shield mounted at one end of the handle spaced from said electrode supporting conductors and the electrode clamping means thereon.
2. A holder for welding electrodes comprising, a tubular handle member, a plurality of electrode supporting conductors extending through said handle, insulatingr material in said handle for insulating and spacing said electrode supporting conductors, welding electrode clamping` means on each of said conductors at one end beyond said handle, and a shieldl comprising two spaced walls to permit circulation of air therebetween mounted at an end of the handle spaced from said electrode supporting conductors and the elect-rode clamping means thereon.
