This invention relates to improvements in strainers, and is especially adapted for use in straining liquid fuel, such as fuel oil in its passage from the source of supply to the t' source of consumption.
The primary object of the invention residesl in a strainer vdevice which may be arranged in the pipe line leading from an oil supply tank lto the oil burner of an oil burning furw nace or the like, for thoroughly ltering the oil in its passage thereto to remove fine particles of residue therefrom and which strainer may be cleaned when desired to remove any .accumulated residue, but which cleaning of w the strainer cannot be effected unless the oil line between the supply tank and the burner is fully shut off. This constitutes a safety feature wherein all possibility of the strainer being opened to clean the same when the flow of oil is passing therethrough is ellminated, which prevents the loss of oil, damage to surrounding property, and the consequent reduction of re hazards.
Another object of the invention is to, provide a strainer device which includes a valve whereby the flow of oil from the source of supply to the burner may be shut off when desired, thus making it unnecessary to install a separate control valve in the fuel supply line. t v
Another object is the provision of a strainer device which is simple of construction, easy to assemble and dsassemble, and which will meet the strict requirements of the authorities having jurisdiction over the installation and use of fuel burning systems.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the certain novel conan struction, combination and arrangement of parts, the essential features of which are hereinafter fully described, are particularly pointed out in the appended claims, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in

Referring to the drawings by reference y characters, the numeral 10 designates my improved strainer device in its entirety,which includes a cup-like receptacle or casing 11, which is cylindrical in plan, and open at its top, the open top end being provided with an inwardly extending annular flange 12, which is provided with diametrically opposed slots 50 13 for a purpose to be presently explained. Fitting against the open top of the casing 11 is a cover 14 of annular configuration in plan, and which is provided with bolt openings for register with similar openings in the flange 12 for the reception of bolts o rlike fastening elements 16. The bolts 16 are freely slidable through the bolt openings in the cover 14 but thread into threaded sockets provided in the top of the casing 11. A pin 43 is fixedly 70 carried by the top of the casing 11 and is receivable in a socket or recess provided in the underside of the cover 14 and which prevents accidental turning of the casing with respect to the cover when the bolts 16 are removed 76 for a purpose to be hereinafter explained.
Rising from the cover 14 and integral therewith is a boss 17 which extends across the cover and which is provided with diametrically opposed passages 18 and 19, the 30 passage 18 constituting an inlet passage, while the passage 19 constitutes an outlet passage. Journaled for turning movement in the cover 14 and extending into the casing 11 is a stem or shaft 22, the inner free end of which is screw threaded as at 23, while the out-er end which extends above the boss .17 carries a manipulating head 24, the under side of which is provided with a step-in flange or collar 25 which seats in a recess 26 provided 100 on the top of the box 17. The walls ofthe recess 26 are cut away to provide stop shoulders 27 for engagement by a pin 28 carrieddisc 29 having a Hat face which engages the underside of the cover 14.v The upper face of the valve disc 29 is provided with a recess 30 for the reception of a key pin 31 carried by.
the stem 22, and which pin tends to key the valve member 29 to the stem or shaft so as to be capable of rotation therewith. Extending vertically through the valve disc member 29 is an outlet port 33 which registers with the outlet passage 19, while an angular shaped inlet port 32 formed in the valve disc diametrically opposite the inlet port 33 is adapted to register with the inlet passage 18. Tith reference to Figure 2 of the drawin it will be seen that when one end of the inlet port 32 is in register with the passage 18, the opposite end opens through the side of the valve member 29, for a reason presently to be explained. Carried by the turnable stem 22 is a strainer element 34, which is disposed within the casing or receptacle 11 in spaced relation with respect to the inner side wall and bottom thereof.
The strainer element 34 comprises a frame structure 35 which is closed at its lbottom in which is provided a threaded opening 36 for threading engagement with the threaded end 23 of the stem. Coverinr the open sides of the frame structure 35 is a lie mesh screen 37 of cylindrical configuration, while the top of the frame is provided with a flanged annular ring 38 for seating engagement with an annular seat 39 provided in the underside of the disc valve member 29. When applying 4the strainer member 34 to the stem, the same is threaded thereon until the flanged ring 38 tightly seats against the annua-l seat 39 provided on the underside of the valve dise. Also threaded on the threaded end 23 of the stem is a stop collar 40 and interposed between the inner face of the collar and the underside of the valve disc 2 9 is an expansion spring 41, the tension from which tends to maintain the valve disc member 29 tight against the under side of the cover 14, so as to prevent any leakage through the joint which mi ht occur due to wear between the meeting aces. The said spring further serves to maintain the flange 25 on the manipulating head 24 in seated position within the recess 26 provided therefor. By turning the stop collar 40, the tension of the spring 41 may be varied according to the amount of tension necessary to securely hold the several parts in proper position. t
Extending outwardly from the side of the valve disc member 29 at diametrically opposite points, are pins 42 of a size to freely pass through the slots 13 in the flange 12 of the receptacle 11. These pins 42 are so disposed with respect to the ports 32 and 33 provided in the valve disc that the said pins may only pass through the slots 13 when the valve disc member is in closed position, or when the ports 32 and 33 are out of register with the respective passages 18 and 19. By this arrangement, the removable casing or receptacle 11 cannot be separated from the cover 14 when the valve is in an open position, as it is necessary to rotate the valve disc 29 to a position to shut off the flow of liquid before the pins 42 may be brought into register with the slots 13 to enable the casing or receptacle to be separated from the cover 14.
In practice, assume that the valve disc member 29 is in open position as shown in Figure 2 of the drawings at 'which time liquid oil may pass from the supply pipe 2O to the inlet port 18 thence through the inlet 32 and into the receptacle or casing 11. From the casing the oil passes through the mesh' and into the strainer 34, and from there out through the outlet pipe 21 through the registering outlet port 33 and outlet passage 19. In the passage of the oil through the casing 11, any residue or foreign matter is trapped therein, and when sufficient residue accumulates within the casing to warrant emptying the same, the valve stem 22 is turned by grasping the manipulating knob 24 so as to cause the ports 32 and 33 to move out of registration with the respective passages 18 and 19, and at which time the flow of oil is shut off. With the valve in this position, the casing or receptacle 11 may be removed by first removing the fastening elements 16 after which the receptacle may be separated from the cover 14. With the receptacle removed, the same may be emptied of the accumulated residue, after which it may be replaced and the valve again turned on to permit the free flow of oil through the device and the straining of the same in its passage therethrough. By this arrangement, it is absolutely necessary that the oil supply line be shut off before it is possible to disconnect the Several parts which facilitates the removal of the strainer element for emptying purposes. This prevents the accidental removal of the casing 11 in the event that the valve was open, which would permit oil to escape and cause damage to surrounding properties as well as setting up a fire hazard. It is usually customary in oil supply pipes to provide a cut off valve, but my improved strainer dcvice embodies such a valve which would dispense with the necessity of installing a separate valve for emergency purposes.
Should the wire mesh of the strainer device become clogged with residue, the same may be: unscrewed from the stem 22 and open at its top, a removable having inlet and outlet passages openil1"g1 onto the bottom of said cover, a headed stein'- thoroughly cleaned, or if worn, it may be replaced by a new one.
While I have shown and described Ywhat I deem to be the most desirable embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that various changesin construction may be resorted to if desired, and I do not wish to limit myself to the precise structural details herein shown and described, nor to anything less than the whole of my invention limited only by the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is z- 1. 'A strainer device comprising a casing, open at its top, a removable cover therefor having inlet and outlet passages opening onto lthe bottom of said cover, a `headed stem journaled in said cover with one end extending into said casing, a valve disc keyed to said stem having inlet and outlet ports therein for respective registration with said inlet and outlet passages, said valve disc flatly engaging under side of said cover, and a wire mesh strainer member supported by said stem and engaging the said valve disc v g valve disc, and an inwardly extending. flange on said casing having diametrically opposed flatly engaging the under side of said cover,
a strainer member threaded to said stem and seated against the under side of said valve disc, a collar threaded to said stem,
and an expansion spring interposed between said collar and the underside of said valve disc to hold the same against the under side of said cover and the headed end of said stem against the top of said cover.
