Description

C. W HO VIS.
IMPLEMENTS FOR LOADING FIRE-ARMS.
Patented Nov. 7. 1876.

THE GRAPHIC ClI-N-Y UNITED S'rarns CHARLES W. HOVIS, OF PARKER CITY, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND W. J. HOVIS, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN IMPLEMENTS FQR LOADING FIRE-ARMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 184,079; dated November 7, 1876; application filed April 18, 1876.
1'0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. Hovrs, of Parker City, Armstrong county, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Revolving Gun-Loader, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of a revolving case containing chambers suitable for holding a charge in each on'e'for the gun to be loaded, working between two plates, which close the chambers at the ends, except at one place, where there is a chamber to receive the muzzle of the gun to be loaded, and a hole through each plate coinciding with it, so that the load can be pushed out of the loader into the gun when the muzzle ot the latter is in said chamber, and under each chamber is a valve to retain the load till ready t'ordischarge.
Figure l is a top view of our improved loader with the top plate removed, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
A represents the chamber of the revolving case to contain the charges; B, the bottom, and O the top, plate; and D the chambered extension of the loader for fitting on the muzzle of the gun to be loaded, the chamber being indicated in it by the dotted lines a. E
represents the covering-plates for the chambers. They are fitted on a pivot, F, below the chambers, so as to swing under and: close them, or out and open them, for discharging the charge into the gun. 'They are swung out by a spring-pawl, G, which catches in a notch, H, when the chambers swing over the hole opening into the muzzle of the gun, so'that said chambers are ready to have the charge pushed into the gun as soon as they come to rest. The s1 )ring-catch is pulled out when the chambers are to be moved again to release the covering-plates, which are pushed in again by the wall I, when the chambers are moved along. These covering-plates also serve to prevent the charges from falling through at the hole for pushing them into the barrel when the charger is being filled, the spring being at that time held out of contact with them.
Having thus described my in vention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent.
The combination, with case having top and bottom B (J, revolving chambers A, and chambered extension D, of the pivoted notched coverii'lg-plates E and spring-pawl G, arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
CHARLES W. HOVIS.
