Description
Jan. 12, 1932. R. STRESAU FEED MILLING APPARATUS Filed May 15, 1929 Patented Jan. 12, 1932 UNITE STATES PATE'FN' m RICHARD STRESAU, OF WAUW ATOSA, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR 'IO SWIFTON MANUFAC- TUBING COMPANY, OF WEST ALLIS, WISCONSIN, A'CORIPORATION OF WISCONSIN FEED-MILLING Arr-Asians Application filed May 15,
The invention relates to a feed mill for cutting fodder, grinding grain or other similar purposes.
The object of the invention is to provide a feed mill having a unitary housing with provision for removing the cutter shaft from one side of the machine to permit ready removal of the cutter or beater from the housing, the present construction embodying certain modifications in the cutter or beater assembly for accomplishing this purpose over that of my copending application, Serial No. 844,018, filed Mar. 2, 1929. y
Theinvention further consists in the several features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.
In the drawings Fig. 1 is avertical sectional View through a feed mill embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig.8 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, the casing 5 is formed as a unitary structure having side plates 6, upper cover plate 7, front plate 8 and lower rear plate 9, the plates 7, 8 and 9 preferably being welded to the side plates 6 and the plates 8 and 9 being welded to a channel frame member 10 which, with the lower ends of the side plates 6, is welded to metal skids or runners 11, one on each side, having tubular tie-bars 12 welded thereto. This casing is provided with a front opening 13 and a rear opening 14. The opening 14 is normally covered by a removable door 15 which is formed of plates'16, angles 17 and tubes 18. The lower'end of said cover fits in a recess 19 provided in a bar 20 welded or otherwise suitably secured to the upper end of the plate 9, whilethe upper end of the cover rests against the lower end of the cover plate 7 and is held thereagainst by suitable fastening means. tween the side plates 6. The fastening means may comprise bolts or pins 21 mounted in the tubes and engageable in apertured lugs 22 secured to the side plates 6. The term unitary casing is used todistinguish thisconstruc- The cover fits snugly be- 7 1929. Serial no. 363,275. v tion from the usualsplit casings and is not to be limited'to a casmg-whoseparts are secured together by welding.
Any suitable conveyor, such as the endless belt 23 running over the rollers 24 and'25, 5
the roller 24 being a driven roller,maybe used to feed the material into the machine past the revolving cutter .25 whose construction. and assembly on its shaft 26 is similar to that of the cutter or beater 27 associated with the screen 28 and shown in detail in Fig. 2.
Referring to Fig. 2, the cutter or heater 27 is formed of a plurality of beater, hammer or cutter members 29 and. spacing washers 30 that are mounted on a tubular'shaft: 31 and 5 clamped thereon and together by spanner nuts 32 mounted-on the threaded ends 33 of said shaft. A washer at each end of the shaft isprovided with acounterweightportion 34 sothat afterthemachine is assembled these washers may be angularly adjusted relative to the shaft to properly counterbalance the same. 1 I
The sleeve or shaftiil has spacedkeys'35 '7 inset thereinvand Welded thereto and engage- 7' 1 able in aa-longitudinally extending key-way. 3,6 in the drive shaft37 which, as hereinafter explained, is removable endwise from the housing 5 so that the beater 27 may be slipped off of said shaft and removed through the so opening 14. When assembled'the heater or cutter. assembly is held against longitudinal movement relative to the shaft 37'by'set- 1 screws 38. r
,The shaft S'Zlhas a reduced end portion 39 S5 slidably mounted in a sleeve 40 which in turn 1s secured to the inner race of a ballbearing journal41 whoseouter race is mounted and held within abearing block 42secured to one of the si'de plates The outer end of the 90 part 39 has a suction fan 43, disposed in a casing 43, secured vthereto by a key-lock washer 44 and nut 45 and its hub 46 fits over a portion of the sleeve 40. i
The rear end portion 47 of the shaft37 is 95 journalled in a ball-bearing journal 48 those inner race'is secured to said shaft between a shoulder thereon and thehub of a gear 49 associatedwith other parts of the machine and whose outer race is mounted within a bearing support 50 between a flange 51 and a removable collar 52. The bearing support is detachably secured to the adjacent side plate 6 so as to be removable with said shaft and the bearings 48 by means of suitable studs 53 secured to said side plate 6 and nuts 54. The shaft carries a drive pulley 37. With this construction, taking off the nuts 54 and the nut 45 and fan 43 and loosening the setscrews 88 permits the shaft 37 to be removed endwise from the housing and through the shaft 31, whereby the beater may then be taken out through the opening 14.
The same general arrangement is carried out in connection with the assembly of the cutter 25, whose drive shaft 26 is removable endwise from the housing similar to the shaft 37 and has a slidably keyed connection with a tubular shaft 55 upon which the cutter blades 56 are spaced, mounted and secured in the same manner as the beater blades or cutter blades 29.
Further details of construction of the ma chine are not deemed necessary as the invention here involved is confined to the combination with a unitary casing of a cutter or beater assembly of the character above described.
I desire it to be understood that this invention is not to be limited to any particular arrangement or construction of parts except as such limitations are specified in the claims.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a feed mill, the combination of a housing, .a drive shaft mounted in said housing, a feed reducing device including a tubular shaft, feed reducing blades associated with said tubular shaft, and adjustable counterweights mounted on said tubular shaft.
2. in a feed mill, the combination of a housing, a drive shaft mounted in said housing and removable endwise therefrom and provided with a key-way, a tubular shaft fitting over said drive shaft and provided with a key engaging in said key-way and with threaded ends, feed reducing blades fitting over said tubular shaft, spacing members fitting over said tubular shaft and interposed between said blades, some of said members provided with balancinglugs, and nuts engaging the threaded ends of said tubular shaft for clamping said blades and spacing members in assembled relation.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature.-
RIOHARD STRESAU.
