My invention relates to the frame structure for typewriting machines and more particularly for portable typewriting machines, and to the mounting and relative arrangement of working parts of the machine on said frame structure.
The main object of my invention, generally stated, is to provide a light, rigid frame structure that is simple in construction, constitutes 19 a. firm support for the working parts of the machine, enables the working parts to be readily mounted in place therein in a compact organization and in proper correlation, and the parts of which frame structure may be readily and firmly united and aids materially in presenting a neat and finished appearance to the completed machine.
To the above and other ends which will hereinafter appear, my invention consists 90 in the features of construction, and arrangement of parts set forth in the'following description and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

I have shown my invention embodied, in the present instance, in a noiseless, portable typewriting machine of the character disclosed in my application Serial #331,534,

The machine frame of the present invention is designed to form a support for various working parts of the machine including the type actions disclosed in said above mentioned application, although in the accompanying drawings I have illustrated only so much of the complete machine as is necessary to arrive at an understanding of my present invention in its embodiment therein.
The frame which constitutes a support for the various working parts of the machine is made up in the main of two separate and separable side plates 1 and three castings 2, 3, and 4 by which the side plates are united. These parts are preferably made from an aluminum alloy and give suflicient strength and rigidity to the frame without adding unduly to the weight thereof. In addition to the parts referred to the frame is provided with a thin sheet metal outer shell that partly surrounds the frame, but which I have not deemed it necessary to illustrate.
The forward upper casting 2 is connected to the side plates 1 by screws 5 and constitutes the top plate of the machine. The front edge of the casting 2 is curved as indicated at 6 (see Fig. 3) from side-to-side of the machine and is formed at both sides thereof with depressed pockets 7 located wholly below the provided for the reception of the ribbon spools or cores on which the inking ribbon is wound. The inner wall of each pocket is slotted at 8 for the free passage therethrough of the ribbon as it passes across the machine from one pocket to the other. The rear segmentally formed edge of the casting 2 is provided with radial slots 9 therein that converge at, or substantially at, the printing point. An arelike channel 10 (Fig. 5) also is formed in this casting to receive a pivot wire 11. Toggle links 12 are received at their upper ends in the slots 9, said links being pivoted on the pivot wire 11 which constitutes an anchorage for one end of each of the to 'les comprising the members 12, 13 connect at 14 to the companion type bar 15.
From a consideration of Figs. 1 and 5 it will be seen that the casting 2 at the under- 190 side thereof is formed with a depression, recess or channel 16 that extends in a curved line around the casting substantially concentric with the pivot wire 11. This recess 16 constitutes a pocket in which a stop pad (Fig. 1) is seated and maintained. The purpose of this pad is to limit the overthrow movement of weighted element 18 of each type action as the type bar returns to normal position.
From an inspection of Figs. 1 and 5 it will be seen that the casting 2 at that part of the slotted portion thereof which is below the pivot wire 11 extends further toward the rear of the machine than the slotted portion above said pivot wire, as indicated at 19. This forms a curved rest or support concentric with the pivot wire 11 for a curved pad or rest 20 on which the free ends of the type bars 15 are supported when in the normal position.
Formed integral with the casting 2 is a yoke-like branch 21 that extends downward and rearward from each side of the casting and provides an open space between said branch and the body of the casting in which the type bars 15 operate This yoke-like branch 21 of the casting constitutes a support for a type bar center guide 22 secured thereto by screws 23.
The forward, lower casting 3, shown in detail in Fig. 6, underlies the casting 2 and is connected by screws 24 to the side plates 1. The segmental rear edge of the casting 3 is slotted radially, at 25, each slot therein being in the same radial plane as the companion slot 9 in the casting 2. The type bars 15 are pivoted in the slots 25 on a segmental pivot wire 26 received in a channel 27 in the casting 3. An actuating slide 28 also works in each slot 25 and is supported therein by a segmental sheet metal strip 29 secured to the casting 3 by screws 30. Each actuating slide 28 has gear teeth 31 thereon which mesh with geeth 32 on the heel of the companion type The forward curved edge of the casting 3 is slotted radially at 33, each slot 33 being'in the same radial plane as the companion slot 25 in the rear of casting. Upright arms or links 34 for the type actions are pivoted in the slots 33 on a segmental pivot wire 35 received in a channel 36. A slightly resilient, segmental buffer late 37 (Fig. 1) has its foot piece secured y rivets 38 to the upper side of the casting 3. The arms 34 of the type actions coact with the plate 37 to prevent an overthrow of toggles and aid in effecting a quick return of the parts to normal position.
The casting 3 near its ends has depending lugs 39 thereon to the lower faces of which is secured, by screws 40, a sheet metal supporting plate 41, shown in detail in 7. The plate 41 is slotted at 42 to receive fastening lugs 43 and 44 of hangers 45, as shown in Fig. 1. To these hangers are pivoted angular sublevers 46 which are pivoted to the slides 28 to actuate them. The sublevers 46 are connected through links 47 with key levers 48. These key levers are pivoted on a pivot rod 49 supported in part by bracket arms 50 carried by the casting 3. It will be seen that the casting 3 constitutes a type bar segment and also a segment for the upright arms 34 operatively connected with the type bars, as Well as constituting a support for other parts of the type actions.
A bracket is secured to the rear of the casting 3 and has arms 51 that support a universal bar 52 actuated by the heels of the type bars.
The third casting 4 which unites the side plates 1 at the rear thereof is connected to said side plates by screws 53 and constitutes the rear of the machine. This casting with its forwardly projecting arms 4 constitutes a support for various working parts of the machine as disclosed in my applications Serial Nos. 365,426 and 367,733 filed respectively May 23 and June 1, 1929, the former now having issued and bearing Patent No. 1,7 67,- 877. Such working parts constitute the case shift or carriage supporting frame and various parts carried thereby, as well as means for supporting and guiding the carriage in the rear of the printing point. To this latter end, as will be seen from an inspection of Fig. 2, the casting 4 is inclined upward from its outer ends to about midway in the length thereof. This highest, central portion 4 of the casting 4 extends up in the rear of the platen 54, as shown in Fig. 1, and resists the rearward pressure of the type bars thereon. This upwardly extending portion 4 of the casting is connected to the carriage and guides it in its case shifting as well as its travel, as fully disclosed in my said application Serial #367,733 and in my said patent.
The rear side of the casting 4 is flat, and as pointed out above constitutes the rear side of the frame, as will beunderstood from a consideration of Fig. 1. However, in order to make the casting 4 light in weight without reducing the strength thereof, I prefer to form the body thereof comparatively thin and provide integral strengthening webs 55 on the front face of the casting, as shown in Fig. 2. The inclined bearing portions 56 on this face constitutes a seat to which a guide plate for the carriage is secured, as disclosed in my said application Serial #367,733 and in said patent. A hole 57 located about centrally in the casting 4 extends therethrough .to enable type actions are all maintained compact in proper correlation, yet the pivotal centers of the type bars are disposed in a plane at in appearance and outline. To this latter end the casting 2 and the rear face of the casting 4, which are not covered by the shell hereinbefore referred to, may be directly finished in any suitable manner, either with a bright metal, japan or lacquered finish.
Various changes may be made in the frame structure without departing from my invention as it is defined in the accompanying claims.

A frame for atypewriting machine having separate side plates firmly united by a casting that constitutes the top plate of the 39 machine and is closed and curved at its front edge from side-to-side of the machine, said casting constituting a support substantially in the plane of the top plate for parts of the type actions and having a central opening for the type bars bounded at the rear by a branch integral with the casting and constltuting a a support for a type bar center guide.
12. The combination in a front stroke typewriting machine of separate side plates of the 40 frame firmly united by a casting that constitutes the top plate of the machine, said top plate having a series of radial slots therein,
and toggle links for the typeactions operating in said radial slots and anchored on a 5 pivot wire supported by said casting.

The combination in a front stroke typewriting machine of separate side plates of the frame firmlyunited by a casting that constitutes the top plate of the machine, said to plate having a seriesiof radial slots therein, the upper side of said slotted portion of the casting constituting a support for a segmental type bar rest or pad, and toggle links for the type actions operating in said radial slots ands-anchored on a pivot wire supported by said casting.

The combination in a typewriting machine of side plates of the frame united by a casting that constitutes the top plate of the machine, said top plate having a segmental recess in the under side thereof, a stop pad in said segmental recess, and a series of type actions each having a part that coacts with and is limited in its movement by said stop pad.

The combination in a typewriting machine of side plates of the frame united by a substantially horizontally disposed casting having a segmental rear edge with radially disposed slots therein; and a segmental front edge with a series of radial slots therein that are aligned with the first mentionedradial slots; and a series of type actions comprising pivoted type bars, a series of slides that coact with the type bars to actuate them, and
pivoted members, the pivoted end portions of the type bars and said slides working in said first mentioned slots and said pivoted mem bers being pivoted and working in said second mentioned slots.

The combination in a typewriting machine of side plates of the frame united by a casting that constitutes the top plate of the machine and has a series of radial slots there- P in; a second casting below said first mentioned casting and uniting the side plates, said second casting having a segmental rear edge with radially disposed slots therein and atsegmental front edge with a series of radial slots therein that are aligned with its first mentioned radial slots; and type actions comprising pivoted type bars, toggle links, slides which coact with the type bars to actuate them and a series of pivoted members; and a pivot wire by which said ftoggle links are anchoreda'nd by-which they are supported to work in the slots in said first mentioned casting, the pivoted end portions of the type bars and said slides working in said slots in the rear edge of the said second casting and the said pivoted members working in said slots in the front edge of the second casting.
19. In a front stroke typewriting machine the combination of side plates of the frame, a 5 casting which unites said side plates, and
front stroke type bars pivoted on said casting, the plane of said casting and the pivots of the type bars being at substantially 8 to the horizontal. 10 20. In a front stroke typewriting machine the combination of side plates of the frame, a casting which unites said side plates and constitutes the top plate of the machine, a second casting which unites said side plates, 15 said castings being arranged one below the other in substantially parallel planes that are at substantially 8 to the horizontal, and type actions comprising type bars pivoted in a plane of substantially 8 to the horizon- 29 tal and actuating and controlling devices therefor including toggles, said toggles being anchored on said top plate and the type bars and certain of said type bar actuating and controlling devices being supported on 25 said second casting.
