A prior application bearing Serial Number 296,917 filed on August 2, 1928, for drilling mechanisms discloses a drilling mechanism in combination with a mining machine. The drilling mechanism thereinshowii ismounted on a turret so. it may drill in the, face of the coal or atright angles thereto and is adaptable to drill holes of a large enough diameter to accominodate llIlllle timbers for supporting the mine roof.
My present invention shows a drilling mechanism similar to that shown in my prior application adaptable to drill holes in a mine wall of a large diameter mounted on a turret which in turn is mounted on a turntable which is movable transversely of a portable truck so that a plurality of holes may be drilled along amine face at various angles and elevations with respect thereto or so that holes may efficiently be drilled in the mine Wall at right-angles to the mine face in places where the mine wall is overhanging the mine rail or depressed therefrom as well as where the "sides of the mine wall are perpendicular to the mine bottom.
My invention may be more clearly understood with reference to the following drawings, wherein 1 Figure 1 is a top plan View of the drilling truck with parts broken away and in section to more clearly show the details of m invention;
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the device embodying my invention with parts broken away and in section to more clearly show the details of my invention; and
Figures 3, 4 5 and 6 are diagrammatic views of the drllhng mechanism showing said drilling mechanism drillingin a mine Wall under various mining conditions.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several figures.
Referring now to the details of the embodiment illustrated'in the drawings, 10 indicates a truck comprising a main frame 11 supported on wheels 12, 12, and axles 13, 13. A turntable 1 1 is mounted on said truck and is movable transversely thereof. Said turntable has a motor thereon which motor has a supporting means at one end thereof for supporting a drilling mechanism generally indicated at 16.
The turntable 14 comprises a circular plate 17 having the motor 15 bolted thereon which plate is mounted on and rotatably movable on a plate 18 which plate in turn is movable transversely of the truck 10 in guides 19, 19. Guide strips 20, 20, provide a means to hold the circular plate 17 on the plate 18 and guide said plate as it is rotated on the plate 18. Cap screws 21, 21, hold the guide strips 20, 20, on the plate 18. Tightening of said cap screws will tighten the guide strips 20, 20, on the plate 17 to hold said plate from movement while loosening of said cap screws will allow said plate to rotate on the plate 18.
The guides 19, 19, comprise guide members 22, 22, fixed to angles 23, 23, which angles extend transversely of the truck frame 11. A portion of the guide members 22, 22, overla-p a portion of the plate 18. The guide members 22, 22, are fixed to the angles 23, 23, by means of nuts and bolts indicated at 241, 24, so that tightening of said nuts and bolts will hold the plate 18 from transverse movement on the truck 11. while loosening of said nuts and bolts will allow said plate to be moved transversely of said truck.
Any suitable hand operated means may be provided to move the plate 18 and'turntable 14 transversely of the truck 10, as for instance, a crow bar or any other suitable hand operated means. A bar 26 extends transversely of the truck frame 11 and has a channel 27 thereon, the open end of said channel fitting over the bar 26 for a portion of its depth. A plurality of apertures 28, 28, are provided in the channel 27 so a crow bar or any other form of lever means may beinserted therein. These apertures 28 in the channel 27 form a means whereby a crow bar or any other form of lever means may obtain a grip to move the plate 18 and turntable 14 trains versely of the truck 10 thus providing a means whereby the drilling mechanism 16 may drill at various positions along a mine Wall while the truck 10 is held in a stationary position.
The drilling mechanism 16 is supported at the rearward end of the motor 15 on a turret 30. The turret 30 includes a housing member 31 which forms an end plate for the motor 15 and base for a. turntable 33. The turntable 33 has a forked portion 34 projecting upwardly therefrom which forms a support for a shaft 35, the;ends of which form a trunnion support for a member 36.
The member 36has a tubular arm 37 projecting forwardly therefrom which in turn has a drilling head 38 adjustably mounted on its forward end. The member 36 is split I for a portion of its length and is clamped .on the tubular arm 37 by any suitable means herein shownas nuts and bolts. A hearing member 39 within the tubular arm 37 forms a bearing member for a shaft 40 which extends the entire length of said tubular arm for driving the drilling mechanism 16 from the motor 15.
The drilling head 38 is trunnioned on a member 42 on the forward end of the tubular arm 37 so as to be angularly movable with respect to said arm. A strap 43 is provided to hold said drilling head 38 in various desirable positions with respect to said tubular arm said strap being attached to said drilling head and tubular arm by nuts and bolts 44.
The drilling mechanism 16 and drilling head 38 is similar to that described in a prior application Serial Number 268,733., filed by me April 9, 1928, so will not herein be described in detail. A gear 45 is journaled in the drilling head 38 on its hub and has a threaded shaft 46 passing through the hub of said gear and feathered therein so said shaft may move through said gear for substantially its entire length. Threaded jaws 47 are provided on the drilling head 38 to engage said threaded shaft to move said shaft through the gear 45 as said gear is rotating said shaft. The jaws 47 are engaged or disengaged with the threaded shaft 46 by means of a hand operated disc 48. Suitable frictional means controlled by a hand wheel 49 are also provided to stop feeding or translational movement of the threaded shaft 46 on overload of the drilling mechanism. A tubular member 50 extends rearwardly of the drilling head 16 to form a supporting means for the threaded shaft 46.
The threaded shaft 46 has a squared end 51 adaptable to fit in a socket of a cutter and drill holding member 52 for driving said cutter and drill holding member. A twist drill 53 of an ordinary fish tail type is held in the forward portion of the cutter and drill holding member 52, and a plurality of cutters 54, 54, project angularly forwardly therefrom for drilling a hole in a mine wall of a larger diameter than can be obtained from the ordinary fish tail type of twist drill as is fully described in my prior application Serial Number 296,917, hereinbefore mentioned.
The spur gear 45 is driven by means of a spur gear 55 keyed on the end of the shaft 40. Provision is made for driving the gear 45 from the gear 55 at the several permissible angles of said gears relative to each other, by arranging the pivotal axis of the head 38 and member 42 so it will coincide with the pitch circles of both gears 45 and and providing said gears with relatively deep teeth ehamfered at their edges to prevent binding between said gears.
The shaft 40 has a bevel pinion '58 keyed to its lower end which is driven by a bevel gear 59 freely mounted on the shaft The bevel gear 59 is driven by a bevel pinion 60 on a vertical shaft 61 journaled within the turntable 33. A worm gear 62 is freely mounted on the vertical shaft 61 and has driving connection therewith by means of a suitable clutch means (not shown) of the ordinary type. The worm gear 62 is driven by a worm 63 on a motor shaft 64 of the motor 15.
A means is provided to support the tubular arm 37 in various angular positions with respect to the motor 15. Said means comprise a plurality of adjustable supports 66 pivoted to opposite sides of the drilling head 38 at one end and mounted in brackets 67 on opposite sides of the motor 15 at their opposite end. Said. adjustable supports may be of any type well known to the art, but herein comprises a threaded tube 68 having a handwheel' 69 at the central portion thereof and having rods 70 and 71 threaded therein at opposite ends thereof. The rod 71 is pivotally mounted to the drilling head 88 while the bottom rod 70 is pivotally mounted to a member 72 which is fixed in the bracket 67 so that rotation of the hand wheel 69 in one direction or the other will raise or lower the tubular arm 37 and the drilling head 38 so that holes may'be drilled at various elevations with respect to the mine bottom.
A power bracket 74 is provided to drive thetruck 10 from the forward end of the motor shaft 64. Said power bracket is of a usual type and has a worm 75 journaled therein which drives a worm gear 76 keyed on a transverse shaft 77 journaled therein. The worm 75 is driven from the forward end of the motor shaft 64 by means of a coupling shaft 78. The coupling shaft 78 has an irregular upturned end 7 9 at one end thereof which fits in an irregular socket 80 keyed on the forward end of the motor, shaft 64.
The opposite portion of said shaft is squared and passes through asquared hole in the worm 75, and is slidable therein so the irregular end 79 may be removed from the socket 80 when it is desired to disconnect the worm 75 from the motor 15. A member 81 is adaptable to bear against the forward end of the coupling shaft 78 when said shaft is connected to the motor 15. A sprocket 82 on the outer end of the transverse shaft 7 7 has driving connection with the forward truck axles 13 through a sprocket 83 and drive chain 84. The forward and rearward truck axles 13 are connected together by means of a sprocket 85, drive chain 86 and sprocket 87.
Means are provided to hold the truck 10 in a stationary position when a hole is being drilled in the mine wall.
Said means herein comprise a plurality of clamps 88 which depend from the forward and rearward portions of the truck frame 11 and are clamped on each mine rail. The clamps 88 may be of any type well known to the art and as herein shown comprise menibers 89 extending from the top ortion of the truck frame 11 to one side 0 the mine rail, and having members 90 which may clamp on the opposite side of said mine rail. A link 91 passes around the members 89 and 90 to hold said members in contact with the mine rail. A wedge shaped member 92 passes through a slot in the top portion of the member 89 and is interposed between said member and the truck frame 11 to raise the members 89 and 90 above the mine rail when it is desired to travel about the mine or to allow said members to engage the mine rail to hold the truck 10 in a stationary position on the mine rail.
It may now be seen that I have provided a drilling .mechanism mounted on a portable truck for drilling holes in a mine wall and that since my drilling mechanism is both vertically and angularly adjustable with respect to said truck and is mounted on a turntable movable transversely of said truck, that holes may be drilled in various positions in a mine face or in a ribat right angles thereto at various angular positions with respect to said rib or face without movement of the truck. This provides a means whereby shot holes may be drilled in the mine face and holes for supporting mine timbers may be drilled in the mine ribs at right angles thereto while the truck for supporting the drilling mechanism is clamped to the mine rails in a stationary position.
Figures 3, 4, 5 and 6 show the device of my invention drilling holes of a large diameter for accommodating mine timbers in the ribs or walls of a mine entry. These figures show the ribs as being uneven and depressed frornor overhanging the mine rails as are usual conditions in coal mines. The truck 10 is brought to drilling position on the mine rails and clamped in said position by means of the clamps 88, 88, thus affording a steady support for the drilling mechanism 16. Where the rib overhangs the mine rail as is shown in Figure 5, the turntable 14 moved to the opposite side of the mine truck from said overhanging rib and fixed in a stationary position on said truck by means of the cap screws 21 and the nuts and bolts 2 1 and a hole is drilled in said overhanging mine wall in the usual manner. Figure 6 shows a rib depressed from the mine wall. In this instance the turntable 14 is moved to the side of the mine truck 10 adjacent the depressed rib and held in a stationary position on said mine truck and a hole is drilled in said depressed rib in the usual manner.
While I have shown and described one form of my invention, I do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction or arrangement of parts herein shown and described, except as specifically limited in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a drilling mechanism, a truck having wheels and axles thereon for movement about a mine on mine rails, a turntable on said truck movable transversely thereof, clamping means for holding said turntable in a stationary position on said truck, a drilling arm supported on said turntable for movement about a vertical or horizontal axis, and a drilling head supported on the outer end of said drilling arm and angularl-y movable with respect thereto.
2. In a drilling mechanism, a truck having wheels and axles thereon for movement about a mine on mine rails, a turntable on said truck movable transversely thereof, a motor on said turntable, a drilling arm supported on said motor at one end thereof, a drilling head having a drill supported therein, said drilling head being supported on the outer end of said drilling arm for angular movement with respect thereto, and drive means for rotating and feeding said drill driven from said motor.
3. In a drilling mechanism, a truck having wheels and axles thereon for movement about a mine on mine rails, a truck frame, a plate movable transversely of said truck frame, a circular plate supported on said first mentioned plate for rotatable movement thereon, a motor on said circular plate and rotatably movable therewith, a drilling mechanism adjustably supported on said motor and driven from said motor in all permissible positions of adjustment with respect thereto, and guide means for guiding said first mentioned plate as it is moved transversely of said truck frame, said guide means also serving as a clamping means for holding said plate in a stationary position on said truck.
4. In a drilling mechanism, a truck having Wheels and axles thereon for movement about a mine on mine rails, a truck frame, a plate movable transversely of said truck frame, a circular plate supportedonsaid first mentioned plate for rotatable mevement thereon, a motor on said circular plate and rotatably movable therewith, a drilling mechanism adju'stably supported on said motor and driven from said motor in all permissible positions of adjustment with respect thereto, and guide means on said first mentioned plate for guiding said circular plate so said circular'plate may rotatably be moved on said first mentioned plate, said guide means also serving as a clamping means for holding said circular plate in a stationary position on said first mentioned plate.
5. In a drilling mechanism, a truck having Wheels and axles thereon for movement about a mine on mine rails, a truck frame, a plate movable transversely of said truck frame, a circular plate supported on said first mentioned plate for rotatable movement thereon, a motor on said circular plate and rotatably movable therewith, a drilling mechanism adjustably supported on said motor and driven from said motor in all permissible positions of adjustment with respect thereto, guide means for guiding said first mentioned plate as it is moved transversely. of said truck frame, and guide means on said first mentioned plate for guiding said circular plate for rotatable movement on said first mentioned plate, said guide means also serving as a clamping means for holding said circular plate in a stationary position on said first mentioned plate.
6. In a drilling mechanism, a truck having Wheels and axles thereon for movement about a mine on mine rails, a turntable on said truck, a motor supported thereon, a drilling mechanism adjustably supported on said motor for drilling a hole in a mine Wall at various angles and elevations With respect thereto and means for supporting said turntable and motor for movement transversely of said truck, said supporting means also supporting said turntable and motor in an overhanging position on one or the other sides of said truck.
7. In a drilling mechanism, a truck having Wheels and axles thereon for movement about a mine on mine rails, a turntable on said truck, a motor supported thereon, a drilling mechanism adjustably supported on said motor for drilling a hole in a mine wall at various angles and elevations With respect thereto, and means for supporting said turntable and motor for movement transversely of said truck, said supporting means also supporting said turntable and motor in an overhanging position on one or the other sides of said truck, comprising guide means for guiding said turntable as it is moved transversely of said truck said guide means also serving asv a clamping means for holding said turntable in a stationary position on said truck including an overhanging position with respect to said truck.
8. In a drilling mechanism, a truck having Wheels and axles thereon for movement about a mine on the mine rails, a turntable on said truck, a drilling head adjustably supported on said turntable for drilling a hole in a mine 'Wall at various angles and elevations with respect thereto, and means for supporting said turntable for movement transversely of said truck, said supporting means also supporting said turntable in an overhanging position on one or the other sides of said truck.
9. In a drilling mechanism, a truck having Wheels and axles thereon for movement about a mine on the mine rails, a turntable on said truck, a drilling head adjustably'supported on said turntable for drilling a hole in a mine Wall at various angles and elevations with respect thereto, and means for supporting said truntable for movement transversely of said truck, said supporting means also supporting said turntable in anoverhanging position on one or the other sides of said truck comprising guide means for guiding said turntable as it is moved transversely of said truck, said guide means also serving as a clamping means for holding said turntable in a stationary position-on said truck including an overhanging position with respect to said truck.
