In connection with the foregoing, it is a further object to provide an arrangement whereby one of the electric conductors necessery for establishing the electrical circuit may be folded and wrapped directly into the paper shell as the same is wrapped around the battery cells. Referring first to Figure 1, I have therein illustrated two cells of battery 5 end 6, placed end to end. Each of these includes an outer shell constituting one pole or terminal oi the battery and e central end'contc-ct at one end which constitutes the other pole. lVheu the two cells are set together end to end as shown in Figure l, the cent contact '7 of the lower cell comes into engagement with the bottom of the outer shell of the upper cell 5, and the central terminal 8 of the upper cell is in position to be engaged by the center contact of the lamp presently to he described.
The two cells 5 and. 6 are surrounded and enclosed by an insulating layer 9 of paper or the like, and in some cases an outside layer 10 of celluloid or other water-proof and protecting material is placed around the outside of the device.
The paper shell 9 is carried up beyond the upper end of the upper cell 5 a sufficient dis tance to receive the lamp socket 11. Said lam socket is generally provided with two or t ree turns of rather coarse thread as illustrated in Figure 1, and. by screwing the lamp socket down into the projecting portion of the paper shell, these threads will work themselves into the material of the aper shell and thus in effect thread the soc et lnto place.
The socket member 11 also includes the downwardly extending neck portion 12, which receives the base 13 of the incandescentlamp 1 1. When the lamp is thus threaded into place its central contact- 15 en a es the contact 8 of the cell '5 so as to esta lish connection therewith.
There is a spring clip 16, the upper end 17 which is either soldered or brazed or otherwise permanently attached to the flan 18 of the socket member 11. The lower en of the clip 16 is generally provided with a" small I ball 19 in line with a hole 20 formed in the outside shell of the casing or housing, but said hole 20 does not extend clear through the insulating material or layer 9, but stops short thereof as shown in Figure 1.
A strip of conducting material 21 such as tinfoil or the like, has its lower end in engagement with the outside shell of the lower cell 6. Said strip 21 then extends up along the device to a position opposite to and even beyond the opening 20, it being noticed from examination of Figure 1. that the strip 21 is also insulated from the outside shell of the cell 5. Due to this circumstance there is no short circuiting of the two cells together; and when the clip 16 is depressed so as to carry its ball '19 through the opening 20, said ball makes contact with the conducting strip 21 and thus closes the electric circuit, applying the full 'voltage to the lamp filament and illuminating the same I twill be noted that in order to prevent accidental closing of the lamp circuit, the sockct member 11 may be turned or unthreaded a slight distance so that the clip 16 is rotated away from a position of coincidence with the opening 20. Under such circumstances, the clip if depressed will not close the circuit.
As a manufacturing proposition, I prefer to build up this spotlight in. the following manner;
The insulating or paper layer 9 is cut into the form of a rectangular blank as shown in Fi ure 4, one corner at the lower end thereof oeing cut away as shown at 22. The strip of tin foil 21 is then laid along the surface of the blank as shown in Figure 4, with its lower end overlying this cut away portion 22. The blank is also provided with a hole 23 adjacent to its other edge and at the proper position to correspond to the ball 19 of the clip 16. The two cells 5 and 6 are wrapped into the blank 9 commencin at the left hand edge thereof, it being un erstood that the strip 21 lies to the outside of the blank 9. The blank is then wrapped around the two cells and the blank is of sufiicient width to enable it to wrap around approximately one and one-fourth times as shown in Figure 2. Thereupon, the right hand edge portion of the blank will come around and overlie the conducting strip 21, thereby insulating and protecting the same exterion ly. At t e same time, the conducting strip 21 is insulated from the outside surfaces of the cells 5 and 6 at all points with the exception of the position of the notch 22, at which point the lower end of the conduct ing strip 21 will reach over and make (ii-- rect contact with the outside surface of the lower cell 6. Furthermore, when the paper strip 9 has been wrapped around in the above manner, the hole 23 will come around to a position where it overlies the upper portion of the conducting strip 21 so as to expose the same at a point where the ball 1-) of the clip 16 may work through said hole and close the circuit when the clip is depressed.
After the paper blank has been wrapped around in the above manner, its edge may be sealed, being gummed or otherwise ro vided for that purpose; and if desire an outside layer 10 of celluloid or other material may be wrapped in place or formed directly on to the outside surface of the paper strip. Both forms are illustrated in Figures 2 and 3. In an case, however, the layer 10 is provided wit an opening which will register with the opening 23 so that the proper circuit closing operatlons may be performed.

After the wrapping has been placed on the cells in the above manner, the socket member 11 may be screwed down into the projecting upper end thereof, whereupon the manufacturing operations are complete.

While I have herein shown and described only certain features of my present invention, still I do not intend to limit myself thereto except as I may do so in the claims.
l claim:
1. As an article of manufacture, a spot lightcomprising in combination a pair of electric cells, each having a central contact of one polarity, and an external shell of opposite polarity, said cells being placed 1n axial alignment, with the central contact of one cell in engagement with the bottom of the shell of the cell above .to establish series contact therewith, a casing for said cells comprising a blank of paper or the like wrapped around the two cells and projecting beyond the upper end of the upper cell, said paper blank, or the like, having one of its lower corners cut away, a strip of conducting material laid against the edge portion of the paper blank at the side away from the cells and having its lower end overlying said cut away portion and in electrical contact with the shell of the lower cell, said paper blank being wrapped around the cells and overlying said strip of conducting material to protect and insulate the same, there being a hole in said overlying portion of the paper blank in alignment with said strip of conducting material, an electric socket threaded into the projecting end portion of the paper shell above the uppermost cell, an electric lamp threaded into said socket and having its central contact in engagement with the central contact of the uppermost cell, and a spring clip secured to said socket member and making electrical contact therewith and extending downwardly at the outside of the shell to a position opposite to the hole aforesaid, whereby upon depression of said spring clip its lower end projects through the hole aforesaid and into electrical contact with the conducting strip aforesaid to thereb close the circiut, substantially as describe 2. As a new article of manufacture, a spot light comprising in combination an electric battery having an exterior shell establishing one polarity and also having a central up wardly extending contact for opposite p0 larity, a protecting and insulating shell for said battery enclosing the same. a strip of conducting material laid in axial direction and enclosed within the material of said protecting and insulating shell, the lower end of said strip of conducting material "eing in electrical connection with the exterior shell of the battery, there being an opening in the insulatin material permitting communication with 51a strip of conducting material at such point, a socket member supported by the upper portion of the shell, and electric lamp located within said socket member and having a central contact in err-- ;ga rement with the central contact of the battery, and a spring clip connected to and in ei :'.trical contact with said shell, said spring clip overlying the outside of the device to a osition in alignment with the opening in the insulatin material, whereby when the s ring clip is depressed, itslower end extends tiirough said openings and into contact with the strip of conducting material aforesaid, substantially as described.
5) As a new article of manufacture a spotlight comprising in combination or. eleo tric battery having an exterior shell establishing one polarity and also having a central upwardly extending contactof opposite polarity, a protecting and insulating shell for said battery enclosing the same, a strip of conductin material laid in axial direction and enclose within the material of said protecting and insulating shell, there being an opening in the insulating material per niitting communication with the stri of conducting material at such point, a soc et member supported by the upper portion of the shell, an electric lamp located within said iret member and having a central contact in engagement with the central contact of the battery, whereby the socket member is of one polarity and the exterior shell of the bat-- tcry is of opposite polarity, a spring clip in electrical connection with. one of said parts, and the strip of conducting material being in electrical connection with the other of said parts, the free end of the spring clip being in alignment with the openin in the 1nsulat ing shell, whereby when said spring clip tern-assert it makes contact with the condiictring strip to close the circuit, substantialiy as ribed.
