My invention relates to a novel construc- 10 causing vibration of the nap of the material being cleaned, similar to the action of a beater or brush but without the injurious-eflect of mechanical beating, my novel device being shut off at will and being adjustable at any period readily to cause more or.less rapid vibration to suit conditions. y While my invention is capable of being carried out by various forms of mechanisms, I have shown herein one form which may be employed, it being understood thatvarlous modifications of the same may be employed.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention I have shown in the accompanying drawings one form'thereof which is at present preferred by me, since the same has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be'variously arranged and organized and thatmy invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and described.

S. The intermediate casing 8 is preferably rectangular in shape and is provided with a. bottom wall 9, side walls 10, and an upper wall 11, see Fig. 5. Upon the upper wall 11 there is formed the rear extension or -wall 12 and in the front wall 13, as seen in lements in further meral 18 designates a valvular element, best seen in Figs. 5, 6, and 7, the same comprising the body portion 19 having the lower stem or pintle 20-which is mounted on the step hearing 21 seen in Fig. 5. The upper stem or pintle 22 is rotatably mounted in the guide opening 23 in the body 11 and has secured thereto one end of the short arm 24 whose other end is pivotally attached at the point 25 to the link 26. There are two valvular elements 19, one on each side of the intermediate casing- 8, as will be understood from Figs. 4 and 6,

to the pivot point 27 and its opposite end connected to afixed lug 31, as will be understood from Figs. 4 and 5. 32 designates an automatic make and break switch which by means of the wiring indicated at 33 and 34 controls the energizing of the solenoid 29 whereby the core 28'tl1ereof is reciprocated and by reason of the intermediate connections 25 and 24 the valvular elements 19 are caused to flutter or oscillate Within th intermediate casing 8. The latter is provided with the rear flange 36 having connection with the fan chamber 2 while the front flange 37 permits connection to be readily made with the suction nozzle 4.
The wiring connection 33 and 34 can be conrected to any suitable source of electrical energy as the circuit for the motor within casing 3.
The operation is as follows:
lVhen the switch 32 is turned on the solenoid 29 is energized and de-energized, alternately and continuously so long as the switch 32 is turned on and thus causes the core 28 to reciprocate. The reciprocations of the core 28 by reason of the toggle connection, seen in Fig. 4, will cause the valvular elements 19 to flutter or oscillate, the tension of the spring causing said valvular elements normally to assume the position seen in Figs. 4 and 6, which is the positionthe parts assume when the switch 32 is off.
During an operating period, at regular or lrregular lntervals, as desired, vibration of the nap of the material being cleaned occurs, which vibration is similar to the action of a beater or a brush but without the injurious eflects obtained in mechanical beating. In,
other words the entire operation of cleaning surfaces according to my novel structure is that of suction. The arts ofthe intermediate casing 8 are so tted with respect to one another and with respect to the suction nozzle 4 and fan casing 2 that access may be readily had to the parts operating the valvular elements, the advantage of which is important.
7 I am aware that the invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or' essential attributes thereof, and I therefore desire the present embodiment to be considered in all respects is/illustrative and not restrictive, reference being had to the appended claim rather than to the foregoing description to indicate the scope of theinvention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
pivotally mounted within and adapted .to
close the passageway in said casing to inter- 4 connection operatively connecting said solenoid to said valvular elements.
