Description

RAIL JOINT Original Filed April 28, 1951 Inventor (32 2262226 Warm oaiiz M flliorney Patented Jan. 5, 1932 CORNELIUS WEABMOUTH, 0F GRIC HTON, WEST VIRGINIA RAIL JOINT Original application filed April 28, 1931, Serial No. 533,446.
Divided and this application filed October 22, 1931. Serial 1810. 570,424.
This invention appertains to new and useful improvements in railway surface tracks, and more particularly to a novel railroad rail oint.
The present invention is a division of my co-pending application Serial N 0. 533,446 which was filed April 28, 1931, for the same subject matter.
An important object of the invention is to provide a rail oint of the interlocking type, which in use will eliminate the usual fish plate and similar joint retaining means, with the end in view of reducing the cost of providing rail joints and maintaining the same.
Other important objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent tothe reader of the following specification.
In the drawings Figure 1 represents a fragmentary perspective view of the male end of the rail.
Fig. 2 represents a fragmentary perspective view of the female end of the rail.
Fig. 3 represents a fragmentary bottom plan view of a pair of rail ends interlocked.
Fig. 4 represents a vertical transverse sec'- tional view through the rail joint.
Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals designate like parts, it can be seen that one rail section is denoted by numeral 5 and is provided with an enlargement 6a at one end, undercut to provide the ball eXt-ension 7a and depending from the extension 7a and extending outwardly from the end of the enlargement 6a is the tongue 8a which tapers inwardly from the outer end thereof.
This tongue So does not taper vertically but is provided with a transverse opening 9a which registers with the opening 13a in the protuberances 12a'12a, protruding out wardly from the rail end enlargement 11a on a rail section end similar to the opposite end of the rail 5 from that shown in Fig.1.
The protuberances 12a12a taper from their outer ends inwardly, so as to provide an outwardly tapering pocket within which the said tongue 8a is engageable. The same type of bolt 14 is. employed for tongue 8a and protuberances 12(1-1211. This bolt 14 will prevent upward or downward movement of the tongue 8a and the tapering connecting the construction of the protuberances 12a12a prevent longitudinal tongue 8a or at least will positively prevent displacement in the event the bolt 14 becomes sheared.
This bolt 141's split at its threaded ends to provide the legs l515, which afterthe nut 16 has been engaged thereon, are bent outwardly in'opposite directions as shown in Fig. 4, to prevent displacement of the nut 16. While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood. that numerous changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is 1. A rail joint comprising a pair of rail ends, one of said rail ends being provided with a ball extension, a depending tongue on the extension, said tongue tapering inwardly, the base portion of the complementary rail end, said protuberancestapering inwardly to provide a substantially triangular-shaped pocket for receiving the tongue, openings in the protuberances and tongue, through which the securing means may be disposed.
2. A rail joint comprising a pair of rail ends, one of said rail ends being provided with a ball extension, a depending tongue on the extension, said tongue tapering inwardly, a pair of reduced protuberances on the base portion of the complementary rail end, said protuberances tapering inwardly to provide a substantially triangular-shaped pocket for receiving the tongue, openings in the protuberances and tongue, and a bolt for dis position through the registering openings and'being slotted at its threaded end to provide a pair of legs, a nut for engagement on the threaded portion of the bolt, said legs being bendable laterally in opposite directions to prevent displacement of the nut.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature.
