Description

Dec. 29,1931. H NEUwmTH 1,838,494
COMBINATION POCKET BURNING AND MAGNIFYING GLASS AND COMPASS Filed May 31, 1930 INKENTOR.
YEA'TTORNEY' Patented Dec. 29, 1931 HERMAN NEUWIRTH, OE BROOKLYN, NEW YORK COMBINATION POCKET BURNING- .AND MAGNIFYING GLASS, AND COMPASS Application filed May 31,
This invention relates to sportsmens and boy scouts accessories and more particularly is directed to an improved construction of a combination pocket burning and magnifying glass and compass,
Among the objects of'the invention, is to generally improve the construction of ac cessories of the character described to provide a device which can be conveniently carried in the pocket, which shall form a rugged structure capable of withstanding hard and rough usage yet shall be neat in appearance, which shall comprise few and simple parts that are readily assembled, and which shall be cheap to manufacture, and practical and eflicient to a high degree in use.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangements of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawings, in which is shown, one of the various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a combination pocket burning magnifying glass'and compass constructed to embody the invention, in
dot and dash lines the magnifying glass being shown swung out of the housing. v
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view taken on lines 2-2 in Fig. 1, and r r Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the improved one-piece housing. Referring in detail to the-drawings, 10 denotes a device in the form of a sportmans and boy scouts combination pocket burning and magnifying glass, and compass embodying the invention. Said device 10 is seen: to comprise a housing 11 formed of a single fiat sheet folded on itself to provide a U- shaped structure having upper and lower portions 11a and 11?), respectively, said portions being positioned in superimposed spaced relation, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Said housing may preferably be made of a securely fitted a compass element 17 of any 1930. Serial No. 457,890.
resilient metallic stamping having nickel or gilt surface finish. The portions 11a and- 111), are interconnected atone end of the housing bv an integrally formed mid-portion 11c, and the free ends of said portions 11a and 116 may be drilled or punched with aligned holes 11d in which a pin. 12 is secured.
Said pin serves as a pivoting shaft for a bearing lug 13 extending from a frame 14 which carries a lens or magnifying glass 15, the latter being secured in the frame 14 in any suitable well understood manner.- The magnifying glass 15 is preferably circular in shape and the portions 11a and 11?) may each be made to have an elliptical contour so as to form a close fitting casing for the magnifying glass-and its frame when swung into the housing, as is clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The mid-portion end of the housing 11 preferably terminates in a loop or ring 116 which links with a bail 16, the latter serving to suspend the device 10 from a cord, key ring or-chain (not shown) for attaching to a persons wearing apparel.
The upper portion 11a may be formed with a central upwardly extending boss 11/ having a perforation or opening 11g, said perforated boss forming a socket in which is conventional construction.
The bearing lug 13 is preferably made the same width as the frame 14 or slightly wider. than the latter so that normally the frame 14 can be readily swung in and out of the housing. Inorder to retain. the frame 14 in its enclosed position within the housing 11, the lower and upper portions 11a and 11?) with the folded mid-portion 110 form a resilient structure for frictionally engaging the frame 14, said portions 11a and 11?) providing a spring clamping means, as at X, between the ends of the housing, as shown in Fig. 2.
From the above description, the practical application of the invention will now be apparent. After the parts have been assembled, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the device 10 with the frame and magnifying glass positioned, as shown in the full' lines in Fig. 1, can be readily carried in the pocket or attached to the chain, cord, or key ring by means of the bail 16, the compass element 17 being available for use in the well understood manner. Touse the lens 15 as a magnifying or burning glass, the frame 14 is simply swung out of the housing 11 on the pivoting shaft 12. While the frame 14 is enclosed in the housing 11, the portions 11a and 11b frictionally engage the frame I l and retain the burning or magnifying glass a ainst accidental swinging movement out 0 'said enclosed position yet give ready access thereto.
It should be noted that should the frame 14 of the magnifying or burning glass become relatively loose on its pivoted bearing due to wear, the spring clamping engagement of the portions 11a and 11?) act or may be adjusted to frictionally engage the frame 14 by simply pressing said portions together until they have been set for such frictional engagement.
The provision of the improved one-piece housing 11 formed of a single stamping, as above described, provides a relative inexpensive part which can be cheaply manufactured and readily assembled to the other parts with minimum labor.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several ob]ects of this invention are achieved and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawings is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
