Patented Dec. 29, 1931 UNITED STATES FRANK RABBIT, F BALTIMORE, MARYLAND GLARE SHIELD Application filed May 8, 1929. Serial No. 361,509.
This invention relates to glareshields for automobiles.
The main object of this invention is to provide an improved clamping device to hold glareshield-plates of colored glass or other transparent material in a number of different adjusted positions, and to provide an exceedingly quick and easy means of applying and releasing the clamp.
Another object is to provide a device of this character including a jointed support on which the clamping means is adjustable in practically every direction.
Another object is to provide for quickly and easily interchanging glareshield-plates.
Other objects and important features are pointed out or implied in the following details of description, in connection with the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a rear view of a device constructed in accordance with my invention, three different adjustments being shown in the ful1-line and broken-line positions.
Figure 2 is a left-side or edge view of the device, a part being shown in section.
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail sectional view, the section being taken through the central part of the clamping device and the glareshielding plate clamped thereby.
Figure 4 is a sectional view along the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a perspective View of one of the clamping aws.
Referring to the drawings in detail, in which similar reference characters correspond to similar parts in the several views, and in which the windshield-frame F and windshield-glass G are shown merely to illustrate the application of the device, the invention is now described in detail as follows:
An angularly bent plate or bracket is secured to the windshield-frame by screws or other appropriate means. The rearwardly extending wing 11 of the plate 10 is apertured to receive a screw-threaded end portion 12 of a U-shaped arm which is provided with a shoulder 13 to abut against one side of the car 11 while a thumb-nut 14 abuts against the other side of said ear. By manipulation of this thumb-nut, the said nut 17 combine to clamp the flattened end 60 against the flattened end of the member 18, and to hold the latter in an infinite number of adjusted positions with respect to the U- shaped arm 12-15.
The clamping device, which is more clearly shown in Figure 3, includes a rod 19 which fits snugly and adjustably in the tubular member 18, and the latter has a threaded aperture 20 which receives the thumb-screw 21. This thumb-screw normally bears against the rod. 19 and holds it in any one of an infinite number of adjustments, both longitudinal and circumferential or angular. The clamping device also includes two clamping jaws 22 (one of which is shown separately in Figure 5) a. washer or sleeve 23 which abuts against lugs or ears 24 which form a widened part on the rod 19, a tubular member or tube 25, and a nut or thumb-nut 26, which latter is adjustable on a threaded end 27 of the rod 19. The clamping jaws 22 are each provided with a groove 28 and with an apertured ear 29. The rod 19 extends through apertures 30 of the ears 29. The glareshieldplate 31 has its upper and lower edges in the respective downwardly and upwardly facing grooves 28, and the length of the sleeve or tube 25 is such that it permits the clamping jaws to be pressed against the upper and lower edges of the plate 31 by tightening the thumb-nut 26. However, when the thumbnut 26 is loosened, the plate 31 may be removed, and a plate of a difierent color may be substituted according to the desire or necessity of the person who is to drive the automobile and use the glareshield. When the plate 31 is removed, the jaws 22 retain their respective positions, or are retained by the combined effect of the shoulder or sleeve 23, the tubular member or tube 25 and the nut 26; and in this connection, it should be understood that it is unnecessary to remove the nut 26 for removing and replacing the plates 31, for they can be slid along the grooves 28 for such removal and replacement and interchange and for their different adjustments. Moreover, it will be seen that the tubular'memberor tube 25 assists in holding the ears 29 substantially parallel to one another,
so the grooves 28 will not exert a bending.
pressure on the plate 31, thereby avoiding possible breakage of the plate 31 by such bending pressure.
Although I have described thisembodiment of my invention specifically, I do not intend to limit my patent protection to these exact details of construction and arrangement,'for the invention is susceptible of numerous changes within the scope of the inventive ideas as implied and claimed.
lVhat I claim as my invention is:
In combination with a glareshield-plate and a tubular supporting element, of a rod formed with a widened part between its end portions, one of said end portions being normally clamped in said tubular supportingelement and being angularly and longitudinally slidable therein when unclamped, the other end portion of said rod being screwtlireaded at its extremity, a clamping nut threaded on said screw-threaded end portion, a tube around said rod and between said nut and said widened part, and two jaws each including an apertured ear and a groove, the apertured ear of one clamping jaw being around said rod and normally clamped between said widened part and said tube, said apertured ear of the other clamping j aw being around said rod and normally clamped between said nut and tubular member, said glareshield-plate having its upper and lower edges in the respective grooves of said clamping aws.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
