rihis invention relates to improvements in automatic door operating mechanisms, and has more particular reference to a door operating mechanism for garages and the like.
rl`he primary object of the present invention is to provide a door operating mechanism for operating a two-section garage door.
A still further objectof the invention is to provide a mechanism of the above mentioned character, which will positively open and close the doors of the garage, the same being accomplished without requiring the operator of the vehicle to leave the same, and further without necessitating the actual entrance or enit of the automobile whenever the doors are to be opened, or closed as the case may be.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a mechanism of the above mentioned character which is free of all such spring elements and the like which are liable to get out of working order.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a mechanism for opening and closing two section garage doors, that will be positive and ei'iicient in operation, practical, thoroughly reliable and otherwise well adapted to the purpose designed.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent during a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of my improved mechanism, the same being shown as associated with a conventional type of garage,
Figure 2 is a diagrammatical view for more clearly illustrating the invention,
Figure 3 is a detail view partly in section and partly in elevation for illustrating certain detail construction to be hereinafter more fully referred to.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of an an- Chor plate forming part of the invention,
Figure 5 is a perspective view of a rockable element forming part of the invention.
.Vith reference more in detail to the drawings, it will be seen that I have designated vided a suitable bracket 9 for pivotally supporting the link 8.
Vertical shafts 10 are journalled adjacent their upper ends in brackets 11 suitably secured to the corner posts 12 of the garage internally of the garage. Said shafts 1() adjacent their lower ends eXtend through suitable openings 13 provided therefor in the flooring 5 of the garage; and at said lower ends said shafts are journalled in the upper ends of the substantially U-shaped brackets 11i suitably mounted below the iiooring 5.
The shafts 10 adjacent their upper ends are provided with horizontal crank arms 15 that at their free ends are pivotally connected as at 16 to the free ends of the links 8.
Rockably supported adjacent the lower end of each of the brackets 14 is a relatively short or stub shaft 17 that on one end is equipped with a gear segment 18 adapted for rocking movement with the shaft 17. Meshing with the gear segments 18 are beveled gears 19 on the lower end of the shafts 10.
For effecting a simultaneous rocking movement of the gear segments 18, the gear segments 18 are connected by a horizontal rod 20.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that upon rocking movement of rod 20, in one direction the shafts 10 will be simultaneously rotated in one direction, and through the medium of the arms 15 and links 8 motion will be transmitted to the door sections 6 and U 7 for swinging the latter about their hinges to an open position. Manifestly upon rocking` of the shaft in an opposite direction the shafts 10 will be rotated in a suitable direction for affecting a closing of the door sections 6 and 7. Y Y

Each of the treadle members above referred to comprises a substantially rectangular plate 21 that is provided with a rectangular opening or aperture 22 adjacent one end of the aperture, the plate 2l is provided with a pair of spaced apertured ears 23. A wheel engaging member comprising a rectanguiar frame like body 24 adjacent one end thereof is pivotally connected to the ears 23 through the medium of suitable pivot pins 25. Each of the members 24 adjacent its pivoted end, and at one corner thereof is provided with a downwardly extending arm 25, and the lower end of each arm is pivoted as at 26 .to a connecting bar 27 that connects the member 24 of all of the treadle members l, 2, 3 and 4. (See Figure l). As is also shown in F igure l, the Wheel engaging member 24 ofthe treadle member 3 has its arm 25 provided with .a longitudinal slot 26 for accommodating the rod 20.
In regard to the arrangement of the treadle members,it will be seen that two ofthe treadle members, for .example 3 .and 4 are arranged interiorly of the garage G adjacent one side 0f the garage, while the renniining.; treadle members l `and?. are arranged exteriorly of the garage,.the members l and 2 being spaced apart from one another the same dista-nce as the members 3 and 4 vare spaced from one another.
In the operation of the device, with reference to Figure l, it will be seen that when the automobile is in vthe garage, one wheel of the automobile may rest on the wheel engaging member 24 of treadle 4 maintaining the same in a substantially horizontal position with result that the door sections 6 and 7 are maintained in a closed position.
Toepen the doors, lthe operator of the vehicle may reverse the rautomobile a sufficient distance to remove the said yfront wheel from engagement with the treadle 4 so that the rear wheel on the corresponding'side ofthe vehicle will roll on to the wheel engaging member `24, which wheel engaging member 24 is in the position shown in Figure l. Obviously, lwhen the rear wheel engages the treadle 3, the member 24 of treadle 3 under weight of the vehicle will be rocked, thus transmitting irocking `movement to the rod 20 This rocking movement of the rod 20 will of course cause a simultaneous rocking Vmovement of the gear segments 18 which will, through the medium of the gearing 1'9 rotate the shaft lO'thus swinging the door sections 6 and 7 upon their hinges to an open position in a manner hereinbefore described.
lVhen the automobile has been driven from outof the garage, the front wheel of the vehicle vmay then be driven over the wheel engaging member 24 of the treadle 2 thus rocking the treadle, which will move the connecting rod or bar 27 in a suitable direction or to the right in Figure l thus effecting a closing of the door sections 6 and 7 in a manner thought apparent.
When the vehicle is exteriorly of the garage, and it is desired to open the doors, the operator of the vehicle may effect an opening of the doors without leaving the automobile merely by driving the vehicle in such a manner that the forward wheel thereof will engage the wheel engaging member 24 of the treadle 2, which `member 24 of said treadle 2 is normally in that position shown in Figure l when the doors are closed. This rocking movement of the treadle 2 under weight of .the vehicle will actuate the connecting rod 7 for rocking the shaft 20 which through the V.medium -of the gear segments 18 and bevel gears 19 will rotate the shaft 10 in the proper direction for swinging the door sections 6 and 7 to an open position. When the vehicle is driven sufliciently far into the garage so that one of its forward wheels will engage the wheel engaging member 24 of the treadle 4, the doors will be automatically swung to a closed position as is obvious.
Even though I have herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of'my invention, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible to changes comprehended by the spirit of the invention as described, and the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
In a door operating mechanism, and in combination, a movably mounted door, a rotatably mounted shaft, means operatively connecting said shaft with said door for transmitting movement of the shaft to the door, a second rotatably mounted shaft, a gear on said first shaft, a gear segment on the second shaft meshing with said gear, a treadle comprising a rockably mounted member, said member provided with an arm, and a pin projecting from said gear segment and extending througha slot provided in said arm, whereby upon rocking movement of said rockable treadle member, said second shaft will be rotated for driving the first mentioned shaft.
