Description

L. D. HATTON.
GLASS LAMP.
Patented 0ct.31,1876.
in? Z7 6 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOFTUS D. HATTON, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN GLASS LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 183,803, dated October 31, 1876; application filed June 3, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LOFTUS D. HATTON, of the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Glass Lamps, especially adapted for street or ornamental use, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to produce a lamp constructed in a simple and economical manner, and offering the least obstruction to the rays of light emanating from the flame within said lamp.
Figure A shows a lamp elongated, of globular form, with an indentation at a point below its top, said indentation not offering any obstruction to an equal distribution of the glass in making, so that the expansion and contraction from heat and cold are uniform at all points, consequently offering less liability to breakage. I make those globes of any shape, oblong or globular, only changing the indentation to a suitable point, as the shape of lamp may require.
Fig. B shows a metal rim or ring, made in such a manner as to spring in or be otherwise fastened in indentation shown in Fig. A. The object of said rim or ring is to act as a support, and hold the globe in its position in and on whatever supporting ring or frame that may be used, and so arranged as not to interfere with the expansion or contraction of glass.
Fig. 0 shows lamp complete.
A, the lamp; D D, the indentation; E E, the rim or ring fastened in same, as shown and described.
Now, what 1 claim, and ask Letters Patent for, is-
A glass lamp, A, with an indentation at any suitable point below its top, D D, with a ring or rim, B, made of metal or any other suitable material, to be sprung into or otherwise placed in said indentation D D, the rim or ring to rest or otherwise be fastened to its supporting ring or frame.
