UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JESSE STUBBS, OF `MOUNT PLEASANT, IOWA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS BIGIEIII.1 ITO WARREN BEOKWITH, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN ROAD-SCRAPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 183,782, dated October 31, 1876; application filed September 2, 1876.
To all whom it 'ma/y concern Be it known that I, J EssE STUBEs, of Mount Pleasant, in the county of Henry and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road Scrapers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art toI which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention relates to improvements in road-Scrapers, or scrapers for grading purposes, of that class in which the scraper-box is suspended by a hinge-joint upon levers, which are mounted on wheels, and may be used to lower and control the box when loading, to support and carry it in an elevated 'position when loaded, and to sustain and carry it safely in an inverted position when unloaded; and the invention consist in attaching the draft-bar thereto by a movable connection, which is free to adjust itself in different positions, as required by different positions of the scraper-box, all as hereinafter fully described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a machine embodying my invention, and shown iu position for scrap- Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the saine, shown, by full lines, in position when loaded with earth, and elevated for supporting and carrying the same on thewheels, and by dot ted lines in position for scraping and loading. Fig. 3 is a side elevation, showing the scraperbox inverted for unloading and for carrying from place to place.
Referring to the parts by letters, letter A represents an axle, journaled in and carried by wheels B B. C C are levers, connected at their rear ends by a bar, O', from which handles C project rearwardly. The levers C are connected to the axle A, near their front ends, by clips or other suitable fastenings a, and the front ends of said levers C are formed into hook's c, which interlock with eyes d iu the upper front corners of the scraper-box D, to form a hinge-connection between the scraperbox and levers. The scraper-box D is constructed in any ordinary manner, with a cutter, d', at its anterior, and handles d on its posterior, sides or ends, and its position when scraping or loading with earth is plainly shown at Fig. 1, and by dotted lines at Fig. 2.
When loaded, the box D may be elevated by depressing the bar C', and may be sustained in this elevated position by the bar C engaging with a spring-hook, E, on the rear end of the box D, as shown by full lines at Fig. 2.
F is the draft-bar. (Shown partly broken away in the drawings.) G G are diverging bars at the rear end of the draftbar F, and stayed by a cross-bar, H. I I are plates, having arc-shaped slots t', and attached one to each side and front end of the box D in such position that the lower ends of the slots t' extend down to near the lower edge or bottom of the box D, and are in advance of their upper ends. The rear ends of the bars G have inwardlyprojecting studs g, which project into the slots t in the plates I I, and form the hinged connection between the draftfbar F and box D. J is a spring-hook, projecting upward from one of the bars G. K is a stud projecting from the side of the box D.
When the scraper is in use cutting and loading earth, gravel, or other substance, the studs g will draw forward and downward in the slots t', and thus bring the draft in proper line to prevent the scraper running too deeply, make the draft easier, and also place the machine under the easy control of the operator having hold of the handles d.
When the scraper is loaded, it may be elevated and sustained as hereinbefore described, and may be then inverted, to unload and turn into the position shown at Fig. 3, the catch J engaging with the stud K, and securing the box in said inverted position for local transportation on the wheels B.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a road-scraper,hinged to levers mounted on axle and wheels, substantially as described, the draft-bar, connected to the forward end of the scraper-box by a changeable bearing or connection, I, substantially as and In testimony that I claim the foregoing as for the purpose spectied. my own I affix my signature in presence of 2.
