This invention relates to improvements in. dies orjmolds and more especially a separable die; V
For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown such a die adapted for casting by the use of a vacuum or reduced pressure; although it is obvious that the invention may be used in connection with other casting processes. it
One of the features of my invention isthe provision of means for venting an confined between contacting surfaces of parts of such a die.
Another feature of my invention is the provision of such a die adapted for casting a plurality of bodies simultaneously, the gates to the several mold cavlties arranged in diverging relatlonshlp, lessening or preventing movement or distortion of the die or parts thereof due to shrinkage caused by cooling or freezing of the metal in the gates.

Although the parts of the die lO and 11 are.
placed together in contact with each other, the joints are not air tight. Consequently there are provided air escape passages between the parts of the die leading from the mold cavities to the interior of the receiver. hen air is exhausted from the receiver it will therefore be drawn out of the mold cavities and molten metal drawn or sucked up into such cavities by atmospheric pressure.
As stated above. the die is adapted for easting a plurality of bodies (here shown as two) at the same time. The metal inlet to the die is indicated by 22. From this inlet there is a gate 25 leading to each mold cavity. In order to prevent or lessen distortion or movement of the mold or parts thereof-due to shrinkage caused by cooling of the metal in the gates 25, 25, said gates are made to diverge from each other in their paths from the inlet 22 to the cavities 14, 1 (see Fig. It is to be noted that the upper side of the gate as indicated by 26 is wedge-shaped. so that as the gates 25 shrink, the upper ends being held by the castings in cavities 14. the wedgeshaped portion at 26 is raised (see Fig. 3*) thus separating the two halves of the die. This serves to relieve the pressure of the castings upon the walls of the cavities 14L due to the shrinkage of the gate 25 and further partially releases the castings from the die. It is of course necessary to use a form of clamp which will yield somewhat to permit this separation of the parts of the die. This mav be accomplished by providing the clamp 12 with an inwardly bent spring portion as shown in Fig. 6.
In Figs. 7 and 8 I have shown another form of die with diverging gates. In this form, the mold cavities 27. 27 are in the upper part 28 of the die. 29. 29 indicate the cores. The lower part of the die is indicated by 30. 31, 31 indicate air vents. In this form of die the diverging gates 32. 32 are cut into the conical surface 28 on the inner side of the die part 28. If desired, however. these gates may be cut in the lower part 30. The cylindrical bodies ca st in the cavities 27, 27 are indicated by 33. When the castings cool. the parts 28 and 30 of the die are separated as shown in Fig. 8. This is caused by shrinkage of the gates 32, 32. This separation of the parts of the die relieves the pressure between the castings and partially releases the castings from the die.
While I have shown and described certain embodiments of my invention it is to be understood that it is capable of many modifications. Changes, therefore in the construction and arrangement may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as disclosed in the appended claim, in which it is my intention to claim all novelty inherent in my invention as broadly as possible, in view of the prior art.
What I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A die including separable parts having a plurality of mold cavities for simultaneously casting a plurality of bodies, said die having a metal inlet and a gate leading therefrom to each mold cavity, said gates diverging at an angle from the metal inlet to the cavities and lying between parts of the die, one of the die parts having a slanting surface lying in the angle formed by the said diverging gates, whereby shrinkage of the gates will cause movement of said gates and pressure on said slanting surface to cause a separation of the die parts.
