This invention relates generally to devices for dispensing paper and especially to the wrapping of packages for delivery to a purchaser. y
The main object of this invention is to provide a paper dispensing apparatus particularly adapted for use with enclosed types of wrapping counters.v
rEhe second object of this invention is to combine a special form of paper dispensing mechanism with a wrapping counter having a restricted wrapping area.
The third object is to provide a special form of paper dispensing` apparatus in which paper in web form may be kept out of sight beneath the wrapping surface, and which can be mechanically fed eut through the wrapping surface to enable the operator to take hold of saine and manually draw it from the roll as far as desired before severing.
These, and other objects, will become more apparent from the specificationfollowing as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which: y
Figure 1 is a perspective view ofthe paper lispensing device showing the wrapping counter broken away in section. Figure 2 is a eide elevation of the paper dispensing mechanism showing the wrapping counter in section. Figure 3 is a horizontal section taken along the line 8-7-8 in Figure 2. Figure 4 is a iersnective view of one form of wra in@ l D counter showing the device associated there with. Figure 5 is a second form of wrapping counter showing `the relation of the paper dispensing device thereto. Y
.Similar numbers of reference refer to similar f rtsthrougheut the several views.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the device itself consists of a pair of upright standards 10 whose lower ends 11 are slightly offset toward each other and their adjacent faces are provided with pockets 12 to receive tl e spindle 13 ef the paper roll 14. The upper portion 15 of each standard 10 is outwardly turned and the two standards are united hy the cross angle members 16 whose adjacent edges 17 are upturned to form the tearing edges 18 between which the paper 19 passes as it comes through the wrapping coun- Vhers 16 are the iiller strips 21 between which the portions 22 converge, vas illustrated, to assistin threading the paperthrough the device.
Between the standards 10 and journaling therein is a roll on whose shaft 25 is se-V cured gear 26 by means of which motion may be imparted to the roll 24, and a contacting roll 7 through its gear 28 meshes with the gear 26. The spindle 29 ofthe roll 27 is supported by. the upper ends of the arms which are carried by the rock shaft 81 provided with a roll releasing lever 32'nori inally' urged upward by Ia spring. A depression of the lever 32 will, of course, move the rolls 24 and 27 apart to facilitate the threading of paper therethrough. s
On one of the standards 10 is secured the extension bracket 84 whose inturned end 85 serves as a guide for the plunger 86 which is provided withY a key '37. Y
On the shaft 25'is loosely mounted a rocker Varm 88 adjacent to the rear 26 and carrying a pawl 89 which is normally urged into engagementwith the gear 26 by means ofa' spring 40. Y 4' One end of the plunger 36 is connected to the rocker arm88 so that a pushing movement of the key 37 will cause kthe rolls 24 and 27 t-o rotate in a direction which will cause the paper 19 to moveupwardly betweenthe edges 18 far enough to permit the taking care of same with the hands and the subsecpuentdraw-` ing of suilicient paper from' the roll 14 for the purpose intended. f f It is Ydesirable toV provide a spring 41 Afor urging the plunger 'outwardly. This ythrough which the paper 19 can pass. It will `also he noted in- Figures e and 5 that the wrapping surface of the counter 20 is re-v stricted 1n area, due to the class ofv counters 2 Les' on which they are used, and it is this restriction which makes the use of this dispensing device especially advantageous. lt will be noted in Figure l that the restriction consists of a wall 42 provided with pigeon holes 43 and side wings le and the operator is confined between the two counters Q0 by the wall 45. and the vdoor 1li). .Vrapping counters of this type are usually provided with shelves 47.
In the type shown in Figure 5 the Wrapping counter 2O is surrounded by three walls 48 and the end walls 49, the counter being continuous but in U shape, within which the operator is confined by the door 50. A raised shelf 5l extends around tue walls i8 and further restricts the movements of the operator.
t Will be understood that Wrapping counters such as are shown in Figures Ll and V5 are now in use and that my .dispensing device is particularly valuable when used in connection therewith, owing to the natural limitations of such devices as far as wrapping surfaces are concerned.
I claim:
l. A paper dispensing device consisting of a longitudinal frame ha *ing a slot formed therein along the length thereof, a pair of standards at opposite ends of .said frame, means for mounting a roll of paper between said standards in a manner to permit the ends of said paper to pass through said slot, fixed feed roll around which said paper passes, a second feed roll yieldably mounted alongside of said fixed feed roll, gears on said rolls for rotatably connecting saine, a rocker arm on said fixed feed roll, a pawl on said rocker arm normally engaging the gear on said fixed feed roll, a plunger for operating said rocker arm in a manner to swing said pawl and to impart a limited movement to said feed roll in a driving direction, and a spring for returning said pawl to a point of rest.
2. A paper dispensing apparatus having in combination pair of spaced standards, a pair of upwardly feeding rolls mounted between said standards, intermcshing gears on said rolls for driving same in unison, a hinged arm mounted alongside of one of said gears, a plunger attached to said arm for rocking same, a pawl mounted on said arm having a spring thereon for urging same into engageu ment With the teeth of the gear, a movement of said pawl in one direction causing a movement of said gear, a shaft journaling between said standards having` an arm at each end thereof supporting the second roll, a spring for urging said second roll toward said lirst roll, and a lever on said shaft for minfin@` said second roll in opposition to said sprn p 3. A paper dispensing' device consisting of a pair of do.vntuined angle members having their adjacent ends spaced from each other their upper sides inclined upwardly Vand then
