" 1928. Serial Thesubject matter of this application has been divided out'of my pending application Serial No. 121,114, filed July 8,1926; Means forruse in making fire-proof floor'constructions. a 1
This invention relates to reinforced concrete floor systems. The invention particularly relates to systems of this character in which a special design of joistpcan be utilized for carrying the constructionlo'ads. The in vention is furtherv designed sothat the concrete can act as a T-beam and can take the compression stresses asit sets. Either metal or wood forms can be used and in the event is no swelling of the same occasioned whereby concrete iswasted because of the forms takingup concrete nor is there any warping of thewood forms. The claims of this application are limitedtothenew and improved fire-proof floor construction obtained by the use of the forms and construction materials shown in the; accompanying drawings and hereinafter fully described. I provide means whereby a temporary support which is utilized for carrying the. forms can be left inthe concrete so as to become part'of the metal reinforcement of the floor. These supports arecomprised of end and central spacing barsand suspension rods and in; termediate suspension yokes. The design obviates the necessity of shoring, saves considerable time in construction and enables the pouring of the concrete for the top floor first, if desirable.
The annexed drawings'and the following description set forth in detail certain means embodying my improvedfire-proof floor, construction, and the forms and construction materials utilized in forming said floor construction, such disclosed means, however, constituting but a-few of the various forms in which the principle of the invention may be embodied.
In said annexed drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a fragmentary portion of the supports and forms forforming my improved reinforced'floor construction, certain parts being broken away to disclose certain underlying parts, as will be hereinafter fully explained;
Serial no. 121,114. Divided and. this application filed February '7,
Figure 2 is a-transverse vertical section, taken in theplane indicated by the line HII, Figure 1; I p a Figure 3 is a fragmentary transverse vertical section, upon an enlarged scale, taken in.
the plane indicated by the line III-III, Figures 1 and 6; a Figure 4 is a fragmentary transverse verti cal section upon the same scale as that of Figure 3, taken in the planeindicated by the line TV-IV, Figures 1 and 6;
Figure 5 is a fragmentary longitudinal vertical section, upon the same scale as Figures 3 and 4', taken in the planes indicated by the line VV, Figurel and Figure 6 is a fragmentary plan view, upon the same scale as that of Figures 3, 1 and 5, of a part of the elements shown at the lefthand end of Figure 1,-the view being taken from the position indicated by the line- V IVI, Figure 2. 7 Referring to' the annexed drawings in whlch the same parts are indicated by the same respective ordinals in the several views,
a main floor'girder is indicated by the ordlnal 1 which is adapted to be supported by concrete or steel columns.
The girders 1 V serve as main spaced longitudinal supporting members. Upon these girders 1 areisupported a plurality of spaced transverse joists 2',the latter in the form of construction shown and described being a special type of bar joist described and claimed :by me in my United States Letters Patent No. 1,651,032, serving as longitudinal reenforcement bars, and being mounted upon these joists 2 are spacer bars Bformed along their lower edges with spaced recesses or notches e a-11d along their upper edges with spaced recesses or notches 5. The notches 1 furnish means for aligning the spacer bars 3 at the proper distances apart upon the joist 2, the upper chord 30 of the latter being received by the lower bar notches 4t. 5 The upper bar notches 5,:
which are disposed adj acent to and upon opposite sides of the joists 2, receive the upper bent ends of hook bolts 6 which support concrete forms hereinafter fully described. The
hook bolts 6 dependfrom the longitudinal bars 3 and serve as reinforcement members, as hereinafter fully described. Forms are provided for the joist 2 comprising pans or troughs 9 which surround the joist 2 and are formed with upper flanges 9 which receive the lower threaded ends of the hook bolts 6, nuts 8 providing means by means of which the joist form pans 9 are supported at the desired height by the bolts 6. The spaces between the flanges 9' of the adjacent joist pans 9 are filled by plates 10 which are formed with strengthening ribs 11.
Supported from the bottom of the joist forms 9 are girder forms 12 formed with upper flanges 15 which are secured to the joist )ans 9 by means of bolts 13 and nuts 14. The extreme outer edges of the flanges 15 of the girder forms 12 are formed with upwardlyturned lips 16, Figures 3 and 5, the purpose of which will be hereinafter fully described. In order to close the ends of the spaces between adjacent joist forms 9, and above the girder forms 12, I provide end caps 17 having upper and lower flanges 18 and 19, respectively, and side flanges 17. The side flanges 17 do not extend quite to the upper corners of the end caps 17 but the flanges are shortened and the corners are notched, as indicated by the ordinal 17 Figure 3, indicating the top of the side flange 17, and the ordinal 17 indicating the space between the top of this flange 17 and the adjacent end of the top flange 18, this space 17 being considerably enlarged to provide play and to allow for the nut 8 and the slant of the mold 9. The end caps 1'7 are fitted between adjacent joist forms 9 on the sides and between the covers 10 and the girder forms 12 on the top and bottom, respectively, and are lim ited in their inward movement by the stop lips 16 formed on the flanges 15 of the girder forms 12.
Three of the spacer bars 3 are ordinarily provided for each bay of the building, one at each end and one in the center, and other supports are formed for the joist forms 9 intermediate adjacent spacer bars Thesc other supports comprise spaced yokes 20 which are supported upon the upper chord 30 of the joist 2 and are secured to the flanges 9 of the joist forms 9 by means of nuts 21. These yokes 20 also serve as depending reinforcement members. The bottom chord of the supporting joist is indicated by the ordinal 31 and an end plate 32 of the joist is shown connected at one end, Figure 3, by means of a tie-plate 28 to a vertical member 25 which is formed with a bottom flange 26 secured to a flange 15 of the girder form 12, and with a top strengthening flange 27. It will be noted that the plate 25 extends in height somewhat above the plane of the top chord 30 of the joist 2, or slightly above the desired height of the concrete floor. The
purpose of the construction illustrated by the member 25 with flanges 2G and 27 is to illustrate the closing up of a portion of the construction where no floor is to be laid, as, for instance, an elevator well. The ends of the joist 2 are framed in the masonry wall 24, Figure 2, by means of corbelled recesses 23 for receiving concrete to elfect this framing, in combination with the extension of the hearing plate 29 of the joist 2.
From the description heretofore given, in combination with the accompanying drawings, it will be evident that after the elements have been assembled in the manner described, the concrete can be poured and that the same will flll the joist forms 9 and flow over the covers 10 to'form concrete joist and intermediate flooring and will also flow into the girder forms 12 and fill up the space between the end caps 17 to form concrete girders and complete the concrete floor, with the spaced transverse joist 2, the longitudinal spacer bars 3, the depending hook bolts 6, the depending yokes 20, and the spaced longitudinal girders 1 forming the metal reinforcement. Now, when it is desired to remove the forms, it is necessary only to take out the bolts 13, it being noticed from an inspection of Figure 3, for instance, that the nuts 14 are put upon the top ends of the bolts 13, and take down the forms 12, and then to remove the nuts 8 and 21, whereupon the joist forms 9 can be removed, the supporting features thereof'including the spacer bars 3, hook bolts 6, yoke supports 20 and nuts 14, being left in the concrete to form part of the metallic reinforcement.
What I claim is:
1. In fire-proof floor construction, the combination of longitudinal girders; spaced transverse joists supported'thereon; spaced longitudinal reinforcement bars mounted on said joists; spaced depending reinforcement members supported by said joist-s throughout the length of the latter; spaced reinforcement members depending from said longitudinal bars adjacent to and upon opposite sides of said joists, respectively; concrete beams enveloping said girders and joists; and concrete enveloping said reinforcement bars and reinforcement members and filling the spaces between the tops of said joists to form an unbroken floor body and surface.
2. In fire-proof floor construction, the combination of main spaced supporting members; spaced tension members mounted upon the latter and extending in a direction divergent thereto; spaced longitudinal reinforcement bars mounted on said tension members; spaced depending reinforcement members supported by said tension members throughout the length of the latter; spaced reinforcement members depending from said longi- STANLEY MAOOMBER.
