UNITED STATES HERBERT MEYER, OF NORTH FOND DU LAC, WISCONSIN STORM SASH VENTILATING DEVICE Application filed. February 20, 1930; Serial No. 429,993.
This invention relates to a storm sash ventilating device and particularly to the means whereby the same may be held in closed or adjusted position.
I It is aimed primarily to provide a novel construction of such fastening which will enable the same to be securely held at all times against rattling and which will guide the locking bar into locking position incidental l to closing of the ventilating sash. v
Additional objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with accompanying drawings illustrating an operative embodiment.

Referring specifically to the drawings, designates a storm sash which may be of conventional construction having a frame 11 and one or more glass panels as at 12. The frame also provides a space in which a ventilating sash 13 is normally disposed and which sash is movable to expose the opening for ventila tion purposes as shown in Figure 3. The
"" sash 13 comprises a wooden or other frame 14, and carries a glass or other panel at 15.
Said ventilating sash is hinged as at 16, on a horizontal axis to the frame 11. Across the hinges 16 a water-shedding guard plate 17 is disposed, the same being securely fastened as at 18 to the frame 11 above the hinges. This shield 17 may be of copper, brass or any material desired.
Fastened to the frame 11 at the interior thereof so as to cover the opening which is exposable by the ventilating'sash 13, is a sheet of wire gauze or screen material 19, which may be of anymaterial desired, for
instance fabric. copper or other metal.
F astened to the frame 14 at the inner side movement and positioning of the locking bar thereof is a bracket 20 to which is pivoted at 21, a locking bar 22 having notches 23 in its lower edges. Suitably fastened at one side of the frame 11 is a guide and latching bracket 24, screws 25 for instance being used to secure it in place. Such bracket has a vertical slot 26 and the adjacent portion of screen 19 is cut away at 27 in order to accommodate the e0 22. By means of notches 23, the bar is engageable with a lower blade vportion 28 of bracket 24 as shown in Figure 3.
When the auxiliary sash 13 is closed, the locking bar 22 is substantially vertical as shown in Figure 2 and it will be noted that the same is accommodated entirely without the vertically slidable upper sash 29 as gigounted in the conventional window frame In such locked or closed condition of Figures 2 and 4, the free end of the bar 22 engages a holder 31 which is generally of L- shape in order to provide arms 32 and 33, the I latter being screwed as at 34 to the frame 11 Go and the former having a hook 35 at its forward edge which is engaged by the bar22. The arm 33 is returned upon itself to provide a resilient guide arm 36.
The pivotal connection 21 will enable slight so lateral play of the bar 22 and when the same is moved to closed position, it will strike the arm 34 as shown in dotted lines in Figure 5, pressing the latter inwardly and guiding the same laterally against the arm 32, whereupon it is released and the resilient action of the depressed arm or bar 36 forces it forward behind the hook 35 so that it will be engaged and held securely as in Figure 5.

I claim as my invention one-piece article of the class described comprising an outwardly extending arm termin ating in a hook, an attaching arm extending at an angle from the first mentioned arm and on the same side as said hook, a resilient arm returned over the attaching arm, said resilient arm being engageable and depressible by movement of a fastening in one direction so that the latter may move ainst the first mentioned arm and be urged fiy the resilient arm in a, direction at an angle to the first direction into engagement with the hook.
