i The invention relates to apparatus for making plate glass by an intermittent casting or rolling operation and then carrying the glass continuously forward through a leer. preferably of the roller type. In such an operation, it is desirable to roll the sheet at arelatively high rate of speed and then carry such sheet through the leer at a much reduced rate, as otherwise an exceedingly long leer would be required. Thepresent invention has for its object the provision of an improved means for carrying out this operation including the step of matching the successive sheets so that they may be made to follow each other in the leer with as short a space therebetween as may be found desirable. One embodiment of the invention 1s shown in the accompanying drawings,

The sizing rolls 20 and 21 are hollow and water cooled in the usual way. The roll 21 isdriven by a chain 22 passing around a sprocket on the end of the roll and around loose sprockets on the shafts 23, 23, one of which may be locked to its shaft by the clutch 24. The shafts 23, 23. are driven from the shaft E through the spur gears 25, 25 and reduction gearing in the casings 26, 26. The roll 20 is driven from the roll 21 by means of the intermeshing spur gears 27.
The track for the car is in the form of a pair of racks 28, 28 which are engaged by the Wheels of the car which are in the form of spur gears 29. One pair of these gears is provided with a shaft carrying a sprocket over whose upperrside in driving engagement therewith passes the chain 30. This chain passes around sprockets loose on the shafts 23, 23, one of v which may be locked to its shaft by the clutch 31. This gearing arrangement provides for moving the car to the right. Provision is also made for moving the car to the left. This is accomplished through the shaft carrying the spur gears 29. A. second sprocket is provided upon this shaft over whose lower side in driving engagement therewith passes the chain This chain passes around sprockets loose on the shafts 23, 23, one of which may be locked to its shaft by the clutch 33. Beneath the rolls 20 and 21 is a hollow apron 34: suitably cooled and arranged to direct the sheet of glass formed between the rolls toward the end of the runway remote from the leer.

1. Apparatus for making'a. sheet of glass comprising a leer. having continuously operating forwarding means, a runway at the end'of the leer, means for driving said for.- warding means in the same direction and at the same speed as the leer forwarding means, or in a reverse direction at a higher rate of speed, a car mounted for movement back and-forth along the runway, means for moving the car, a pair of sizing rolls'carried by the car above the runway, an apron on the car below the rolls for receiving the sheet formedbetween such rolls, such apron being'directed toward'the end of the runway remote from the leer, and means for rotatingthe sizing rolls as the car is moved along the runway toward the leer at a rate of peripheral speed which is substantially equal to the rate of movement of the car less the rate of movement of the leer rolls.
