Description

K. MUTH Dec. 15, 1931.
CERTIFICATE OR COUPON SHEET FOR USE IN STATISTIC MACHINES Filed May 9, 1931 i E V Patented Dec. 15, 1931 UNITED STATES, PATENT OFFICE -KARL MU'IH, OF DUSSELDORF, GERMANY 7 CERTIFICATE on oouron snnnr non use IN srnrrsricivinonrnns Application filed May 9, 1931, Serial No. ssaaesyana in Germany SeptemberS, 1928.
. The present invention relates to an improved form of certificate or coupon sheets for use in connection with statistic machines suchas for instance Ho-llerith-machines.
The present system of checking or examining coupons orcertificates for the aproaching payment or redemption of interest dividends or othersimilar certificates results in great loss of time, and also requires alarge staff, and whilst the checking is being conducted mistakes can quite easily be made, and also falsifications or counterfeits are pos sible.
The usual method adopted for checking or examining such coupons or certificates isas tol1ows:When the interest coupons or cer tificates have been issued they are sorted, counted and the maturity date ascertained at the bank, and a similar process hasto be gone through by the company, corporation or the like taking over such coupons or certificates, whilst the coupons or certificates presented for redemption after being provided with numbers have to be counted, sorted and placed in numerical order and the maturity date has to be examined and checked. It must be remembered that every coupon or certificate passes through the handsat least seven times, and in many issues the number amounts to hundreds of thousands and in some instances even as much as a million. It will be clearly understood thereforethat'the method or practice hitherto employed not 7 only necessitates a considerable stafii but is also very uneconomlcal.
A system by which the'data of the interest coupons or certificates can be arranged in such a form that a mechanical estimation 1s posslble is already known. In th scase,
however, it is essential that the form and position at which the standard signs, punchings or perforations are made, correspond in all certificates or coupons. been proposed to produce a' number of coupons or certificates on one sheet and made de,
tachable from the sheet by perforating the sheetaround the edges of the coupons or certificates. V
The essential features'vof the present invention arethat the sheet proper, instead of be Further, it has corners. Interrupted slots are provided across each of the corners of each coupon or certificate, and thus blunting them. The coupons or certificates cohere to the sheet proper only by the interruptions of the slots at the blunted corners, so that when the coupons or certificates'are torn ofi' or removed from the sheet proper, they will'have perfectlyeven. and clean cut sides, the only. unevenness occurring at the blunted'corners which is, therefore of no importance. It is important, however, that all the four edges of each coupon should be evenand clean cut so that piles or bundles of coupons of certificates can be aligned or evened up ettectively.
As the blunted corners of the coupons or certificates do not affect the aligning or evening up of a pile or bundle of coupons or certificatesa notch or the like may bepunched or stamped out of one or more of the fiat corners to assist inaligning or evening up a I pile or bundle. I
The'blunted corners are particularly suitable forthis purpose because, as has already been mentioned, the evenness or smoothness of the blunted corners of each coupon or certificate is of little importance.
One particularembodiment of the present invention is illustrated in the accompanylng drawings wherein Figure 1 shows an interest certificate or coupon sheet with renewal coupons, and Figure 2 shows a single coupon or certificate on an enlarged'sca-le. In Figure 2 a single interest certificate is shown on asheet slotted or cut aroundits edges, andhaving columns of figures printed on thefleit hand side, and the text of the certificate printed on the right hand side; The arrangement of the printing on the coupon or certificate may of course vary, and for the purpose of diminution'may be imprinted on the back if desired. The sheet is preferably slotted or cut around the edges of the coupon or'certificate during the printing thereof. 7 i i The coupons or certificates are firmly held on the sheet proper by means of the interruptions between the slots or cuts at the blunted corners in spite of the long slots around the coupons or certificates. F or facilitating and 5 ensuring the correct aligning or evening up of a pile or bundle of coupons or certificates a notch or aperture a, preferably U shaped or.
semi-circular is provided at the blunted corners. This notch can be made at the same 10 time as the sheet is produced. The interruptions in the corner slots which serve to connect or hold the certificates or coupons to the sheet proper are shown at Z and the slots or cuts provided along the edges of the coupons or certificates are shown at The dotted lines on Figure 1 of the drawings mark the position at- Which the sheet can be folded.
It must be clearly understood that the printing of the coupons or certificates as Well garasthe forming of the slots or cuts and the notches or apertures can all be done in the same operation.
Itlnustbe clearly understood also that the invention is also applicable for forming coupons or certificates on stiff blocks instead of sheets'ol paper.
hat I claim and desire to secure by Let ters-Patent is 1. A sheet having detachable portions, and havingslits forming a part of the outer edge of each detachable portion the slits being shaped to form.uninterrupted straight sides andends and also interrupted diagonally cutoft. corners to the detachable portions.
2. A sheet having detachable portions of the same size, and having slits forming a part of the outer edge of each detachable portion, and positioning notches, the slits being shaped to form uninterrupted sides and ends .gozand also interrupted diagonally cut-ofi corners to the detachable portions, the positioning notch of each detachable portion being in the-same position in the edge of each detachable portion.
Asheet having detachable portions of the same size, and having slits forming a part of the outer edge of each detachable portion, and positioning notches, the slits being shaped to form iniinterrupted straight sides 591 and ends and also interrupted diagonally cut-olf corners to the detachable portions, the positioning notch of each detachable portion being inthe same position in the edge of one ofthe diagonally cut-oil corners of each de- 55. tachable portion.
In testimony whereof I ai'lix my simiature.
KARL MUTH.
