This invention relates to devices forre' moving ties from railway tracks. It has for its principal object toproduce a simpleuin expensive andlightweight tie remover'which can' be' quickly'ancl easily attached to the trackto force, the tie from beneath the rails thereof, Other objects are case of operation, reduced cost of manufacture and compactness of design. The invention coiisists inthe tie removerla-nd in the construction, combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed. In the accompany ing drawings, which form part of this specification and wherein like symbols refer to like parts wherever they occur,
F ig. 1 is a plan view showing a tie remover embodying my invention in operative posi tion on a section of railway track,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the tieremover and the tie engaged thereby, the adjacent rail being shown in vertical crosssection; and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the slidably mounted rail engaging members of the tie remover.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, my invention is shown in connection with a section of a railway track comprising parallel rails A connected by cross-ties B. The present tie removin device comprises a frame 0 having para lel side frame members 1 that are deepest at the outer end of said frame where they are permanently connected by a crosspiece 2 whose depth corresponds substantially to the depth of a railway tie. The side members of the frame C are connected at the inner end of said frame by a removable cross bar or pin 3 adapted to fit within alined holes provided therefor in upstanding bosses or ears 4 formed on said side frame members at the inner end ofsaid frame.
Slidably mounted on each of the side memhers 1 of the frame C is a rail engaging memher or block 5 provided at one of its upper corners with an outstanding lug 5a which extends longitudinallyof said side members towards the outer end of said frame. As shown in the drawings, each slide block 5 is provided with a horizontal hole 6 which exmin Rnnovmjz sermon, on sr. LOUIS, MISSOURI, Annonn-rnrn-n 'ro JOHN H, wn'AnE, onnirr rnn;
tends transversely therethrough' from side to i side thereof that is adapted to 'be brought into register with any one ofaseries ofhorizontalholes -7 that extendthrough the side member from side toside thereof and are spaced apart longitudinally thereof. 'VVheuf the hole-(tin a slide block 5 is 'bro'ughtinto reqisterwith anyone of the holes 7 in the sice member on which 'it'is mounted; said blockmay be locked to said side member by' 00 means of a lock pin 8. The remaining eIe-jJ ment of the tie remover comprises aitie'forcs ing or pushing member D" adaptedto be -interposed between the end member 'Qrfof the frame G and one endfoftheti'e-B.{Said 66 member preferably comprises an or dinaryi lifting ack having a longitudinally slidable' rack bar 9 mounted ina main" supporting frameorxhousing lO andactuat'ed'hya-pawl or rack segment 11 mounted in said*frame and operated by the usual hand leverf12'. 1 As shown in the'-drawings,the 'endfmember- 2"of the frame is provid'ednwith an o'peningfla through which the outer end of'the'. rack bar 9 may extend. I When} it is desired-to r move; one ofthe ties B from beneath the rails'A'ofthe railway track, the members that"securethe-rails oj said tie'are first removed 'and'the frame Gof :the tie remover then slidben'e'ath on -M8 3 said rails. with the sidelmembers 1*ofsaidframe positioned onoppos'ite'sides' of thea'd j ac'ent end portion of said tie; Theinn'er'Tends,- of the side members lofthe frame vC a'retlijje'n' connected together above the tie by 1mea ns' of the cross-pin 3 which restson thetop s'urface of said tie. Theslideblocks 5 are then I positioned on the's'ide 'members 1 of the frame with the holes 6 thereof in register withthe holes 7 nearest the-inner end of said frame," after which said'slide blocks arelocked to the side rails by engaging the lockLpins 8 with the registering holes 6 -and"7. The frame'is thenl pulled 'oi itwardly until the lugs "5'a-f0f' the: 7 :slide blocks 5'en'gagethe innersi'de edge of V the base flange ofth'eadj ac'ent rail A,andthe jack]? is then positioned i-n'thefra'Ifi G be-f: tween the end ofthetie; and the cross-memben- 2at theouterend offl'sajid frame, Withparts" thuspositiondflhejack is operated'by means v of the handle 12 to impart a step by step movement of the rack bar 9 relative to the cross-member 2 of the frame and in the direction of the tie and thus force the same crosswise of thetrack, When the rack bar has reached-the limit of its travel, the frame is then moved inwardly and slide-blocks adjusted thereon and locked thereto by engaging 1. 'A tie remover comprising a frame hav ing spacedside members connected at the endsof said frame by cross-members, --rai-l' engaging means mounted on said side ;1ne1n hers, and ,a pushing element separate from said friameand adapted to bear against the cross-member at one end of the frame for. 'exertmg an endwise pressureon the tie that is to be removed.
2. A tie removercomprising a. frame having spaced side: members connected at the ends ofcsaid'frame by cross-members, means permitting one of said cross-members tobe removed from said-frame, rail engaging memlast mentioned cross-member and said tie for exerting endwise pressure on the latter.
' 5. A device for removing tiesfrom railway tracks, said device comprising a frame having spaced side members connected at the ends of said frame by cross-members, means permitting one of sald-cross-members to be vremoved from sald frame, whereby sa d frame is adapted to be assembled beneath one of 'the'railsof the track with itsside-members disposed on oppositesides of the tiethatis to be removed, rail engagin-gmembers mounted on said side members and adapted to engage the inner edge of said rail, means permitting adjustment" of said" rail engaging members longitudinally of said side members, means for lOCklIlg said rall engag ng members to vsaid side members in the desired position of adjustment, and a pushing implement adapt ed to engage the other cross-member of said frame to operate against the acent end of saidtie. .7
