Description

Dec. 15, 1931. c. c. WAGNER ADJUSTABLE DRAWING BOARD Filed Feb. 26, 1931 INVENTOR Clarence E Eq11EF n .N R m T A I H Patented Dec. 15, 1931 SJDSTROIVL COMPANY; on rnrnnnnnnnrn;
YENN SYLVANIA-- Application filed February 1 26, 1931.
This invention relates to 2 adjustable draw ing boards-,and-has improved means formamtainin a drawing board at various inclinations;
A'further objectof the invention is to pro vide a drawing boardhaving a rack therebene'ath with *im rovedmeans for-engaging the board at rack for maintaining thedrawing acquired inclinations. I
Afu'rtherf object 'ofthe invention is to rovide a drawing with a base and with a rack extending be= neath the drawing board withmeans carried by the base for engaging the raclrand maintaining'the drawingiboard at attained inclinations; with further releasing'said engaging means at some predetermined'elev tion ofthe'drawingboard;
The invention,
corresponding-in general with'a table or other supporting structure having a drawingboard hingedly extendingdownwardly from board and tl'ir'o'ugh the'base', with a detent pivotally' and shdably connected with the base, adapted to'engagethe rack at any attained elevation, and with means of cooperation between the rack and the 'detent whereby the d etent is removed from' the engaging position at some predetermined elevation of the drawing board, to be maintained in such inoperative position until the drawing board has been returned substantially to its horizontal normality. V
The invention is directed to other objects and possesses other features of novelty and advantage, some of which, together with the foregoing, will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The drawing is a through the drawing structure, showing parts in elevation.
The drawing board 10, provided with the rail 11, is connected by means of a hinge 12 with any type of supporting structure 13. As shown in the drawing, this supporting vertical sectional view board and a supporting the rack and assoclated structure or base 13 corresponds substantially to a table top, in
which case the drawing board forms only a part of said table top,
for anobj'eot to provide boardhing'edly connected im roved means for' therefore, comprises a base connected therewith, with a rack the drawing PATENT Gems CIARENGE C. WAGNER, OF 'IPHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOB,TO J
Serial No. 518,305. 1
the-remaining part 'ofsaid table top being represented at 14, and when closed to horizontal position, the topof the drawing board 10*wi1l be substantially flush with the juxtar 7 posed sections ofthe table top 14:;
Beneath the drawing board 10 a keeper 15" is applied in any approved manner,-andto this" keeper 15 a rack 16 ispivoted, as at 17.
The rack 16 extends downwardly through: an opening provided in the'base 13," and 'a guide 18 is provided-for properly positioning this rack; The'guide '18 is preferably formed integral with the member'19 to-Which the detent 20 is connected.
The connection between the detent 20 and the supportingin-ernber 19 is both-pivotal and sliding, provision for such actionbeing pro vided by a slot and a pintle 22 through said slot *and engaging the supporting device 19.
The rack 16 is provided with a-plurality ofshoulders 23-and the detentwith a nose. 24 properly proportionec widely varied,
also provided with a shoulder27 and-a part 28 adjacent toisaid shoulder; i
The supporting device 19 is: also provided with a lug 29which extends outwardly across the normal plane of movementofthe de -Y tent 20; Y
In operation, the draw-ingiboard, starting at horizontal, maybe raised upon'its hinge 12 and such height as has been attained will bemaintained by'thenos'e 24 engaging some one ofthe shoulders 23 presented at that angle. When it is desired'to close the drawing'b'oard into planar unity with the table toprl i, itis lifted to its extreme upward lirnit, as indicated by the brolrenlin'e' 10", whichww-ill raise the hook 25 p to the brokenline position 25". r i j it will be seen l 23 may be in'-" the rack 16'is provided".
21-formed in the detent-QO,
I and positioned -to engage some of said shoulders 23am to" I 7 any angular position, one
cated by the dotted lines 10", but it is to be drawing boards of approximately its limit This action engages the detent back of the point 26 and the first movement is a pivotal movement, moving the detent so that the part 28 will engage against the lug 29.
A further lifting movement will slide the detent upwardly along this lug 29'and will place the shoulder 27 upon said lug 29 so that it will then occupy the broken line position 20.
The shoulder 27 resting upon the lug 29 Will maintain this detent in the position 20 which removes the nose 24 from position of engagement with any of the shoulders 23 and, therefore, the drawing board 10 is free to be returned to its horizontal position.
a As. the drawing board approaches approximately to its extreme horizontal position, it engages the nose 24 which is then at the position 24 and by such engagement releases the shoulder 27 from the lug 29, whereupon, by gravity, the detent will fall into engaging position.
The rack 16 is provided with a relatively plane section 16 against which the nose 24 will now engage, but no shoulders being presented throughout this minor section of the rack 16, no impedance will be offered to the complete return of the drawing board to horizontal.
It will thus'be seen that the drawing board may be lifted from its horizontal position to of which is indiunderstood that it may assume positions intermediate such dotted position 10 and the horizontal.
It will be maintained in any of such attained angular positions by the nose 24 in engagement with the shoulders 23. When the drawing board is to be returned to horizontal, that is to say, to form a continuation of the table top 14, it is merely lifted to the broken line position 10 which will place the detent out of engaging position, resting upon the lug 29, leaving the rack 16 free to slide to without engagement by the detent 20. The near approach to limit, however, will as explained release the detent and return it to active position.
here is shown in the drawing only a single one of the racks and its associated parts, which is sufficientfor a drawing board of small dimensions; It is obvious that for larger dimensions the racks may be duplicated.
Of course the adjustable drawing board herein disclosed may be modified and changed in various ways without departing from the invention herein set forth and hereafter claimed.
The invention is hereby claimed as follows:
1. A combination with a base, of a drawing board hingedly connected therewith, a rack carried by the drawing board extending downwardly relative to the base, a detent for said rack slidably and hingedly connected with a plurality of shoulders, a detent havmg a nose proportioned to engage the shoulders and being pivotally and slidably connected'with the base, and a hook carried at the lower end of the rack adapted to actuate the detentboth pivotally and slidably upon the movement of the rack to its upper limit.
A combination with a base, a drawing board hingedly connected therewith, a rack extending downwardly from the drawing board and provided with a plurality of spaced shoulders, a detent connectedwith the base hingedly and slidably, a lug carried by the base, a shoulder formed upon said detent, and a hook carried at the lower end of said rack adapted to lift said detent and place it upon said lug.
4. A combination with a base, a drawing board hingedly connected therewith, a rack extending downwardly relative to the drawing board and base and provided with a plurality of spaced shoulders, a detent hingedly and slidably connected with the base and provided with a nose proportioned and positioned to engage selectively the shoulders of the rack, a lug carried by the base, a shoulder provided upon the detent, a hooked extremity upon the lower end of said rack adapted to engage under the detent and move the detent first pivotally and then slidably to place the detent upon the lug and out of engagement with the rack, and means for removing the detent from the lug when the rack has approached the other limit of its movement.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
