Description
Nrrnp Sra'rns PATENT OFFICE.
AMOS PRATT, OF PERCIVAL, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WEATHER-STRIPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 183.1592, dated October 24, 1876; application led August 28, 1876.
To all whom t may concern I Be it known that I, AMOs PRATT, of Percival, in the county of Fremont and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Weather-Strip, of which the following is a specification:
The accompanying. drawing represents a door and door-sill with my improved weatherstrip attachment, shown partly in side elevation and partly .in section.
The object ot' my invention is to furnish a reliable and durable weather-strip for preventing the rain and moisture from entering under the outside doors in stormy weather, and the invention consists of a hinged carpet or weather strip let flush into the sill, and provided with a top plate that may be raised by afulcrumed lever t0 form contact with a mold' ing or" the door. The lever raises the strip by passing along a recess of the sill under the strip, the same being thrown out ot' contact with the strip by a slidepiece and knob.
1n the drawing, A represents a door-sill, and B an outside door, with a molding, C, near the lower edge. A weather or carpet strip, D, is fitted into a groove of the sill or threshold, so as to be flush with the same,
and hinged in suitable manner to the same.
A top plate, D', of the strip D is extended over the strip, so as to be engaged by a fulcrumed lever, E, that is lowered by a slide-piece, F, operated by a knob, F. The slide-piece and knob are guided in a recess and slot ot' the door, the slide-piece being pivoted to the longer end of the lever E, so as to'raise or lower the same as the slide-piece is pushed down or drawn up. The other projecting end ofthe lever E is thrown below the lower edge ot' the door when the weather-strip is desired to be used, and passed along a recess, a, of the door-sill, under the projecting top plate D, so as to raise the same simultaneously with the closing of the door. The weatherstrip is thereby thrown up into inclined position, and retained in contact with the under side ot' the molding C and the recessed lower parts ot the side beads or strips of the door. The water is thereby prevented from entering to the hall or room, and the weather-strip in this manner brought into use only in case of stormy weather, the lever being thrown upward into a recess of molding C, so as not to engage the strip when the same is not required.
'.lhe weather-strip remains in the sill, and is protected against wear by the top plate.
ln case of stormy weather the slide-piece is pushed up, the door closed, and the strip raised, forming thus a weather-guard of simple, neat, and durable construction.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of hinged extension-strip D D', lever E, and slide-piece F, all arranged with respect to door and sill, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
AMOS PRATT.
