y CONTAINER Filed April 28, 1950 Patented Dec. 8, 1931 UNITED STATES wrLLIAM s. LINDSEY, or GnnNsrDnrENNsYLvANIA CONTAINER Application mea Aprn 2s,
rlhis invention relates to a container for water colors or similar paints in which the various colors are contained` within individiual cups, .which are frictionally supported iny a holder. The holder is usually formed integral with or irremovably secured in the paint box so as to provide a space or compartment for brushes and the like within said container.
The object of the present invention is to form the cup holder as a separate unit, which will be securelyheld within the container but readily removed therefrom yfor the purpose of cleaning, the removal of empty paint cups, and the insertion of newcups in the holder.`
Referring to the drawings: Fig. 1 illustrates an ordinary paint box having a hinged top; v Fig. 2 illustrates the cup-holder as being removed from the container, illustratingay series of paint cups supported therein; and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional elevation of the container with the cup-holder inserted therein. s
The container in the present instance comprises a flat bottom 1, a front wall 2, a rear. Wall 3 and end walls il, 4, extending perpendicular to the bottoml. Hinged at 5 to the rear wall 3 is a cover 10 comprising a top plate 11, a front flange 12, a'rear flange 13, and end flanges 14, 14, extending perpen` dieular to the top plate 11 and adaptedto overlap the corresponding walls of the container 1. The cover 10 is provided with the usual depressions 15, 15 formed 'at thetop plate 11 to provide the usual dishes for holding water or mixing colors, etc., as desired.
The removable cup-holder 20 in the present instance comprises a topV plate 21 having a suitable number of openings for the reception of Jthe paint cups 22, 22, each opening being provided with a depressed flange v23 which is of a more or less resilient nature adapted to frictionally engage the side wall 1930. Serial No. 447,961.
24 of the .cup to hold 4the same withinthe opening 22 in the plate 21?, each cup having an annular flange 25 which is of greater diameter thanfthe opening 22 in the holder and which prevents the ,cup from beingv forced entirely through thesaid plate 21'.y f l Theplate 21 is provided with az depending flange orweb 26 extending the 'full length of the said plate along the front edge thereof. Along its rear edge the `plate :21; is provided 55 with a depending flange 27aof Asubstantially y the same `depth as the front flange or Webf26. The plate 21 isalso provided with end flanges 28 of substantially the same depth as the front and rear flanges 26 and 27.' Extending lat-t 60 erally from the lower edge of the front'flange or web 26 iny a plane substantially 4parallel c to' the top plate 21 of the holder is a bottom Y Matese. a 'f The 'cup in thecontaii'ierl` in the manner illustrated in Fig. 8, the front edge 31 `ofthe1bott m plate 30 of the holder being first placed in* the angle a; formed by and at'. the intersection of the bottom 1 and-front wallr2 ofthe con- 70 tainer. I n y e The holder is made of more or lessresilient material and in order to positionxthe holder 1 within the container pressure is applied toy the-rearedge 32 of thetop plate 21 of the 75 holder in order to bring the lower-'edge of: the rear flange 27 inside the rear wall 3 ofthe container, while, the front edgefl of the lower plate 30 is resting inthe angle as above noted. Such lapplication of-pressure causes a slight flexing of the web 26 which connects the front edge of the top plate 21- with the rear edge of the bottom plate 30' y of the holder, at the points y and z. The said connecting web 26 is thereby flexed from a 85 plane substantiallyA perpendicular ofv the planes of the substantially parallel plates' 21 and 30 respectively into a plane at a slight anglewithrespectto said parallel plates. The y saidholder Vmay then be pressed'downwardly. 90 y holder 20is adaptedto beplace'dl 675 A into the container, from the initial position shown in broken lines in Fig. 3 to the final position shown in full lines in said ligure, the said holder snapping into place with the bottom plate thereof lying substantially on the bottom plate l of the container. The inherent tendency of the connecting web 26 to resume its normal plane substantially perpendicular to the plates 21 and 30 causes the plates 2l and 30 to be moved in opposite directions, thereby causing the front edge 31 of the bot-tomk plate 30 to be forced into firm gripping engagement with the front wall 2 of the container, and the rear edge 32 of the upper plateV 21 and the rear ange 27 Yof the said top plate to grip lirmly and frictionally engage the rear wall 3 of the container, thereby firmly but removably maintaining the holder 20 within the container l. Y
The rear flange 27 and the end flanges 28 of the container do lnot extend entirely up tothe corners at the rear edge of the holder, thus providing a space 33 at each of the rear corners of the holder, under the top plate 21, intofwhich a knife blade orother thin implement may be inserted, after being passed between the edge of the top plate 2l andthe adjacent wall ofthe container, to pry the rearV edge of the'lsaid holder outof the container, whereby the holder may be readily removed therefrom. 1
as Shown in Fig. e when the homer s assembled within the containerjthe compartment is provided in the container for the reception of brushes, etc;
