Description
NITED STATES BENJAMIN I. WILLIAMS, OF LANSING, MICHIGAN.
- IMPROVEMENT IN WASHlNG-MCHINES.
Specification forming art of Letters Patent N0. 183,524, dated O0t0ber 24, 1876; application file d February 21, 1876.
T0 all whom zt mag; concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN I. WILLIAMS, 0f Lausiug, in the couny 0f Ingham and Staate 0f Michigan, have inveuted a new and useful Improvemeuo in Washing-Maohines, which improvement is fully set forth' in the following specifieation, ret'erence being had 130 the accompauying drawiugs.
The object 0f In invention is t0 rapidly wash and cleause elothing 0r other textile fabrics with little wear and tear.
Figure l is a side vie'w. Fig. 2 is an end view. Fig. 3 is a detached part. Fig. 4 is a bottom view 0f beater B. Fig. 5 is a'vertical seetional view. Fig. 6 is an en(l view of Fig. 3. Fig. 7 is an inside view 0f that: part 0f the gate marked T, showiug the box y f0r the shaft I t0 run iu,and the spring E above the the box 1, which is for the purpose of allowing the shaft I t0 give 01 raise With any undue pressu1e under the beaters.
In Fig. l, U is the b0x 0r tub, with its faueet N f0r drawing out the water. M T T, Fig. 3, is the gate, which is so construeted that bydrawing 0ut the pins J J and pulling the cord O, all 0f that patt 0f the machine shown in Fig. 3 will be drawn up 0ut 0f the box U and out of the way, sliding in grooves Inade in th e standards an each end 0t the ma- 0hine. When so drawn up the cord 0 may be fastened on pin R; then, by pulling c0rd O, whieh is fastened t0 one edge of cover H, and passing up over pulleys, the gate will be swung'to one side, the cord being fastened 130 pin R. L is the crank, by which the machine is worked in washing. J J are pins for fastening the gate and beacers down and in place when working, by passing through holes in the lower part of gate M T T. Figs. 3 and 6 show the vibrating moti0n of the beaters B and lever-power 0f pitmen A passing th=rough the slots in cover H, which act as fulcrums f0r said lever-power, the object 0f whieh VI- bratiug motion and lever-power is to eause tue elobhes to move from one side 0f the b0x U to the other, and turn aS they move, thereby exposing more surfa0e to the direct action 0f the beaters B.
Fig. 4 shows the bottom face of the beater, with its air-chamber F, annular gr0oves D D, and ehutes 01 air-passages O 0 O fr0m the chamber F 0ut; between the annular grooves D D. The beaters, striking the water ab an angle, forces the water into ehamber F and ch utes O 0 O, which are 011 the lower side, thereby forcing the air out from chamber F through chutes O O O, which are 0n tzhe upper side, causes great; c'ornmotion 0f the wa ter, thereby cleansin g theclothes more quickly.
I claim as my invention In a washing-machine, the 001'd and pulleys, with the sliding gate M T T, in combination with the crank I, pitmen A, Cover H, and beaters B having the chambers F and akutes O, as and f0r the purpose specified.
BENJAMIN I. WILLIAMS.
Witnesses SEYMOUR FOSTER, EUGENE B. W001).
