Description
because of cost.
' important in the case of automoblle timing Patented Dec. 1, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CLARENCE W. MANSUR, OF MALDEN, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO GENERAL ELEC- TRIO COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK NONMETALLIC GEAR WHEEL AND THE LIKE Application fi1ed May 21,
5 adhesive binder such as a phenolic Condensation product. In such a device it is desirable that the Webs be made as thin as possible consistent With the desired strength both because of lightness of the completed structure and These factors are especially gears, for example, Which is one extensive application for gear Wheels of this type.
The object of my invention 1s to provide an improved Web structure for a non-metallic gear'wheel or the like, Whereby the Web may be made thinner than heretofore, thereby reducing the cost of manufacture because of the saving of material, and still have ample 'm strength in the Web itself in both the circumferential direction and in a direction at a right angle to the plane of the Web.
For a consideration of What I believe to be novel and my invention, attention is directed to the following specification and the claims appended thereto.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a gear Wheel blank embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a radial sectional view 0 of the construction shown in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates the rim of a gear Wheel blank, 2 indicates the Web, and 3 indicates the hub, the hub being shown as being provided With a central opening 4 to receiveia metal bushing. In the present instance the blank is shown as being formed from Woven textile material united by a suitable adhesive. It is to be understood, however, that the construction shown is to be taken as typical of any suitable non-metallic gear Wheel construction, and that it may be constructed from either vvoven or unwoven material or partly from one and partly from the other.
In connection With such gear Wheel structures, I have discovered that the strength of the Web may be materiallv increased by constructing the Web With radially extending offset portions as is indicated at 5, which extend throughout substantially the radial depth of 1930. Serial No. 454,462.
the Web. Preferably the offset portions extend outwardly to each side of the normal plane of the Web, successive offset portions being oppositely arranged. Also, the offset portions are made of small axial depth compared to the thickness of the Web; of considerable circumferential Width compared to the diameter of the Web, and With their edges 6 extending radially. By small axial depth I mean a depth of the order of one-half the thickness of the Web. There is thus provided relatively thin, Wide, radially extending offset portions. This I regard as being an important feature of the structure because With this arrangement I add substantially to the stiffness and strength of the Web Without reducing its ability to Withstand stresses in a circumferential direction and Without introducing any difliculties as regards the molding of the structure.
lVhat I claim as new and desirc to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is l. A non-metallic gear Wheel blank or the like having a Web provided With radially extending offset portions extending throughout substantially the radial depth of the Web.
2. A non-metallic gear Wheel blank or the like having a Web provided With radially extending offset portions of small axial depth extending throughout substantially the radial depth of the Web.
3. A non-metallic gear Wheel blank or the like having a Web provided With radially extending offset portions of small axial depth and considerable r-,ircumferential Width extending throughout substantially the radial depth of the Web.
In witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this th day of May, 1930.
CLARENCE IV. MANSUR.
